The Man with the ViolinUnit PlanBy: Kathy StinsonGrade 2Common Core Standards: 1.RL.2, 2.RL.3, 2.RL.6, 2.RL.7TumbleBooks used to help launch topic:The Man with the Violin The Best Mariachi in the WorldThe First MusicSong of Middle CMany appreciate music in a variety of ways. Music can inspire a feeling or movement. In life sometimes we can be too busy to notice beautiful things around us. By sharing information through this unit plan, kids have the opportunity to notice, express and imagine themselves through music. Children can learn that they must practice and work hard to learn to play music or sing. Objective: Have children discuss how music can make you feel and how practicing music can make you better and more confident. Have children identify with feelings and emotions that music can bring by making a text to text and a text to self connection. Compare and contrast the characters in stories. The Lessons: 1. Start by posting a chart up on paper, chalkboard or the smartboard and have each student fill in their name, what music they enjoy listening to or singing or playing. Have the teacher go first and students and volunteer. Example:NameWhat music I like: play, listen, singHow it makes me feel? How does it bring people together?Ms. SilverlistenMoved and full of emotion when it is inspiring or upbeat. You could even make a 4th column entitled: What lessons can/does music teach? You may adapt the chart to include other themes you may want to explore regarding music.2. Choose one of the books from the TumbleBookLibrary collection and share it with the class. Discuss how music impacts the characters from the story. (How does it make them feel, how does it bring them joy, how does the music bring people together). 3. Add the book to the chart that was started and fill in what applies from the story read. ?4. Choose another book from the TumbleBookLibrary and compare and contrast the characters from the books.Make a Venn diagram to display this. Two good books would be:The Man with the Violin The Best Mariachi in the WorldExample:Boy BothGustavoListens to musicLearns to singLoved MusicBoth noticed things4. This can be repeated for an additional story and added to the chart. 5. Finally you can have the children create their own Venn diagram with a partner identifying if they like to play, sing, or listen to different types of music, what they liked that was similar or different from their partner. ................
