Grade 7 Science Course Syllabus

2015-2016 School Year

Instructor: Mr. Chris McDaniel

Cell Phone: (501)837-8787

E-mail: Chrisbmcdaniel@; ChrisM@

Course Goals: Students will experience science through hands-on activities and creative assignments. Students will use the scientific method to collect and interpret data and report information.

Notebooks:

Each student will be expected to keep an organized class notebook which will contain homework assignments to be turned in and all class lecture notes necessary to complete assignments and prepare for quizzes, tests, and exams. The note taking process will be discussed in class.

Homework Assignments:

Students will be expected to complete any and all homework assignments and submit them by the expected date. All homework assignments will be graded on completeness and neatness. Incomplete and partially completed homework assignments will initially receive a zero (0). A grade penalty of 25% per day will be given for late assignments. After three (3) days, a permanent zero (0) will be given. Absent students will have a maximum of five (5) school days to make up and submit missed assignments for full credit. After that, no credit will be awarded for missed assignments. Students who anticipate extended absences should inform the instructor so that appropriate arrangements can be made. Homework assignments will be posted on a daily basis on the middle school assignment board located on the Anthony School website. Students who are absent from school should check the assignment board to keep up with their daily assignments. Homework assignments will be corrected in class on the date that they are due and turned in for a grade. Incomplete homework assignments completed during the class period in which they are due will receive a zero (0).

Quizzes and Exams:

To ensure student engagement during class, frequent open note quizzes will be given over previous notes. It is each student’s responsibility to obtain notes from missed class periods. Chapter tests will be announced at least one (1) week in advance and detailed study guides for each test will be given in class. Detailed study guides will be given in class for both the Midterm and Final Exams. All quizzes, tests, and exams will cover class material determined by the instructor. If a student is not pleased with a test grade, that student may rework the incorrect questions to better understand the concepts covered in those questions and to earn additional points. There will be no test corrections available for the Midterm or Final Exam.

Grading:

Homework will be counted as approximately 65% of the final grade, while quizzes/exams will count as approximately 35% of the final grade. Students are encouraged to check their daily progress on Power School.

Attendance/Tardiness:

Students should attend class regularly. Excessive tardiness will not be tolerated. Students who are excessively tardy will be subject to action consistent with the policies outlined in the Anthony School Parent/Student Handbook.

Classroom Behavior Expectations:

Students are expected to:

•Be prompt

•Be prepared

•Be a polite and positive participant

•Be productive

•Be a peaceful problem solver

Additionally, all students are expected follow the policies as outlined in the Anthony School Parent/Student Handbook. Any deviation from these expectations will result in an appropriate and immediate action. Behavior that is disruptive to the learning of others will not be tolerated.
