XXXXX, an analyst in your XXXX office suggested to me that despite not studying a finance related degree, I should apply. He advocated Goldman Sachs emphasis on the individual and that there is no perfect mould for an employee, but rather everyone has different beneficial skills.

Goldman Sachs is the place to satisfy my interest in finance. Over summer I worked at a boutique brokerage firm, XXXXX, researching internet service companies, notably Tencent. I found analysing companies in this sector to be the most stimulating, as they produced no tangible product, but lines of code. Analytically they are unique, trading with high P/Es and high growth. Goldman Sachs track record within this sector, such as Facebook, and recently acquiring the lead position with Twitter’s IPO, leads me to apply to the investment banking department. Whilst at XXXXX I had an introduction to reading balance sheets and formatting roadshow schedules for a XXXX IPO. I learnt how to analyse balance sheets and the different variables between industries, for example why garment manufacturers have large account receivables.

My study of History has strengthened my analytical skills and focus on detail. I found this to be useful when valuing companies. My aptitude for hardwork and time management is demonstrated by my employment at a supermarket while studying for my A-Levels. It was there that I discovered the pleasure in customer interaction. A front office role offers the opportunity to combine customer interaction with my analytical skills. Participation in team sports, such as college football, has formed me into a team player. At the same time, I am comfortable working independently and adapt to different roles quickly.
