The writing requirement must be completed before a graduate student advances to candidacy. A student may satisfy the GWARGL in one of two ways: an acceptable standardized test score, such as the Analytical Writing subtest of the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) or the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) completion of a literature review that receive(s) a passing score (10 points) on a 4-point rubric. Selection of Thesis or ProjectThesis: Candidates interested in research, learning to conduct research on their own instruction or their students’ learning, trying to test a solution to an identified problem, and/or interest in pursuing doctoral studies should consider a thesis. Candidates who chose a thesis must complete the Institutional Review Board (IRB) application the semester prior to enrollment in EDUC 698.Project: Candidates interested in providing leadership beyond the classroom level, e.g. professional development, resources manuals, curriculum development, should consider a project. The chair of the project committee may be a tenure line faculty member or may be a lecturer (with approval), who ensures the culminating project conforms to program and university standards.
