Bay Area Science Festival – Volunteer OpportunitiesUCSF’s Science & Health Education Partnership (SEP) is excited to announce the 2018 Bay Area Science Festival (10/26/18 to 11/3/18). ?With the finale event at AT&T Park this year on?Saturday, November 3, 2018.?WHAT: A celebration of the unique science and technology of the Bay Area. Scientists from our local universities, companies, and museums will share their stories, passion and fun science activities, as they highlight the excitement of science in the Bay Area!?EVENTS: Hundreds of hands-on-activities, provocative conversations, electrifying performances, and tours of cutting--edge facilities. ?More information can be found at: ??We have a number of?Opportunities for Scientists?to be involved during the Science Festival week (see below) and at our finale event:??Discovery Days at AT&T Park?-?Saturday, November 3rd at AT&T Park, this year's event runs from 11:00am (with early access at 10:30am) to 4:30pm. ??This free event will be the grand finale of the Bay Area Science Festival. ?It will feature hands-on science for everyone, including interactive activities, comedians, and stage shows to captivate and excite any aspiring scientist. ??VOLUNTEERS NEEDED at Discovery Days: ?·?????To run educational science booths with hands-on activities for families. ?We have shifts to choose from: 10am-12:30pm (includes set-up), 12pm-2:30pm or 2pm-4:45pm (includes clean-up).SEP Booth Activities include:1. ???Floating and Sinking: Help children experiment and problem solve to find out the best design to make their "ship" float and hold cargo. How does it change in fresh water vs. saltwater?2. ???Senses: Our senses allow us to detect and experience our environment in multiple ways. ?These activities allow visitors to experience and engage with three of their senses and to learn more about how the brain collects information through our senses.3.????Hand and Joint models?- What would you do without your joints? Your movement and everyday activities would be greatly affected. Kids come and see what that would be like by trying some simple tasks without the use of the joints in their hands.?Activity booth with Novozymes (Festival Sponsor)?-?Novozymes is a biotech company that has sponsored the Bay Area Science Festival for many years. They are looking for about 25 volunteers to work side by side with Novozymes employees to engage attendees in an Oobleck making activity, help prep materials and help with crowd control.??Other Activities at AT&T Park (your?help here is greatly valued!)·?????To help with set up /"load-in"?(this means, helping us get materials to booths for all of the 120+ exhibits coming to AT&T Park). ?This is from 7am-10:30am, so if you don’t mind waking up early and using your muscles, you can come early and see the AT&T Park in it’s more raw/empty form.·?????To help with Breakdown/"LOAD-OUT"?- this means, after the Discovery Day Event closes at 4pm, helping us to get all the materials from the exhibit booths down to the exhibitor's vehicles. This is from 4:15pm-6:30pm·?????To help with Evaluation: this involves using an electronic evaluation to ask participants as they leave an exhibit booth to briefly fill out a form to give feedback on their experience with an exhibit. This work is extremely valuable to the Science Festival. ?Volunteer shifts are from 10:30am-2pm or 1pm-4:30pm.??Other SEP Scientist Volunteer Opportunities:·???North Bay Discovery Days in Santa Rosa? -?Saturday 10/27. Open to the public: 10 a.m. to 4p.m. Volunteers needed to run an educational science booth with hands-on activities for families (from 10:00am-4pm (shifts available). Limited transportation to Santa Rosa will be coordinated for interested volunteers. ?This is best for those volunteers with a car or living in the North Bay.·???CSU??East ?Bay??Concord Discovery Day- Saturday 10/27. Open to the public: 10 a.m. to 2p.m. Volunteers needed to run an educational science booth with hands-on activities for families (from 10:00am-2pm (shifts available).
