Mrs

Mrs. Bell’s Grading System

Tests: 45% of Quarter Grade

There will be three or four tests per quarter based on material that we are covering. Tests will be given on literature, grammar, vocabulary, writing skills and other areas covered in class. Tests will be announced and, time permitting, a review will be held before content test is given.

Quizzes: 30% of Quarter Grade

There is on average, one quiz per week. This is on material that is being covered in class. Quizzes may or may not be announced before they are given. Therefore, it is to each student’s advantage to be prepared for class.

Writing Assignments: Test Grade

Students will have a number of writing assignments each quarter. To evaluate these writing assignments, I will be using a number of methods, but most importantly, I will be using the PA Domain Scoring Guide to assign a letter grade to the student’s writing. One of the most important papers, the research paper (Advanced Only) will be worth more. I will provide additional information as the research paper process begins.

Constructed Response Journals: Quiz Grade

While we are completing literature lessons, I will assign related journal writing assignments. When we are not working on literature I may assign other journal assignments to further develop and refine writing skills. The Constructed Response will be graded according to the Pennsylvania Reading Assessment Rubric. These present a very specific topic/question and it is important that your responses are very focused and “on topic”.

Daily Vocabulary/ Grammar: 15% of Quarter Grade

Everyday there will be a journal entry on the board. It is your responsibility to copy the journal entry into your notebook and respond. You must keep a separate notebook or at least a separate section of your notebook for these entries. At the end of the quarter I will collect all notebooks and check all journals. I will not necessarily read all of the entries; however you will lose 10 points for each missing entry. If you are absent you DO NOT have to make up the work, but you must place the date in your notebook and note that you were absent.

Quarterly Exam: 10% of Quarter Grade

The quarterly exam will be given during the last week of each quarter. The exam will consist of one constructed response and approximately 25 comprehensive multiple choice questions. The exam is specific to the curriculum.

Absences:

In the event of a student’s absence, he or she has 3 SCHOOL DAYS from the day of his or her return to make up missed work. Missed work includes: tests, quizzes, homework, class work, and journals. Anything not made up within 3 days will be given a zero! It is the student’s responsibility to find out what he or she missed in class.

The Grading Policy of the Wilkes- Barre Area School District will be used in this classroom:

A B C D E

93-100 85-92 75-84 70-74 70 and below

Extra Credit/ Class Participation:

There is no guarantee for extra credit. Please do not expect it. I, however, do expect you to participate in class. Failure to do so or to disrupt the class will result in a lower grade.
