The meetings were held on:October 19th, 2018November 29th, 2018February 6th, 2019March 21st, 2019Actions and activities that were taken by the district that met SHAC requirements during the 2017-2018 school year:FOR STAFF and/or COMMUNITY:Flu vaccines offered to staff, family, and students by Arthur Adcock with Red River Pharmacy – October 4 – about 20 immunizations completed (FIRST YEAR WE HAVE OFFERED TO STUDENTS)Health Screenings and flu shots were offered to staff through Aurora Concepts on December 13.Offered mobile mammograms for the staff and community through East Texas Medical Center – April 18Offered Vascular Screenings to staff and community through Wadley Scan for only $25 – March 28. We had a full schedule. Blood drives for students, staff, and community – August 20 (44 units), January 23 (40 units), and May 17. Should meet goal for scholarship. Fourth blood drive in the community suggested for next year.CPR/AED/First Aid for majority of staff and Diabetic Team Training - August 2018. See attached list.Medication Aid training for emergency team and medication aides – August 2018. See attached list.Stop the Bleed training for all staff – Spring 2018FOR STUDENTS:Tooth Fairy Program took place on February 15 for grades PK-2. Dr. Mitchel Glass from Kids Dental Center sends ‘The Tooth Fairy’ to educate on dental hygiene and to hand out dental hygiene supplies. All students PK through 5th received toothbrushes and small treasure chests for lost teeth. Toothbrushes were also offered to grades 6th through 8th. Dr. Geisler’s staff spoke to grades 3-5 about dental health and provided the children with dental hygiene supplies on February 28. Age appropriate activities and dress up days for K-12 during Red Ribbon Week October 22-26. Next year to add staged selfie photo booth.Hearing/Vision screenings for PK, K, 1, 3, 5, and 7 grades, as well as, new students and as requested. Referrals and follow up letters sent. Spinal screenings were conducted on February 13 for 5th and 7th females, 8th grade males, and parent requested screens with rescreens and referrals approximately two weeks following. Four referred. House Bill 897 was implemented for students in grades 9-12 grade as a requirement for graduation. They were provided with CPR/AED basic knowledge, skills, and instruction on March 4th. It was presented by Shannon Peacock to 9th grade and any students in 10th-12th grade that had not had it. Backpack program offered to any child in need. Food is provided by Rebecca’s Pantry and is sent home with students over the weekends and holidays. Grades K-5 participate in the SPARK Physical Education Program throughout the school year through the athletic department.Fitness Gram assessment for all students K-12 conducted by the athletic department.Live menu on BISD website through TISD that provides up to date nutritional information on meals served each day.‘Always Changing’ puberty program was presented to 5th grade on February 25th. Gender separate classes were provided and appropriate supplies were given to each child. Andrew Rankin presented male material. Jenifer Carnley RN presented female material.The “Worth the Wait” abstinence program was implemented in grades 7 and 9 on February 15th. Andrew Rankin taught males and Shannon Peacock taught females. Grades and genders were taught separately.Hygiene/handwashing classes were presented to K-2 and 3-5 on February 20 by HS STUCO with Jenifer Carnley RN supervising. Henry the Hand, educational videos/presentations, and glo-germ were used to help demonstrate the need for proper hygiene. Glo-Germ was used to help visualize how well hands were being washed. STUCO did a great job. Coaches discuss hygiene with junior high in athletics.Various health related posters posted in the school including handwashing awareness, safety awareness, safe driving posters including seatbelts and texting, health effects of drugs (inhalants, tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, methamphetamines), child abuse, healthy eating habits, etc. Bullying Prevention was implemented in grades K-5 with a character lesson on respect as well as a group discussion on bullying done through elementary staff.Emergency backpacks remain in place in each classroom. These backpacks include such items as a first aid kit, flashlight, sugar source, etc. to equip the teachers with supplies needed for field trips, evacuations, or lock downs. Safety goggles, thermometers, scissors, tourniquets, gauze, and ace wraps for packing and compression dressings were added in the last few years. Chest seals and Quick Clot were added at the end of this year. Attached is a complete list of items.Life Share Blood Drive came on August 20 (44 units), January 23 (40 units), and scheduled for May 17 for students, parents, staff, or community members to participate. Should meet goal for scholarship. Pulse oximeter in athletic bag to have for all practices and games. AED available to take to any off campus athletic event as well.Mobile Pediatric Asthma Clinic through Christus Saint Michael visited to administer FREE screenings on March 27. School is funded for each child that participates. It is FREE for students 5 years old or older.Masonic Lodge to deliver dental kits for 1st grade.Water refilling stations: one in the elementary hallway and two in the high school hallway. Refilling stations will hopefully decrease the spread of germs and illness when used in place of the water fountains. Parent education through elementary Facebook page on harmful applications and the importance of continually monitoring children’s online and phone activity. Internet safety also provided to select grades in the elementary.SHAC parents distributed goodies for elementary Halloween on October 31st with educational posters on bullying, dental hygiene, drug awareness, safety, checking candy, and stranger danger provided by STUCO and art classes.Health services tab on the BISD webpage with links to the nurse referral form, SHAC information, medical forms, and immunization information.Nurse referral system in place. Tobacco policy in place to identify and address tobacco use.Nurse Bulletin Board topics expanding and currently include child abuse, lice, bullying, flu, activity/physical fitness, poison prevention, human trafficking, and suicide prevention. Also health and safety educational videos in nurse’s office.Lice letters sent home with the specific grade affected each time.Vision certificates available– sight for seeing – through NASN/TSNO to those in need and that qualify.Dr. Hogan from Genesis Prime Care authorized BISD to stock unassigned epi-pens (for any student with an undiagnosed allergy). They are currently stocked in the front office and the nurse’s office. Already diagnosed still need to provide appropriate medication consents and epi-pens.AEDs remain by the front office and in the gym. Three new AEDs added: one in the administration building for travel, one in the cafeteria, and one at the Pre-K/Head start building. AED protocol authorized by Dr. Hogan at Genesis PrimeCare in Atlanta. See attached report and lists.CRMO education – Fall 2018Collected blankets, wash clothes, hygiene supplies for children removed from their homes in the night – state STUCO project – Spring 2019 Canned goods collected in December for Block a Teacher’s Door donated to those in need through Rebecca’s Pantry.Drug tests available in nurse’s office on an as needed basis. Consents were signed at the beginning of the year for anyone in extracurricular activities or those who drive on campus.Self-defense class for junior and senior females.Shattered dreams is scheduled for May 1st for juniors and seniors at Atlanta High School. We have several students participating in the actual event. All juniors and seniors will attend and watch the event. Aurora concepts scheduled for April 15th for student immunizations (6th grade and seniors).Heart screenings were performed by the Cody Stephens Foundation on December 10th. 47 students in 6-12th grades received EKGs FREE of charge this year.Toothbrushes and other teeth hygiene materials distributed to grades K-5 during Fall 2018.Soap, deodorant, and shampoo distributed to grades 3-5 during Fall 2018. SHAC Recommendations for 2018-2019Possibility of developing a policy and stocking Naloxone (Narcan) on munity Trunk or Treat/Fall Festival during October. Recommend health booths, fire department, police, etc.Mrs. Stroman requested the nurse call all students who are absent every day next year to assess absent reason, to check on health related matters, and to hopefully increase attendance. Recommend additional blood drive in the community.Recommend staged selfie photo booth as an additional activity for Red Ribbon Week to increase drug awareness. A photo lasts a lifetime. Everyone enjoys taking selfies. The addition of Trauma/Stop the Bleed cabinets with supplies next to the AEDs in the gym, cafeteria, and high school hallway.The addition of Raptor technology. With this security system, all volunteers, visitors, and anyone who visits the campus identification will be scanned. The system will check for warrants, sex offenses, etc. This technology is another step in keeping Bloomburg ISD safe. SHAC Goals for 2018-2019Continue to address the increased medical needs and health education needs for students through school based health services to ensure student success. ................
