(1) Evaluating Internet Resources: Most of what is posted on the Internet has never been subjected to the rigors of peer review

common with many traditional publications. Students must learn to evaluate the reliability of information of the websites they

visit.

Select two websites that provide information about a topic related to your curriculum. Cite the URLs and names of both sites and

explain which are more reliable using evaluation criteria.

PE central

PE central is a wonderful site that contains numerous resources for Physical Education teacher. It is reviewed by numerous professionals and has links to many other credible resources. It is also .org website which is usually a site that is more reliable. There is a copyright present along with a date. The site is also in the form of a PDF file where people cannot just put other information on the site. This is also known by many professionals in the field as a reliable source of information, I myself have used it numerous times.

Two PE guys

Two PE guys is a website I found when I Google searched Physical Education. It is a site where two guys are trying to promote their services by providing children with a quality Physical Education. This would not be considered a reliable source for information about Physical Education because the site is not reviewed by anyone, but the two people who own it. Students must also be aware that this site is trying to sell something so you never know the quality of the information because they are trying to sell a product. They are going to give information that they think people want to hear to sell a product.

(2) Research with Electronic References: Since we live in the Information Age, it is particularly important that teachers are able

to access and evaluate information to prepare accurate, up-to-date lessons, and to teach their students the principles of

electronic research. In this activity you will examine a variety of electronic references in your quest to acquire information for

lessons or other professional activities.

Identify two topics to research using electronic references (broadcast news, almanacs, quotations, etc.). Research the first topic

using at least one resource from each of five categories of electronic resources. Repeat the process with the second topic, using

references from five additional categories. Include the URL, name of the resource, key information acquired, and a screen capture

from each resource. (See examples of research ideas).

Identify the special features (e.g. hypertext linking of terms, Boolean search capabilities, archival search, knowledge tree,

downloadable movies, online audio transcripts, animations, translations, reference lists, printer-friendly output, multimedia

links, PDA or bookreader download, visible directory structure, etc.) of each of the reference tools you have used.

List criteria for determining the authenticity of information on a website.

Compare and contrast electronic references with their traditional paper counterparts. Discuss at least ten tasks or features that

are possible with electronic resources that are not possible with traditional paper resources.

Develop a lesson plan that incorporates electronic references. Your lesson plan should require students to use two or more

electronic references to address a specific curricular objective.

3) Topographic or Street maps

Name of Resource: Google Maps

[pic]

Google maps are a great way for students to see what is around their school and community. Google earth provides a satellite view of anywhere on earth, and this is a great tool when studying far away lands because it can become visual right in front of a students eyes. The special effects on this site are amazing because who thought you could see a real life picture of the pyramids in Egypt or Mount Rushmore. The best part is this website resource is free to everyone.

4) Quotations

Name of Resource: Bartleby

[pic]

Quotations provide an alternative to research besides just facts. A student could search an athlete, historian, scientist, etc. and find out what they had to say about their field of specialty. It can help students gain a better understanding of the subject they are studying if they get a chance to hear about it from a different perspective than a textbook. This site contained a dictionary, background information on the person who said the quote, and annunciation of the word. There is a link that can be clicked on and the computer will read the word to the reader.

5) Encyclopedia

Name of Resource: Encarta

[pic]

An Encyclopedia is a wonderful resource for students because they have access to a huge array of information. A student can search almost anything and find some sort of useful information about the topic. It is important to inform students about the dangers of using resources that may not be reliable. If they use Encarta or Britannica it is safe to say that information is true, while a website like Wikipedia is simply average people posting information. There are no editors for the site so anything can be posted. Encarta provides pictures, audio, and video clips. It also provides web logs for anyone to post comments or opinions.

6) Broadcast News

Name of Resource: MSNBC News

[pic]

News sites have a huge amount of information from sports, nutrition, headline news, or global news. I found an article about a soccer player from the Ukraine participating in the World Cup. This website contains rosters, live game feeds, and game schedules at your fingertips.

7) Local News

Name of Resource: ABC News

[pic]

The ABC news site has a variety of information and I found an article that talks about the World Cup and this article helps students make connections between their hobbies and national political issues. Research gives opportunity for students to take relevant topics to them (World Cup soccer) and relate that to other topics (Politics). This site provides a lot of links, video, audio

8) National & International News

Name of Resource: Soccer Training Info

[pic]

I searched and found a wonderful website about soccer drills. This site contained web logs, videos, international (e.g. Argentina game schedule), dictionaries, highlights, drills, and information about their favorite players.

9) Research Database

Name of Resource: Wikipedia

[pic]

Wikipedia can be very useful, but students must be aware of the fact that Wikipedia is a site that contains information that anyone can post. An Encyclopedia is a wonderful resource for students because they have access to a huge array of information. This particular contains pictures, videos, rules, and alternative links.

10) World or Interactive Maps

Name of Resource: Terraserver USA

[pic]

Satellite maps are a wonderful way for students to explore their communities. I searched local parks in the area, and I found one that had the students engaged in multiple sport leagues. This one gave me information on a soccer league being held at Baldwin Park. This site contains pictures, interactive maps, directions, provides a link to famous places, and there is an area to put in longitude and latitude and find a destination.

Qualities to look for when determining the authenticity of a source:

✓ If there is a Copyright present and the date

✓ If the file is in the form of a PDF file

✓ Government website (gov.) because only the government has access

✓ If the website has .org

✓ If there are multiple editors to validate information

Compare and Contrast electronic resources versus traditional research material:

1. Electronic resources are must faster and work instantly.

2. Electronic resources have audio resources to hear any info (e.g. an interview).

3. Electronic resources have video files so a student can view any historic moments (e.g. earthquake).

4. Electronic resources have web logs that students can post their opinion and views about a particular topic.

5. Electronic resources have a pod cast that sends newscasts, radio broadcasts, or sharing files and songs that are sent directly to your ipod.

6. Electronic resources enable everyone to have access to a vast amount of resources.

7. Electronic resources are time efficient because you do not have to search through a magazine or newspaper. You can even press, apple shift F, and find a word that can be found in an article.

8. Electronic resources are very low in cost considering the access people have to almost any type of resource.

9. Electronic resources allow you to download information from a secondary source that traditional paper references cannot.

10. Electronic resources allow you to print articles from directly offline, and provide a URL that can allow anyone to access that article instantaneously.

LESSON PLAN

Topic: Motor Skills

Name: Kelly Patterson

Class: Physical Education

Grade Level: 9th and 10th

Major Concepts: In groups of 2-3 students will research an appropriate drill for a sport (Soccer) and present and teach it to the class.

Performance Objective / Content Standards: The student will be able to explain why the drill they chose is appropriate for soccer, and which skill and muscle groups are being used in that drill. They will also be able to correctly perform the drill correctly 3 out of 5 times.

Standard 1.1 Combine, and apply movement patterns to progress from simple to complex in aquatics, rhythms/dance, and individual and dual activities.

Materials and Equipment: 15 Soccer Balls, 2 goals, a white board, a clipboard, and an easel for posters.

Independent practice / Assignments: The assignment was to research a drill and then present it to the class. I will give them both in classroom, and out of classroom time to complete the assignment. They will also need to create a poster with a diagram of which muscles are being used during the drill.

Outline of Lesson: The lesson will begin with a few examples of different types of soccer drills, and how different drills work on different skills. Also, this lesson will be given after the lesson on muscles so this assignment will be a refresher on information they have already learned. This can be done within 2 weeks with all of the students getting a chance to present, and at the end the class will vote on the best drill that practices a skill the best.

Homework: The students will bring in a diagram of the drill, and print out the reference of where they got the drill from. They will also create a poster of the different muscles groups worked. They will all contain text and graphics that can all be done on the computer.

(3) Educational Research: Teachers should be familiar with research related to the teaching of their discipline. The Educational

Research Database (ERIC) provides access to abstracts from numerous educational publications, and is the best place to start when

conducting educational research.

Find two or more abstracts of recent, relevant articles related to the use of technology in the teaching of your subject. Summarize

implications for the teaching of your subject. Cite the articles using APA format., and include the text of the abstracts.

Gubacs, K. (2004). Project-Based Learning: A Student-Centered Approach to Integration Technology into Physical Education Teacher Education, Journal of Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance, vol. 77, n.7, p.33. Retrieved July 5, 2006, from ERIC database.

The implications of this article discuss the integration of the use of technology in the subject of Physical Education. The Physical Education curriculum is under a great deal of construction and this article discusses a new approach called PBL, project-based learning. It discusses students using digital editing technology to demonstrate understanding, and allow teachers to better assess student learning.

Title: Project-Based Learning: A Student-Centered Approach to Integrating Technology into Physical Education Teacher Education

Abstract: An appropriate venue for the use of technology in physical education is one where students are meaningfully engaged in learning activities within a supportive environment that is student centered and that involves cooperation and active learning. An appropriate point of entry for the implementation of such a framework is project-based learning (PBL), not to be confused with problem-based learning. PBL provides a context within which students are communally and meaningfully engaged in learning activities while participating in a worthwhile task. It is within such a context that technology can be successfully integrated into teaching in a way that involves complex thinking about academic and pedagogical content. The author's project required physical education students to use digital editing technology to demonstrate their understanding of a nontraditional, innovative instructional methodology. The author was able to simultaneously (1) assess the students' ability to effectively use technology in complex ways, (2) assess the students' mastery of the specific content knowledge, (3) assess the students' mastery and understanding of the innovative teaching strategy, and (4) assess the effectiveness of the teaching strategy itself. Using PBL to integrate digital technology into the learning process enabled students to learn content and innovative pedagogy while being fully engaged in the pursuit of their project.

Ladda, S, Keating, T. (2004). Including Technology in Instructional Programs, Journal of Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance, vol. 75, n.4, p. 12. Retrieved July 5, 2006, from ERIC database.

The implications of this article are that there is more out there for Physical Education programs then simple research assignments. There are multiple programs that enable teachers and students to generate reports about students’ fitness levels and scores. There are also innovative devices such as pedometers that is technology driven and very useful in the classroom.

Title: Including Technology in Instructional Programs

Abstract: The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of technology that can enhance learning in physical education and exercise science instructional programs at the K-12 level and in colleges and universities. Although technology is widely used in physical education programs, it is generally limited to software and equipment that assesses students' fitness or to the Internet as a means to obtain and share information. For example, Physical Best provides software to help track students' progress and generate reports, and commonly used equipment includes heart rate monitors and pedometers. While this deserves applause, many additional forms of technology are available, although usually only at the college level.

(4) Online Academic Journals: A growing number of academic journals are available online, some of which are free, and others of

which require a subscription.

Find an electronic journal related to your subject and include a screen capture of a relevant article. Briefly summarize the

article.

Administrators should be familiar with the legal code as it pertains to education. Research a legal case relevant to education in

secondary schools and include a screen capture from this case. Briefly summarize the case. *PTP-tip The PTP requires that

"Candidates for a Teaching Credential understand and honor legal and professional obligations to protect the privacy, health, and

safety of students, families, and other school professionals. They are aware of and act in accordance with ethical considerations

and they model ethical behaviors for students. Candidates understand and honor all laws relating to professional misconduct and

moral fitness." You may wish to cite relevant laws or cases as an aspect of an artifact for TPE 12.

This article talks about the role that Physical Educators need to take in literacy. Physical Education teachers need to start creating assignments that promote literacy and allow students to practice reading and writing. Some ideas are creating short journals, writing a sports journal, or creating task cards with critical elements.

[pic]

This article is about a Physical Education teacher who had 3 of his students taken to the hospital due to dehydration. This article seemed perfect for me because as a Physical Education teacher myself you must be aware of the environment and how students could potentially react. On days when it’s excessively hot I might skip our warm-up run and just do a light job then stretch. I would also allow them to get water whenever they felt necessary. There are rules about the activity level that students can participate in during weather. For example, if it is over 95 degrees some schools say you cannot make it mandatory to participate in activity. Every Physical Education teacher should be aware of those requirements at the beginning of each school year.

(5) Locating multimedia teaching resources: At many libraries, teachers can obtain cards which give them special privileges as

educators, including the ability to check our more resources and keep them longer. Teachers can check out books, CDs, DVDs and

videos.

Find a video related to the teaching of your course in the Los Angeles Public Library System (or other public library system), CSUN

main library, or the CSUN Teacher Curriculum Center. Describe the video resource and its call number, and if possible, find a

teacher study guide for the video by performing an Internet search.

I went to the Teacher Curriculum Center in the CSUN library and found a great DVD called Teen Health. It is an interactive game with a quiz show on it. This would be a great game to play at the end of the semester when a lot of the material has been covered. It is easy to follow and understand, which is always a bonus. There is a study guide provided inside the case of the DVD. I also found some audio CDs that I brought in as well that talk about everything from stress management, to physical fitness, to sports and conditioning.
