Removal & Installation

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

2. Remove the belts from the crankshaft pulley.

3. Remove the crankshaft damper attaching bolt.

4. Attach a suitable puller to the damper and remove the damper from the crankshaft.

On certain models, removal of the cooling fan, fan shroud or radiator may be necessary for clearance.

WARNING

DO NOT pry on the damper assembly to remove it from the vehicle or component damage will result. Remove the damper using a puller

only.

5. Installation is the reverse of removal. Torque the damper bolt to specification.

Buick Built Engines

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Drain the cooling system.

CAUTION

When draining the coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted by the ethylene glycol antifreeze, and are quite likely to

drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantity. Always

drain the coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or several years old.

2. Remove the radiator, fan, pulley and belt.

3. Remove the fuel pump and alternator, if necessary to remove cover.

4. Remove the distributor. If the timing chain and sprockets will not be disturbed, note the position of the distributor for installation in the same position.

5. Remove the thermostat bypass hose.

6. Remove the harmonic balancer.

7. Remove the timing chain-to-crankcase bolts.

8. Remove the oil pan-to-timing chain cover bolts and remove the timing chain cover.

9. Using a punch, drive out the old seal and the shedder toward the rear of the seal.

To install:

10. Coil the new packing around the opening so the ends are at the top. Drive in the shedder using a punch. Stake it in place at three locations. Properly size the packing by rotating a hammer handle around the packing until the balancer hub can be inserted through the opening. Before beginning reassembly, remove the oil pump cover and pack the entire oil pump cavity tightly with petroleum grease. If this is not done, the oil pump cannot prime itself and the engine will be damaged. Coat the cover bolts with sealer.

11. Install the oil pan-to-timing chain cover and bolts.

12. Install the timing chain-to-crankcase bolts and torque to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm).

13. Install the harmonic balancer using balancer installer tool.

14. Install the thermostat bypass hose.

15. Install the distributor to the same position as removed.

16. Install the fuel pump and alternator.

17. Install the radiator, fan, pulley and belt.

18. Connect the negative battery cable. Refill the cooling system.
