UNIVERSITY OF EAST LONDON

THE SCHOOL OF HEALTH, SPORT & BIOSCIENCE

Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Health Promotion and Public Health

The University of East London is a dynamic, diverse, multicultural and rapidly expanding University at the heart of Europe’s largest regeneration area and immediately adjacent to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. With a record 24,000 students it was rated among the top three modern (post-‘92) universities in London for research, and in the top 7 in the UK.

Based at our Stratford campus, the School of Health, Sport and Bioscience brings together UEL’s innovative research and teaching in the fields of the Allied Health Professions, Health Studies and Biosciences. In the recent RAE, we were in the top 50% of all submissions in unit 12 and in the top 3 Universities overall in London for Unit 12 with the majority of our research judged at international or international excellence with some world-leading outputs. Current key research themes focus on the health legacy of the London 2012 games, the management of chronic diseases and development of new therapies. Such research is carried out in close collaboration with international and national partners including local NHS Trusts. The highly successful research institute, the Institute of Human Health & Development, is also associated strongly with Health Studies ().

We have a long history in the Health professions, for example we ran the first Physiotherapy BSc in England and are the only provider of clinical and training facilities in podiatry in London. Both of these are delivered in our new Centre for Clinical Education. We have an active Bioscience area too and in fact the miniature roses that everyone has nowadays were developed in our Biotechnology laboratories. We have notable successes in our graduates, some of whom have gone on to be members of the House of Lords, CEOs in industry and lead roles in PCTs. Previous graduates from Health Studies have gone on to gain employment in a variety of areas including; Oral Health Promotion Officer, Dental Health Manager, Health Trainer, Smoking Cessation Officer and Healthy Eating Advisor, Social Marketing Policy Officer and Cancer Care Manager alongside a number of students working locally in London based PCTs and NHS trusts and London based public and private organisations. Other students prefer to continue their studies to include a PGCE, MSc or PhD.

Health Studies is concerned with the education and research development for students studying on the Public Health, Health Services Management, Health Promotion and Combined Health Studies programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. We work closely with local PCTs and NHS Trusts throughout London. For example, students at level 3 have the opportunity to apply for the ‘earn and learn’ programme which enables a small number to gain paid work experience in a local PCT whilst studying at the same time.

To meet the increasing demand for workers in the health care field in the areas of heath promotion, public health and health services management our programmes aim to equip students with the knowledge and skills to be able to pursue a career in these areas. Currently, we are re-validating all the Health Studies programmes in response to local and national employer consultations. The new programmes focus on the students’ future career opportunities and aim to strengthen their employment prospects.

Health Studies programmes incorporate key generic skills including lifelong learning and employability skills. These skills are embedded into the curriculum throughout students’ studies to enable students to develop their own generic skills and prepare them for continuing learning and employment. Students on health studies programmes are taught and assessed through a variety of different methods. The focus is on student centred learning and the health studies team is committed to a student centred approach that promotes active learning and the development of attitudes and skills that promote lifelong learning and continuing professional development. We value individualism in our students and recognise that our diverse student population requires a range of learning and teaching strategies that accommodates students’ individual needs.

In the Health Studies Subject Area we wish to further develop our NHS contacts and CPD provision and to significantly expand our current provision and relationship with local PCTs and NHS London. We also wish to further develop our international programmes and are engaging in an active programme to improve our student experience and success rates, our NSS responses and our league table standing.

The School has experienced considerable growth over the last 5 years, approximately 10-15% per annum and has grown to over 2,300 students! In addition, we are currently rapidly developing our post graduate and research programme, involving wide collaboration in the UK and overseas. Owing to this continued success and our growing student numbers we are looking for vibrant and ambitious individuals to help us realise our vision for the future. Such individuals will have the opportunity to develop and grow with the School and University.
