Complete peace of mind!Dr Stephen Murray is the founder and principal Skin Doctor at Capricorn Skin & Laser Centre. ?He has completed advanced training in vasectomy and has perfected the specialised technique he performs within the Clinic. ?Dr Murray has performed well over 1000 non-scalpel vasectomy procedures within Capricorn Skin & Laser Centre and has a proven record of success within the field. What is a Vasectomy? For couples in a stable relationship who have completed their family vasectomy takes away the concern of unplanned pregnancy. Using a modern 'no-scalpel' technique, the vasectomy is performed with minimal discomfort.Vasectomy is one of the safest and most effective methods of permanent birth control. The procedure involves cutting the vas deferens (the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles), preventing sperm from being added into the man's ejaculation fluid (semen), and preventing an unplanned pregnancy. It is important that both you and your partner have no reservations about having a permanent form of contraception. It is possible for a specialist to reverse the procedure however it is not always successful. Vasectomy should be considered permanent. When planning for the operation, please allowed two days to recuperate afterward (longer if you have a strenuous manual job), and if possible, arrange for someone to drive you home afterward.Advantages of VasectomyA one-time, relatively inexpensive costSpecialised No-Scalpel techniqueQuick recoveryMore dependable than any other form of birth controlLess expensive and poses less of a medical risk than female sterilisationEasier to reverse than female sterilisation (but should be considered permanent)Eliminates risks to female partner of oral contraceptives or IUDsFreedom from hassle and worry of contraceptionConventional Vasectomy(Not performed at Capricorn Skin & Laser Centre)During conventional vasectomies, a local anaesthetic is given with a needle and a 1-2 cm incision is made in the scrotum with a scalpel. The vas deferens is revealed, cut and blocked. The incision is then closed with sutures and the procedure is repeated on the other side.Non Scalpel Vasectomy(The method used at Capricorn Skin & Laser Centre)In our on-site operating theatre at Capricorn Skin & Laser Centre, we offer you the no scalpel vasectomy technique. No scalpel is used to make a traditional incision. Instead, our surgeon avoids complex surgery by carefully isolating the vas deferens using the fingers of one hand. The vasa are then fixed just below the scrotal skin with an instrument designed to hold firmly without pinching. A single small puncture is made with pointed forceps. The vasa are then delivered through the skin, cut, and sealed (the distal vas is left opened and is buried under the fascia). When the operation is complete, a dissolvable suture is used to close the tiny opening. This will break down in time and no post-operative visits are required. Please note: - There are still sperm remaining in the tubules. They will eventually clear with ejaculations. It is important to do the sperm counts post-operative as instructed. You will not notice any difference when you ejaculate in either sensation or appearance of the semen. The advantages of this method are:Less anaesthetic with less bruisingLess discomfortFaster recoveryLess bleedingLess painFewer complicationsSooner resumption of intercourseHow will vasectomy affect me?Vasectomy only interrupts the tubes that carry sperm from the testes to where they are added to your semen. You penis and testes are not altered. All hormonal and sexual functions are unaffected, so your voice, body hair and interest in sex remain the same. Your body still produces semen, and erections and ejaculation occur normally. The only difference is that your semen will no longer contain sperm. As before, the body naturally absorbs the unused sperm. Is a vasectomy painful? You may feel some discomfort when the local anaesthetic is given.?After it takes effect, you should feel no pain, though some men may feel a slight tugging sensation as the vasa are manipulated. After surgery you may feel sore for a few days. Generally, two or three days of rest and recovery are enough before men return to work and most normal, non-strenuous physical activity. Are there any risks to the procedure?Any medical procedure, no matter how minor, carries some degree of risk. No-scalpel vasectomy is no different, though the risks are quite low and are lower than conventional vasectomy. Here are the complications that are possible (though very unlikely) to occur:Bleeding or bruising (typically minor)InfectionVasectomy failure (very rare, but it is possible for sperm to cross the void between the two blocked ends of the vas deferens)Sperm granuloma (a hard, pea-sized lump that results from sperm leaking from the cut end of the vas deferens - these are not harmful and typically disappear with time)Congestion (a sense of pressure caused by sperm in the testes and epididymis which may cause some discomfort for some 2 to 12 weeks after vasectomy - like sperm granuloma, congestion resolves itself in time)About 5:1000 cases may develop a long standing testicular pain and this is likely due to back pressure build up - some of these cases require surgeryMany studies have looked at the long term health effects of vasectomy. The evidence is reassuring, suggesting that no permanent risks exist. Men who have a vasectomy are no more likely than other men to develop cancer, heart disease or other health problems. Can a vasectomy be reversed? In many cases, the cut ends of the vas deferens can be surgically reattached. However, this operation (called a vasovasostomy) is expensive and for a variety of reasons, does not guarantee a return to fertility. Vasectomy should therefore be considered a PERMANENT procedure. Before you choose to have a vasectomy, make quite sure that you and your partner do not want any more children. If you're thinking about a reversal now, perhaps you should take more time to decide whether vasectomy is right for you.Pre-operative InformationIt is necessary to confirm your operation the day before your appointment, we will call you. If we miss you please make sure you return our call and confirm. If you fail to confirm, your operation may be cancelled for that day. Please take the time to print and complete the New Patient forms (attached), and bring them in with you on the day of your procedure. ?This will save you time when you present for your appointment.Physically, you will need to completely shave the front of the scrotum across to the sides of the groin and up the underside of the penis. It is not necessary to shave the pubic hair above the penis.?Please bring supportive underwear for after your procedure. You may eat and drink as normal both pre and post-op.Ensure you know the location of the Clinic. Keep in mind there is paperwork to be completed prior, and we ask you to arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment time. It may be helpful to contact the clinic 30 minutes prior to your procedure to see how the Surgeon is running for time. That way we can advise if there are any delays to your procedure.Payment needs to be made before leaving the Practice. We do require a $115 deposit at the time of booking which?will be deducted off the total cost of the procedure.Post-operative InformationRest and do not shower for at least 24 hours. Wear supportive underwear (or even a pair of Speedos) until you are free of discomfort. Take pain relief as directed until the discomfort has settled. You can start sexual activity when you feel able (usually about a week) but wait until you are completely discomfort free. (Note: You must use alternative contraception until a zero sperm count is returned from your submitted samples).Submit the first semen analysis after 20 - 25 ejaculates. Take the sample to any laboratory with the pathology form given by your surgeon. If the count is zero you may stop contraception. If the first count is not zero, please continue using contraception. Submit another sample for semen analysis after 10 - 15 more ejaculates.Always, do not hesitate to contact us if there are any concerns or queries.Procedure TimingDr Stephen Murray performs all surgical procedures on Tuesday and Thursday each week.Generally, consultation and procedure are done on the same day unless requested by the patient. Your consultation and procedure should take no more than 45 minutes however; you will need to stay for a little longer for recovery prior to leaving the clinic.Being a surgical day, there is always the possibility that procedures before you on the day have turned out more complex than expected, and in turn have delayed the surgical list. If you are concerned about delays, you are welcome to contact the practice 30 – 60 minutes prior to your procedure and get an updated time from our reception staff.
