Hold up plastic fruits and vegetables and let the children name them. Have them raise their hands if they have tried that particular fruit/vegetable. Discuss if the fruit is juicy/sweet/ hard/crunchy. Read “I Love to Eat Fruits and Vegetables” or “Concentrating on Fruits and Veggies” (or similar)There are many wonderful fruits and vegetables to eat and they are all waiting for you to try them! Fruits and vegetables are important to eat to keep our bodies healthy and strong. Sometimes you need to try them a couple of times before you like it. Does anyone know where fruits and vegetables come from? Seeds (from the garden, tree, etc.) We need lots of different kinds of foods to be healthy. Each food does something special for our bodies (carrots help eyesight, milk helps our bones, spinach helps our muscles, etc.). Demonstration with plastic “My Plate” plate and plastic food examples. Have children sort the plastic food into the different compartments (grain, dairy, protein, fruit or vegetable). Tell the children that you are going to think about the many healthy foods while playing “Simon Says.” Explain directions. (Pop like popcorn, grow tall like an apple tree, wiggle like string cheese, be round like an orange, stiff like a carrot, twist like a pretzel).Resources used (story books, video, props): NOTE: VIDEO PORTION MUST NOT EXCEED MORE THAN HALF OF TOTAL TIME OF PRESENTATION Suggested activities: Read book “Concentrating on Fruits and Veggies” by Michelle Lombardo (Organ Wise Guys)Play game: Make copies of fruit and vegetable pictures and glue them on index cards. Have students sit in a circle and give each child a card. Have each child look at the fruit or vegetable which you gave them on the card. After all children know what they have on the card, say “I’m going to say the name of two fruits and vegetables. When I say the name of your fruit or vegetable, stand up and trade places with the person who is holding the other fruit or vegetable that I call.”Puppet Show: Interview with Mr. and Mrs. BroccoliResources may be found for My Plate at Children’s Health Promotions are developed utilizing best practice references such as the “Kansas and Missouri Core Competencies for Early Childhood and Youth Professionals” (Content Area V: Health and Safety), and the National Health and Safety Performance Standards, “Caring for Our Children.” Consultants developing new lessons for children’s health promotions should use this template and submit to the CCHC Program Manager for approval. Health Promotion Lesson Plans already approved by the CCHC Program Manager are approved for use by any contracting LPHA. Approved lesson plans are reviewed by the CCHC Program Manager at a minimum of every three years, and are therefore considered approved if in circulation until otherwise instructed by the CCHC Program Manager. ................
