Within the KPCB organization, Associate Partners have the opportunity to work hand-in-hand with various General Partners for an approximate three year tenure before either matriculating into an investing role or assuming operating responsibility in a firm-sponsored company. Accordingly, Fortis Partners is retained to identify an Associate Partner who will work closely with and provide leverage for the firm’s General Partners and make significant contributions to the partnership at-large. In particular, the successful candidate will likely spend substantial time with Ted Schlein, Ray Lane and Matt Murphy, all of whom will serve as internal sponsors and personal mentors to this individual. This person’s charge is to assist KPCB in areas related to wireless, network and IT infrastructure and consumer Internet activities and enable the firm to make better, more informed decisions to expand KPCB’s legacy as a world class service organization.

RESPONSIBILITES

• Provide leverage on the General Partners’ time to help fulfill the firm’s agenda as effectively as possible, particularly with regard to activities around wireless, networking, IT infrastructure and consumer Internet investments

• Evaluate and assess market sectors, business plans, companies and management teams identified for potential investment. This includes but is not limited to:

- Market sizing and segmentation

- Technology due diligence

- Competitive due diligence

- Identifying and engaging domain experts for answers to specific questions

• Assist existing portfolio companies in any possible way on the firm’s behalf, including:

- Leveraging personal skills and network to assist the company in any way

- Helping bring to bear the full weight of the KPCB network on the company’s behalf

- Fostering business development relationships

- Advising on product strategy, positioning and direction

- Forging partnerships and alliances

- Providing counsel with regards to capitalization and financing

- Assisting with recruiting and organizational counsel to leadership teams

• Work closely with the Partners on a wide range of other non-portfolio-related matters, including:

- Speeches and presentations

- Research and support on various policy initiatives

- Outreach initiatives to bolster the firm’s reach and reputation

• Help sift through and prioritize the myriad opportunities presented to the partnership and, when necessary, act as a surrogate on the Partners’ behalf

• Always endeavor to pursue the firm’s agenda and always be wary to protect the interests and privacy of the partnership

• Sound business judgement, exceptional written and verbal communication skills, entrepreneurial spirit and a service orientation are paramount

• Must possess deep technical aptitude, particularly with regard to wireless, networking, IT infrastructure, and consumer Internet technologies, to quickly establish credibility and earn respect within the KPCB team as well as the management teams of portfolio companies

• Must be a critical thinker and possess rigorous analytical capabilities

• Self-motivated and highly productive in independent work; able to envision, prioritize and thoroughly complete projects autonomously without requiring guidance or hand-holding

• Detail-oriented but not overly rigid; must be flexible

• Gifted networker with interpersonal skills that reflect well on KPCB; able to represent the firm in a variety of settings with a wide range of people

• An effective time manager; experienced, mature and confident enough to say no politely and influence people to “keep things on track” when necessary

• Capable of thought leadership; able to come up with new ways to “make KPCB better”

EXPERIENCE PROFILE

• A technical undergraduate degree (e.g. ME, EE, CS) from a premier academic institution

• An advanced degree, particularly an MBA from a top-flite institution, is desired though not required

• A 5-10 year track record of sound, intelligent business decisions with the demonstrated ability to manage and grow businesses

• Functional experience in engineering or product development before moving into a business and/or customer-facing role such as marketing, sales, business development or general management

• Individuals with narrow domain expertise (i.e. in only one or two similar or related industries) are not a fit. The ideal background includes a diversity of experience in a range of industries important to KPCB.

• The ideal profile is somebody with hands-on, successful operating experience in a networking or IT infrastructure company and then moved into the wireless and/or consumer Internet industry.

• The combination of experience at a large or academy technology company and a successful start-up is highly valued; a proven entrepreneurial bias is desirable

• Demonstrated record of contributing to the growth of successful businesses with experience hiring, firing and managing people

• Experience with complex financial modeling and financial engineering, as well as negotiating and structuring complex business relationships

• Track record of successful project management; able to handle multiple projects with varying constituents
