Assignment: Choose a show to watch or listen to. It must be in English! The show must be at least 30 minutes long. You can also listen to several shorter broadcasts; if you do that, just fill out one form for each program. Remember to save this form as a new file each time and print BEFORE class!

• Do not watch sitcoms, movies, or other non-academic TV shows.

• Good choices for videos: TED Talks, BBC News, CNN, and other news, biography, and documentary programs.

• Good choices for podcasts:

❖ Any podcast from National Public Radio (NPR). Especially recommended are Invisibilia (a podcast about science and medicine, which uses stories to help listeners connect with the ideas) and How I Built This (founders of famous companies describe the process of starting and growing their business).

❖ Any podcast from Slate. Especially recommended is Working (interviews with people who do interesting jobs).

❖ Any podcast from Public Radio International (PRI). Especially recommended is The World in Words (about languages and linguistics).

❖ The Moth Radio Hour (storytelling).

• Be sure to include:

❖ Title of the talk

❖ Web address of the talk

❖ Length of the talk

• For definitions:

❖ Write at least 5 words that are important in the talk

❖ Define them in your own words to something you can understand

❖ Don’t use a word in its own definition (e.g. cynical( the quality of being a cynic)

• For the summary, try to answer all the wh-questions:

❖ WHO is the speaker? (Use last names, not just first names)

❖ WHERE does he or she work or come from? (Look at the speaker bio)

❖ WHEN did the talk or study take place? (Look at the talk title page)

❖ WHAT is the main idea of the talk?

❖ HOW does the speaker prove his or her main idea (supporting ideas)? or

❖ WHY does he or she believe what he or she believes?

❖ I should learn something after reading your summary!

• Other tips:

❖ Use your own words 100%!! Don’t use Google Translate, the speaker’s words, or words you don’t understand.

❖ Don’t just write the first few things that the speaker says; get the most important ideas.

❖ If you don’t understand the talk the first time, watch it over and over until you do.

❖ Be sure you have at least 5 complete sentences (subjects and verbs).
