Lesson PlanMaxReadingLevels:1 through 12Start with Guided Reading. Group should be all the students in the classroom. No minimum number or maximum number of students. Make sure to use Google Chrome as the browser. Chrome can be installed on Mac computers. If possible, use a Smart Board or LCD projector and screen or wall. If there are no smart boards or LCD projectors in a classroom, the sessions have to be done in a computer lab where each student has a computer or tablet (like iPads).Students should be at their desks or in a group around the teacher.Start with the Level of the grade of the students.Begin by clicking the MaxVocab button at the bottom of the screen. The vocabulary words become highlighted. If teacher prefers, he/she can go around the room asking students what is the meaning of each vocabulary word. It is optional, that students can write each vocabulary word on a separate 3x5 card with the word on the front and its definition on the back. These cards can be used for future practice. Then a student should read the passage out loud to the group. If the passage is long, have two or three students come up to do the reading.Teacher needs to review with class what is the Topic of the passage, and what is the Main Idea.Teacher shows students how to activate the electronic highlighting tools, always starting with blue for the Topic. Explain that the topic is almost always in the first sentence. In other levels, it is not always in the first sentence.Explain that highlighting involves clicking on the word, NOT sliding through the word. Students can use the mouse, a stylus, or their finger. It is sometimes helpful to enlarge the size of the font by clicking on the large “A” located in the left lower part of the screen. Then activate the green highlighting tool and highlight the Main Idea. Show the students that once they have identified the main idea, slide the curser to the right of the first word and the entire phrase will have a shadow around it. Then left click and that phrase will become green. Then activate the yellow highlighter and start highlighting the important details. It is impossible to get every detail correct as each author feels slightly different. It is the process of doing the highlighting that is important. Students should highlight all words except sight words and connecting words. Avoid highlighting words like “the,” “he,” “she,” “then,” “and,” “or.”Then click on “DONE!” The student will receive a numeric score for correctly identifying the Topic, the Main Idea, and the Important Details. If the student gets the Topic correct, the score will be 100%. If the Main Idea is correct, the score will also be 100%. If the student gets 60% or better on the details, he/she can get an “A” on the chapter if all the questions were answered correctly. After doing the highlighting, students then do the Outline and/or the Summary, typing directly onto the space in the program. The teacher can teach outlining as she/he prefers. The summary should follow the instructions of one main idea sentence; three detail sentences; one conclusion sentence which is the student’s opinion of the passage. While doing the outline and summary, make sure the student clicks on SAVE each time, especially when the student returns to the passage. Then answer each of the questions. If this is done as a group session, the teacher should read each question and each response. The students should agree on the answer. Remember, the question that has to do with important details usually has more than one answer. The computer will give the student instant feedback as to whether he/she has answered the question correctly. After the last question is answered, the computer will give a grade incorporating the score on the highlighting and the questions. It will always be a letter grade. The students really like this feature, especially because the score is provided instantly. Then click on “Go to Questions.” There will be five questions, each with four responses. In the group session, the teacher will read the question and each of the responses. Each question will be graded immediately. At the end of all the questions, the student will be given a score card with the score for Highlighting, for Questions, and a letter grade for the Final Score. The student can look at the right answers by clicking the button at the bottom of the screen. The Vocabulary games are available for additional drill and practice of the vocabulary words in the passage.Click on “Next Chapter” to advance to the next passage. The teacher should do at least 5 chapters as group sessions to make sure that each student understands the process of highlighting and is clear on what is a Topic, what is a Main Idea, and what is an Important Detail. Then the students can proceed to the computers or tablets on their own. They do not need headphones for this exercise. After the teacher has done 3 to 5 guided readings, the students are ready to go onto their own computers or tablets.Make sure that each computer used by each student has Google Chrome, and that the student uses Chrome to run MaxScholar. The student follows each step above.
