About the Legal Writing Institute

The Legal Writing Institute is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving legal writing by providing a forum for discussion and scholarship about legal writing, analysis, and research. LWI promotes these activities through its publications, workshops, specialty conferences, and the national biennial conferences held in even-numbered years. Our next conference will be June 27-30, 2010, at Marco Island, Florida.

The Legal Writing Institute has over 2,100 members and includes representatives from 38 different countries. We are the second largest organization of law professors in the United States. Only the Association of American Law Schools (AALS) involves more members of the legal academic community. LWI sponsors many different working committees and projects, including these workshops for new professors of legal writing and adjunct professors who teach legal writing.

Membership in LWI is free. Major membership benefits include:

• Legal Writing: Journal of the Legal Writing Institute

• The Second Draft (LWI newsletter published twice a year)

• Biennial Conferences

• Storytelling Conference

• Legal Writing Listserve

• SSRN for Legal Writing

• Idea Bank

• A friendly and supportive community

• Advocacy on behalf of the legal writing community
