CALSDA

Dear Teachers,

Having successfully completed the Prize Givings for Examinations conducted in the year 2010, the CALSDA office is buzzing with preparations for the First Session of Examinations for the year 2011. We hope that all our loyal teachers have had a dynamic start to this year. The Management and Staff of CALSDA are looking forward to providing you with yet another year of high standards in Examination Services.

In this issue of The Buzz we would like to focus your attention on a upcoming Teacher Training Programme and the details of Examinations in the year 2011.

WRITTEN EXAMINATIONS 2011

The Written Examinations for the first session of this year will be conducted on Saturday the 28th of May 2011 in centres around the island.

Following several requests made by teachers, the closing date of entries has been extended up to Friday the 29th of April 2011. Please be kind enough to send in your entries to the CALSDA office without delay.

Please make every effort to bank the entry fees and ensure that the teacher’s name is written on the reverse of the Bank Credit Slip sent to us in respect of examination entry fees ( Practical and Written). This information is vital especially when the Bank Credit Slip does not accompany the entries. Please use ONE Bank Credit Slip for all your entries. We would greatly appreciate if you could avoid banking examination fees of individual candidates.

A THOUGHT ON POETRY..

“Like butterflies in Spring

Poetry awakens the Spirit,

stirs the imagination and explores

the possibilities with each stroke of its rhythmic wings.”

Judy Blume ( 1938 - )

Judy Blume is an American contemporary author. She has written many novels for children and young adults which have exceeded sales of 80 million and been translated into 31 languages.

Judy Blume spent her childhood in Elizabeth, New Jersey. She received a B.S. in education from New York University in 1961, which named her a Distinguished Alumna in 1996.

A lifelong avid reader, Blume first began writing when her children were attending preschool, and published her first book, The One in the Middle Is the Green Kangaroo, in 1969. The decade that followed proved to be her most prolific, with 13 more books being published, including many of her most well-known titles, such as Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret. (1970), Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing (1972), Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great (1972), and Blubber (1974).

The Fudge Series is probably the most popular series of stories created by Blume. The storyline of this series revolves around Peter Hatcher and his notorious younger brother, known by the nickname "Fudge". This series include the titles

Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great, Superfudge, Fudge-a-Mania and Double Fudge.

Blume has won more than ninety literary awards. In 2004, she was awarded the American National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters. In 1996 the American Library Association selected Blume for its Margaret A. Edwards Award for her contributions to young adult literature.

She also received the American Library of Congress Living Legends award in the "Writers and Artists" category in April 2000 for her significant contributions to America's cultural heritage.

Judy Blume is also an advocate for teachers reading aloud to their students. According to Judy, she gets an uncountable amount of mail from students and adults whose teachers read aloud to them. Blume says that she herself has specific memories of being read aloud to by her teachers. She believes that if teachers would take the time to introduce good books to students, perhaps there would not be as many reluctant readers.

Some of her other children’s novels include Iggie's House, It's Not the End of the World, Just As Long As We're Together Freckle Juice, Soupy Saturdays, Cool Zone and Going,Going, Gone.

(P.S. Judy Blume’s books are available for sale at local bookshops.)
