Brett StantonBefore starting as the Superintendent of the Guntersville City Schools on February 4, 2015, Brett Stanton served as Superintendent of the Haralson County School System (Georgia) from July 1, 2008 – January 30, 2015. When asked what he enjoys about his job, he replied, "It's a thrill to take on each day's challenges and meaningfully contribute to the quality of the lives of our students, faculty, staff and community members." In August 2012, Mr. Stanton was recognized with the distinction of being named First Runner-Up for the Superintendent of the Year Award by the National Association of School Superintendents. Under his guidance, the school system obtained Georgia's highest level of accreditation by the AdvancED Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS)/Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (CASI) District Accreditation. Committee Chairperson Dr. J. Drew Moore said, “Mr. Stanton clearly has a great vision for his school district and has led the Haralson County School System through impressive steps of growth during his tenure. It is evident that he readily accepted formidable challenges and has led them to not only meet the challenges but to excel. Most notable, as I visited throughout the district, were the deep levels of collaboration among the professionals concerning their daily work that only comes from intense, consistent focus on their work." Over the last few years, the Haralson County School System has been recognized at state and national levels for its aggressive approach to incorporating technology integration into the classrooms. The school system was one of two Georgia school systems to receive a $1.7 million 21st Century Blended Technology Grant and one of twenty school systems nationwide to receive a $500,000.00 Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Blended Learning Grant. These programs have played a critical role in the integration of face-to-face instruction with online learning through the use of netbooks, with emphases on math and science. Community involvement is an integral aspect of Mr. Stanton's leadership style. Memberships include Lions Club (Past President), Kiwanis Club (Current President) and Rotary Club. He's been selected for and completed several locally sponsored leadership programs, including Leadership Bartow County/Cartersville, Leadership Lowndes County/Valdosta and Leadership Haralson County. He is on the Chamber of Commerce Board, on the Educated Workforce Committee, and is the secretary for CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) for underprivileged children. Mr. Stanton graduated from North Cobb High School in Acworth, GA where he was a four sport athlete participating in football, basketball, baseball and track. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree from South Carolina's Newberry College on an academic and athletic (football) scholarship. He received two Master of Science in Education Degrees from Alabama’s Jacksonville State University. One of the Master Degrees came in history/education and the other in educational leadership. Mr. Stanton completed his Educational Specialist Degree in educational leadership at Jacksonville State University as well. He has continued to be a lifelong learner by completing a variety of selective professional development opportunities including, but not limited to the following: The Georgia School Superintendents Association (GSSA) Two-Year Superintendents Professional Development Program (SPDP).Over the years, Mr. Stanton has received commendations from President George W. Bush, Georgia Governor Roy Barnes, United States Senator Johnny Isakson, United States Congressman Phil Gingrey, Former State School Superintendent Kathy Cox and numerous other state legislators. He has spoken at numerous national conferences, including the National Blue Ribbon Schools Conference, the Annual Southern Regional Education Board Conference, the National Renaissance Conference, the American Association of School Administrators Conference, the Professional Association of Georgia Educators Conference, and the Georgia School Boards Conference to name a few. Mr. Stanton was selected and trained to serve as a chairperson for AdvancED SACS CASI District Accreditation Protocol and Standards Review Process and he was one of a handful of superintendents selected to serve as Trustee for the Georgia School Boards Association (GSBA). He was selected as one (1) of five (5) superintendents in the state of Georgia to participate in the Schlechty Centers Superintendents' Leadership Network with the endorsement and sponsorship of the Professional Association of Georgia Educators. Mr. Stanton was selected by the prestigious National Center for Education Research & Technology (NCERT). This organization is comprised of prominent school system superintendents from throughout the country. Membership is by invitation and limited to only eighty-five (85) superintendents from around the country. Most recently, Mr. Stanton was selected and approved to represent the state of Alabama on the “Committee of 100’ for the American Association of School Administrators (AASA). This committee is composed of two (2) school system superintendents from each of the fifty states. Mr. Stanton is married to the former Denise Dunn and they have three (daughters) including Katie, Mary Claire and Sadie. ................
