This is promoted by: providing families with information on healthy eating in the preschool handbook, preschool enrolment pack and throughout the yeardisplaying information on the Australian Dietary Guidelines and the Australian Guide to Healthy Eatingincorporating intentional and spontaneous teaching on healthy food choices and the importance of physical activity.Educators will encourage children to eat the more nutritious foods provided in their lunchbox, such as sandwiches, vegetables, fruit, cheese and yoghurt, before eating any less nutritious food provided.Where children are ordering food from the school canteen, educators have customised a dedicated preschool canteen menu to ensure choices within recommended guidelines.Educators will discourage the provision of highly processed snack foods high in fat, salt and sugar and low in essential nutrients in children’s lunchboxes. Examples of these foods include lollies, chocolates, sweet biscuits, muesli bars, breakfast bars, fruit filled bars, chips, oven-baked crackers and corn chips.Educators will provide parents with feedback in regard to food in lunchboxes that does not meet the guidelines. Access to fresh drinking water:-Children must have access to fresh drinking water at all times when at preschool. This is achieved by:encouraging families to provide water bottles each day their child is at preschool refilling supplied water bottles throughout the day as required supplying cups of water for children who do not have their own water bottles.Proving a water bubbler in the outside environment. if water supply is interrupted for any reason, the preschool is to be notified immediately so water bottles can be delivered to the site. Educators will ensure drinking water is provided and available to children at all times while in attendance at preschool. Milk and water are actively encouraged as everyday beverages. We discourage the consumption of fruit juice and fruit drinks on an everyday basis.Safe food handling:-Educators must observe health and hygiene requirements in the preparation, storage, hygiene and handling of food and drinks A space must be provided for children to store their lunches out of direct sunlight. Families are encouraged to provide lunches in insulated bags to help prevent food spoilage. A fridge is available for storage of food / Educators will monitor and record fridge temperature on a daily basis. The tables that children eat at each day are cleaned daily before and after meal times. Appropriate hand washing must be undertaken prior to handling food to be consumed by children on the premises. All adults handling or preparing food must wear gloves. Staff use correct serving utensils and tongs are provided for children to use when serving themselves from a central platter. Children are discouraged from sharing food; cups, plates or utensils and staff explain to them how germs are spread. Educators are unable to heat food up using a microwave. Educators will always supervise children while eating and drinking and ensure young children do not have access to foods that may cause choking. ................
