*** Students will be taking the Reading PMA on Tuesday, November 3rd ***

Math:

- We will start Chapter 6 Understanding Division, Monday, November 2nd. Our Mid-Chapter Checkpoint will be on Monday, November 9th, and our Unit Assessment will be on Monday, November 16th. We will be assigning the online Chapter 6 Online Review homework assignment on Friday, November 13th. Please remember that the assignment will be open for two nights and once you “turn it in” you will no longer be able to access the assignment. Our recommendation is to “save and close” the first night in order to review the material again over the weekend, but don’t forget to “turn it in” ( Your child is also responsible for showing work for the online homework, please have him/her turn in the work on the day of the assessment. Remember, the online review HW is a replica of the test. This will help make sure the questions are not a total shock on the day of the test.

- In Math we will use a journal each day. Please help your child remember that this journal must be brought to school every day. These journals serve as excellent review materials and we encourage you to look at them each night to review what we did in class and to study the vocabulary words.

3rd Grade Math homework: Our expectation is that homework should be completed nightly except on the days we complete our Chapter tests, then there will be no homework. We are asking that your child complete the entire backside of the homework assignment, as the spiral review will reinforce all concepts taught throughout the year. We also expect them to complete the assigned problems on the front of each homework assignment, which will be stated in the homework chart (see above) at the beginning of each week.

Chapter 6 Vocabulary:

Divide – to separate into equal groups

Dividend – the number that is to be divided in a division problem

Divisor – the number that divides the dividend

Quotient – the answer to a division problem, not including the remainder

Inverse Operations – opposite operations or operations that undo each other, such as addition and subtraction or multiplication and division

Related Facts – a set of related multiplication and division equations

- If your child is struggling with any of the concepts please contact Ms. Thresher or Miss Comendeiro.

- On our 3rd grade website under the Math section, you will find different resources to help reinforce the skills we are working on. Under the Math section you will also be able to find a list of the Think Central Go Math Interventions that align with the chapter we are working on in our classroom.  Intervention videos will "show" how things are being taught and will give you better insight into how to "help" your child at home.

- If your child is absent when a math lesson is taught, he/she can go onto ThinkCentral to view the "Intervention" lesson for that particular skill. This will "teach" what was missed at school and hopefully help to prepare them for when they return.

- The log-in and password for Think Central has been placed on the inside cover of your child's planner.  Please utilize Go Math to help your child practice math concepts at home.  It can be accessed at  .  We will be assigning each student all of the interventions as we go through each chapter.  Please encourage your child to review previously taught materials through these intervention pieces.

World Lab

This week we will begin our next unit of study in Social Studies: The U.S. Constitution. We will be focusing on how government was established through a written Constitution. Students will work together as we explore the preamble and the amendments that make our Constitution so important. In class we will be reading our Studies Weekly newspaper. This newspaper must be brought to class every day. Please continue to review the World Lab journal to facilitate discussions at home about what we are learning in class. The newspaper should also be read as a great review. The test for this unit will be on Friday, November 6th

Students have received their log in information for the Studies Weekly website. The log in information is on a label inside the cover of the student planners. The Studies Weekly website is an excellent resource for reading the newspapers. The website also has review games that the students can play to help them review the material taught in class.

Please continue to review the World Lab journal to facilitate discussions at home about what we are learning in class. The newspaper can also still be read as a great review.

Language Arts:

This week we will be completing a graded informational writing. We will also be working on our spelling and handwriting.

Quarterly Writing Prompt #2 will be on Thursday, Novemeber 5th.

Please be sure to monitor your child’s written sentences at home, ensuring that conventions are being utilized (capital letter to start, punctuation at the end). We notice this is an issue for third graders this year.

Homework for the week:

Please make sure to read 30 minutes each night, and complete fluency the last minute.

Fluency Practice:

Fluency: There are two of the same passage for the nightly fluency check. One is for you to follow as your child reads. Use the table at the bottom to record scores once each night. Your child should only be reading this passage for one minute.

Reminders:

o School starts at 8:45, but students are allowed in the classroom starting at 8:15.

o Please remember to sign the planner each night.

o Please note in the planner if there is a change in dismissal.
