Addams decided to establish Hull House in Chicago to assist the many poor immigrants to the United States who were moving to that fast-growing American city. Chicago was an important destination for immigrants because it contained a major port and acted as a conduit for rail-travel between the east and West. It was also a booming industrial center with a high demand for labor. the assistance provided at Hull House took on many forms: day care, kindergartens, libraries, an art gallery, an employment agency, and a meeting place for trade unions. The Hull House Neighborhood Hull House opened in 1889 during a period noted for the rapid rise of so-called "new immigrants": those from southern, central, and eastern Europe. Settlement houses such as the Hull House were particularly important to new immigrants, who could benefit from assistance because they were moving to a place where few people from their own home had already settled. these immigrants also tended to be poor, uneducated, and non-English speakers, all of which made it more challenging to survive and prosper in the United States. many lived in small, crowded apartment buildings called tenements, which were often plagued by disease or crime.Addams intentionally placed Hull House in an extremely diverse neighborhood in Chicago, the Near West side. this neighborhood was the home of many of Chicago's most recent immigrants, most of them from central, southern, and eastern Europe3274828403372Caption: this map, created by Hull House as part of its effort to study the neighborhood where it was located, shows the ethnic make-up of Chicago's Near West side. this map first appeared in 1895 in Hull-House Maps and Papers.00Caption: this map, created by Hull House as part of its effort to study the neighborhood where it was located, shows the ethnic make-up of Chicago's Near West side. this map first appeared in 1895 in Hull-House Maps and Papers..
