Coloring the Periodic Table (20 pt Activity)

Objective: To be able to use the periodic table to identify and classify elements and to use the periodic table to predict the behavior of elements. Use your periodic table to help you and work in pencil!

Procedure:

1. Number the groups (vertical columns) 1- 18 across the top.

2. Number the periods (horizontal rows) 1-7 down the left hand side.

3. Draw a heavy black line between the metals and nonmetals along the bottom of the metalloids. Label this line “Metalloids”

4. Write the name of each of the groups below or next to the column corresponding to its group number:

|Group Number |Group Name |

|Group 1 |Alkali metals |

|Group 2 |Alkaline earth metal |

|Group 3-12 (collectively) |Transition metals |

|Group 11 |Coinage metals |

|Group 13 |Boron group |

|Group 14 |Carbon group |

|Group 15 |Nitrogen group |

|Group 16 |Oxygen group |

|Group 17 |Halogens |

|Group 18 |Noble gases |

5. Number the two rows or periods at the bottom of the chart 6 and 7.

6. Write the names of the two Rare Earth Metal rows at the bottom of the chart: Lanthanides and Actinides

7. Write in the chemical symbols for the seven diatomic molecules (HONClFIBr) in their respective boxes and then place two dots below the symbols in the box. ((

8. Write in the chemical symbols for the two elements that are liquids at room temperature and place a wave in the box above the chemical symbol ~

9. Write in the chemical symbols for the eleven elements that are gases at room temperature and draw a cloud around the symbol within the box

10. Use the following chart to color the periodic table with colored pencils.

|Group Name |Color |

|Alkali metals (group 1) |Dark Blue |

|Alkaline earth metal (group 2) |Light blue |

|Transition metals (group 3-12) |Dark Green |

|P-block metals (Al, Ga, In, Tl, Sn, Pb, Bi) |Light green |

|Metalloids (B, Si, Ge, As, Sb, Te, Po) |Yellow |

|Non metals (H, C, N, O, P, S, Se) |Orange |

|Halogens (group 17) |Pink |

|Noble Gases (group 18) |Brown |

|Rare Earth Metals (bottom 2 periods) |Purple |
