REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

4.5L and 4.9L Engines

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

2. Remove the serpentine belt.

3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.

4. Remove the right front tire. Remove the right front air deflector.

5. Loosen and reposition the heater bypass line.

6. Remove the crankshaft pulley-to-crankshaft pulley bolt. Attach a wheel puller to the crankshaft pulley. Using a pilot between the crankshaft and the center bolt, press the crankshaft pulley from the crankshaft. Remove the Woodruff® key from the crankshaft.

7. Using a small prybar, pry the oil seal from the timing case cover, and discard it.

To install:

8. Clean the oil seal mounting surface. Lubricate the new seal with engine oil.

9. Using a hammer and the oil seal installation tool, drive the new seal into the timing case cover until it seats.

10. Lubricate the bore of the hub and the inside diameter of the seal with EP lubricant to prevent seizure to the crankshaft and provide lubrication to the oil seal lip.

11. Position the damper onto the crankshaft, lining up the key slot in the hub with the key on the crankshaft.

12. Position the installer on end of the crankshaft. Position the thrust bearing with the inner race forward, then the washer. The installer nut is last. Install the damper on the crankshaft by tightening the installer nut.

13. The hub will bottom out on the crankshaft. Tighten the installer nut to 65 ft. lbs. (90 Nm) to ensure the balancer and timing gear are fully seated. Remove the installer and reinstall the bolt/washer into the crankshaft. Tighten to 65 ft. lbs. (90 Nm).

14. Install the heater bypass line.

15. Install the right front air deflector. Install the right front tire.

16. Install the serpentine belt.

17. Connect the negative battery cable.
