WELCOME TO THE CHICAGO HIGH SCHOOL FOR …

WELCOME TO THE CHICAGO HIGH SCHOOL FOR AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES!!!

Your physical education class will offer you a variety of supervised activities designed to develop and improve your individual fitness, poise, strength, and endurance. In addition, you will be able to increase your knowledge of sports and its rules. By participating in individual and team sports, you will be provided an opportunity to expand your ability to interact with others, as well as practice good sportsmanship.

Even though the school year is 38 weeks in length, your physical education class will be divided into segments, or blocks. Each of these segments will emphasize a particular sport, physical activity, health or driver education component.

Each segment will include different activities. You will be introduced to the sport or activity, participate in skill development with game play, engage in tournament play, and gain sufficient knowledge of the rules and regulations governing the activity for testing or assessing your progress.

Through your participation in all of the sports and activities, you will be successful. Your grade in physical education will be determined by:

1. Attendance and punctuality (Points will be deducted for tardiness)

2. Preparation for class (required P.E. uniform and classroom materials appropriate to Health or Driver Education classes).

3. Active participation in class

4. Passing skill and/or written exams

5. Demonstrate a positive mental attitude with focus on teamwork and sportsmanship

ALWAYS DEMONSTRATE RESPECT FOR OUR RULES, GUIDELINES AND ALL MEMBERS OF OUR CLASS – AT ALL TIMES!!!

Your Physical Education Uniform

1. CHSAS gym uniform (T-shirt and shorts at a cost of $25.00 ($2.00 extra for Sizes 2XL and up)) Correct name should be printed on gym uniform (no art/graffiti or nicknames)

2. Solid white or black socks only (ankle length or higher)

3. Comfortable gym shoes

Gym Uniform Rental/Replacement Policy

All students must wear the approved P.E. uniform. The CHSAS Physical Education Department provides clean rentals at 50 cents per item. It is our aim to maintain uniformity in class and to have all students participate in the daily activities, so the physical education teachers wash the rental uniforms on a rotating basis to keep our class on a successful track. Renting is a privilege and should not be abused by our students. If the original uniform is lost or stolen, a note from home must be brought in by the student to verify the parent is aware of the loss, and when it will be replaced. Until that time, a uniform must be rented. Sweatsuits may be worn when the class is going outdoors ONLY if the weather warrants and with the instructor’s permission. At that time, the sweatsuit is to be worn over the CHSAS gym uniform. All students are expected to dress properly each and everyday, unless their instructor issues different instructions. Due to unforeseen circumstances, there may be occasions when rental services are not available.

All students will be given 5 minutes to dress for class, as well as 5 minutes prior to dismissal time to change clothes and prepare for their next class during the activity block. They will be allotted an additional amount of time when they participate in the swim block. WE EXPECT ALL STUDENTS TO PARTICIPATE IN ALL OUR ACTIVITIES.

“NO-NO’S”

Chewing gym, candy, pop or juice are totally prohibited in the physical education areas, including the locker room. Students may not wear jewelry, head scarves, hats or caps during gym. Do not bring: cell phones, IPods, MP3 players or cash to the gym or locker rooms. The physical education staff is not responsible for lost or stolen items.

Medical and Religious Excuses

Once a student has brought in the proper notification documenting his/her inability to participate in a physical activity from a physician/clergy, the student will be issued classwork which will take the place of a full physical program. Adaptive or modified physical education programs will be developed for students with special needs. The student’s grade will depend upon the quality of the classwork submitted BY THE DUE DATE, to be designated by their instructor. Notes from home are appreciated but, we must have professional documentation from a physician/clergy.

Health and Driver Education

Included in your physical education class will be a 10-week Driver Education unit (Sophomores) or a 18-week Health Education unit (Freshman). Your health and driver education classes will be similar in organization to your other classroom courses. You will need a notebook/folder, notebook paper, pencil, and pen(s) at all times. The notebook will contain your notes, homework assignments, worksheets, handouts, and exams. The syllabi for the Health and Driver Education components will be distributed later. Remember, successful students are always prepared.

Homework Policy

Homework will be assigned and is due on the given due date. Late work is generally not accepted. If accepted at a later date, it will have a diminished grade. The only exception is for the person who is absent and returns with a legitimate excuse. Then the assignment must be handed in upon his/her return to school. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out what you missed.

Quizzes and Tests

Quizzes may be given without notice, therefore it is suggested that you are current with your assignments and work. Quizzes may be oral or written. Tests are given at the completion of each block on material covered. In most cases, quizzes may not be made up. Tests will only be made up if proper notification is given to your class teacher, and that you can substantiate your absence. When and if a pattern of absences presents itself, you could be subject to FAILURE!

Personal Expectations

PHYSICAL EDUCATION IS EDUCATION FOR LIFE. Physical education is exciting and fun. In order to achieve the goals set forth in our department outline, students are expected to fulfill their responsibility to themselves, their instructor, and their classmates. Therefore, each student is expected to maintain good attendance and participate in each activity and Health/Driver Education class. The proper physical education uniform is mandatory. Tardiness to class is disruptive and not acceptable.

We know the above stated rules and guidelines will ensure fair treatment to all our students.
