Other things will distract us this November, but I hope and pray we can all spend a good amount of time intentionally giving thanks for all that we have, for all that we are, and for all those that so enrich our lives. Tami Brooke suggested we all get a pumpkin and each day of the month write something for which we are thankful and then use the pumpkin as a centerpiece for our Thanksgiving meal. What a great idea.Because November is a month marked by gratitude our Stewardship Team chooses this time of the year for St. Mark’s Annual Pledge Campaign. This is the time when, through our time, talent, and treasure, we express the thanks we have for God and the St. Mark’s community where we worship, are formed as Christians, and share in fellowship with others on the same spiritual journey.2020 has been a very difficult year. We’ve found a new normal, but it’s not the same. Yet, despite the challenges, there have been gifts and grace. Whatever makes you thankful, I hope and pray you take the time to express your gratitude intentionally and fully. It may change the way you see 2020.In Christ,Mother Susan+-10477553975Eve of All Souls’ Day5 pm – November 1A Service of Evening Prayer where names of our dearly departed will be readOn Facebook LIVEFrom the Parish RegistersBurials: October 17 – Joyce L. NewmanRegathering-1905014605After a great deal of prayer and planning, and in consultation with Bishop Knisely, the Regathering Team has developed protocols for safe indoor worship for St. Mark’s at 5 pm on Saturdays and 9 am on Sundays. We will regather on All Saints Sunday for a shortened 30-minute service, which is the guideline for time gathered indoors, that will include the Eucharist. In keeping with RI state guidelines, all participants must sign up to facilitate contact tracing, wear masks, maintain social distancing, and hand sanitizing. You will find pews open on opposite ends, tape on the floor to mark off 6 feet, a hand sanitizing station, windows open and overhead fans on to help with ventilation. When you sign up (the link will be in the Thursday e-news) you will be asked if you are free of COVID symptoms. We trust everyone to be honest and keep us all safe. Directions for receiving communion are as follows: maintain 6 feet distance coming up the aisle. (If you exit your pew on a side aisle, move to the back and then up the aisle.) Keeping your mask on, extend your hands and let Mother Susan place the wafer without any contact. (If there is contact, she will stop and sanitize her hands.) Keeping the bread in your hand move to the left or right and stop 6 ft away, lift your mask from the bottom and consume the bread. Continue back to your seat.We are used to saying names of those who are ill, but that is not recommended, so, while they will be printed, only the reader will say them. Likewise, there will be no response after each petition in the prayers. We may say the Lord’s Prayer together, but there is no physical sharing of the Peace. Remain in your seat until dismissal. We will exit from the back.It has been noted that little spread of the virus is happening during services that follow strict guidelines. Instead, church spread is happening as a result of impromptu gatherings after church. Talk with friends in the parking lot, but keep masks on and maintain distance. (cont. next page)This is not what we are used to, but as our Stewardship Team has called us, we are “together in new ways.” This is a temporary “new normal.” There will come a time when we can safely gather for the full service we are used to complete with the singing of hymns and prayers said out loud and together. Until then, your Regathering Team has devised the safest way possible for us to regather for worship. For those who won’t find it safe to worship in the church, have no fear, the church will continue to come to you via Facebook LIVE.Outreach-1397034925We who volunteer at the food pantry would like to share with you some of the experiences we have had with our guests. During these gatherings, whether in the undercroft or the church parking lot, more than just food is shared. There is companionship, humor, celebrations, and sometimes condolences. First, we would like the parish to know how truly thankful our guests are for the assistance they receive from St. Mark’s. Month after month our guests stop and take the time to say thank you and share how helpful and, at times, needed this ministry is to them. One Saturday afternoon after the pantry was over Joanne and I were in the undercroft getting ready to head home when there was a knock at the door. It was a guest who was wondering if we were still open. I told him we were and he was lucky to come at the time he did because we were just about to head out. He replied he was very lucky because there wasn’t any food back at his home. There is not a month that goes by without a number of our guests saying that they really miss the community lunch and the chance to visit with friends. Every month, two ladies named Mary drive to the pantry separately and whoever gets there first waits out of line for the other so they can park side by side and visit with each other while waiting for their groceries. Last month they told me this is now the only time they get to see each other face to face. There is lots of laughter and joking around during the pantry. Just last month, while talking with two women who were picking up groceries, I heard my first mask joke. The woman who was driving miscommunicated the number of households they were there to pick up for and her friend corrected her. The driver then apologized saying she was having a tough day and couldn’t get anything right. Her friend said the reason for her confusion was that her mask was too tight and we all started laughing! As they drove away the passenger yelled to me I was free to use her joke anytime I wanted.Even though we only meet monthly for a short time, our guests feel comfortable enough sharing what is happening in their lives. We hear of new grandchildren being born, the accomplishments of their sons and daughters, along with birthdays and anniversaries being celebrated. At other times, they share the hospitalizations and passing of loved ones and we always take the time to listen and support them. None of what takes place on the last Saturday of the month could happen without the generous support we get from our parish as well as from St. Tim’s and St. Barnabas and others in the community. We who volunteer at the food pantry truly appreciate and are extremely thankful for all the support and help we receive. For some this is not an easy thing to do in a year of a pandemic, but the one blessing we all have in common is St. Marks. The Stewardship committee theme this year is “Together in New Ways.” Even though we have not yet been able to practice our faith in the traditional ways, Mother Susan and the Vestry have worked to reach out to parishioners to stay connected. We were able to have services online and the outside “Mass on the Grass” service. The stewardship team understands some of you may have had a financial impact because of COVID-19 and others may have some savings in their budget because of lower expenses. We will be reaching out to all in the upcoming weeks to ask you to look into your hearts and respond generously to your 2021 St. Marks pledge. Please return your card by November 29 when they will be presented at the altar in grateful thanksgiving for all the God has done for us.Thank you,Happy Thanksgiving to all,Robin Monica62738038735September FinancialsRevenues: $12,936.75Expenses: $18,765.11*As of September 30, we are behind 3 months of Apportionment ($6,009.00)00September FinancialsRevenues: $12,936.75Expenses: $18,765.11*As of September 30, we are behind 3 months of Apportionment ($6,009.00)Newsletter Deadline The deadline for the December Light is November 15, 2020.
