PETTY TAKES 18-HOLE, DIV. I LEAD IN THE

PGA MINORITY COLLEGIATE GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. – James Petty of Florida A&M University fired a bogey-free 68 to grab the lead after the first 18-holes in the Division I men’s individual standings at the 21st PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship. The wind picked up substantially in the afternoon along with rain showers at The PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla., which increased the difficulty on the course.

“I started a bit slow, but I birdied the last three holes on the front nine to start 3-under-par,” said Petty, a sophomore from Grand Blanc, Mich. “I only had one birdie on the back nine, on Hole No. 12, but I was very excited not to record a single birdie.”

The University of Texas Pan-American in Edinburg, took the overall lead in the Division I men’s team standings with a 2-under par 286, and hold a 2-shot lead over Florida A&M University of Tallahassee, with a 288.

In Division II, Fayetteville State University in N.C., lead Morehouse College of Atlanta, Ga., by 16-strokes after firing a first round 3-under-par 285.

Derek Scott, a sophomore from Hope Mills, N.C., led the Broncos through 18-holes after shooting a 3-under-par 68.

In the NAIA Division, Johnson & Wales University of Miami, Fla., sit atop the leader board with a tournament low 5-under-par 283. Edward Waters College of Jacksonville, Fla., trail the Wildcats by 19-strokes.

Shawn Scott led the Wildcats after firing a four-under-par 68. “I got hot in the middle of the round, birding four out of five holes,” said Scott, a junior from Melrose, Mass. “Since this is my first time in the Championship, it helps knowing that our team has been very successful in the past here at The PGA Golf Club.”

In the women’s division, Bethune-Cookman College, winner of the 2006 Championship, carded a first-round team total of 24-over-par 316, to grab the lead over the University of Texas-Pan-American by 12-strokes.

Fern Grimshaw of Bethune-Cookman College recorded the low-round for the women with a 4-over par 76. “I need to sink a few more putts tomorrow then I did today, but if I can shoot in the mid 70’s again, I should be in good position for the weekend,” said Grimshaw, a sophomore from Dorset, England.

Georgette Rollo, a senior from Texas Southern, holds a 2-shot lead over Maria Urquiola of Bethune-Cookman College in the independent women’s division after carding an 11-over-par 83.

In the Independent men’s division, Steven Frazier, representing the University of Houston and Vincent Johnson from Oregon State University, share the 18-hole lead at 2-under par 70.

“It was a roller-coaster round,” said Frazier, a junior from Houston, Texas. “Despite hitting every green in regulation, my putter was really cold on the front nine and I missed a lot of short putts. I got hot on the back nine and the highlight of my round came at hole No. 17 when I made a 35-foot putt for my fifth birdie on the back nine.”

Over 170 contestants from 36 colleges and universities, representing 13 countries comprise the field for the 2007 PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship. State Farm Insurance and The Golf Channel have combined to produce a one-hour Championship highlight programs, which will air on June 6 at 3:00 P.M. EDT and on June 23 at 4:00 P.M. EDT.

The major renovations to both the Ryder and Wanamaker Courses were designed by Tom Fazio. The updates to the courses include a conversion of all putting surfaces, the restoration of bunkers, the addition of landscape around the course and drainage improvements. Both courses have received major accolades over the last few years. The Ryder Course was rated the past two years as one of the “Top 50 Courses for Women” by Golf for Women magazine. The Wanamaker Course has been listed in Golf Digest’s “Best New Affordable Courses in America” and in Golf Magazine’s “The Top 10 Courses You Can Play in Florida.

“The PGA of America is proud to host the 21st Minority Collegiate Golf Championship,” said PGA of America President Brian Whitcomb. “The PGA Golf Club is a wonderful venue and we are so pleased to have the student athletes competing here for a 10th consecutive year.”
