The 13th PGA Teaching and Coaching Summit

An Overview

Since 1988, premier instructors have gathered in an effort to increase their knowledge of the golf swing, learn more about key technology outside the lesson tee, and share best practices with their colleagues. The 13th PGA Teaching & Coaching Summit is another important chapter in a PGA Professional tradition highlighting the core values of educating others and sharing knowledge. The Summit theme of “Where Communication Meets Excellence” serves as a point of unification for all instructors regardless of methods and areas of expertise. The commitment of many is to ensure an experience that you will take home and use at your facility. That is our goal and we hope the Summit exceeds your expectations.

We have assembled a celebrated cast, as well as some individuals rising in The PGA of America, who offer some “out of the box” subjects that will get your mind working on how you may adapt these into your teaching and presenting philosophies.

Our thanks to our presenting sponsor, GOLF Magazine, and to supporting sponsors GolfTEC and Hospital for Special Surgery, who stepped forward to support this Summit. Without our sponsors, this venue and curriculum would not have been possible.

The PGA Summit Committee has worked to meet your needs that include better timing, positioned on the cusp of the PGA Merchandise Show and concise presentations to motivate beyond the event. We are pleased to welcome back GOLF Magazine’s induction ceremony for its “Top 100 Teachers in America.”

Day 1 opens with 2012 PGA Teacher of the Year Michael Breed, veteran host of Golf Channel’s “The Golf Fix,” returning as our master of ceremonies. Breed’s unbridled enthusiasm will help us navigate through an extensive schedule. Starting off with PGA of America President TED BISHOP updates the evolution of “Get Golf Ready;” followed by the triumvirate of Stockton Golf – former U.S. Ryder Cup Captain DAVE STOCKTON and sons Dave Jr. and Ron, you will discover “Secrets to the Short Game.” MIKE MALASKA, the 2011 PGA Teacher of the Year, will explore individual “athletic personality.”

Just when you think that you have heard everything about struggling to find a foothold in a PGA Professional career, you will meet Northern California’s WILL ROBINS. Hall of Fame football coach BOBBY BOWDEN is on deck in the afternoon to give us a rare, personal perspective about his career.

Back to the golf course, JOHN NOVOSEL will give a glimpse of swing secrets shared by the game’s great players. Researcher TIM KREMER will share “peak performance” expertise; former U.S. Navy Seal, DR. JOE LACAZE will provide a study of how changing structure and moving patterns are related; and CHERYL ANDERSON, ED IBARGUEN, and CHRIS THOMSON will provide a lively panel discussion on “How to Grow Your Teaching Business.”

A tribute to PGA teaching legend Jim Flick rounds out Day 1; followed by the induction of 18 individuals into the GOLF Magazine’s “Top 100 Teachers in America.” Don’t miss the GOLF Magazine-sponsored reception (on the Fourth Floor – Valencia Foyer) from 6:25 to 7:45 p.m.

DAY 2 commences with Dr. STEPHEN NORRIS, consultant to Canadian Olympic Teams, leading the morning presentations. He is followed by Master of Ceremonies MICHAEL BREED, with his energetic “in-depth look” at trying to master perhaps the toughest element of golf – putting. Then, an all-star panel of past PGA Teachers of the Year – RANDY SMITH, TODD ANDERSON, MIKE BENDER, and CHUCK COOK discuss their respective methods to coaching talented players to reach full potential.

ANDY HILTZ of supporting sponsor GolfTEC will precede lunch with a study of how a teacher becomes a coach. We will keep in tune with the coaching theme with DR. PAUL SCHEMPP exploring the value of great coaches to your own careers and the twosome of Dr. BOB CHRISTINA and ERIC ALPENFELS combine a fascinating hour into “How Swing Cues Influence Swing Changes,” and what research tells us about the value of teaching with video.

The Summit closes with three back-to-back headliners, LPGA Player of the Year STACY LEWIS and her coach, JOE HALLETT; 1994 PGA Teacher of the Year JIM MCLEAN and European Ryder Cup star IAN POULTER.

Our thanks to the members of the PGA Summit Committee. Their persistence to dial into a central theme for this educational forum has resulted in a great sharing of ideas. The future appears bright as we all strive to be the best at what we do.

Enjoy your two days with us, and the best of luck for a successful 2013. May you have a safe journey home.
