Are You In the Top 10?

Unit: Leading a Healthy Lifestyle

Objective: To identify the top ten choices that can affect students’ lifelong health

Time: 20 minutes

Purpose: Help students recognize relationships between life expectancy and lifestyle choices and show how current lifestyle choices will enhance or endanger their health.

Supplies: Class set of index cards each labeled with a cause of death.

Steps:

1. Distribute cards, placing them face down on students’ desks.

2. Ask “What do you think are the top 10 causes of death among teens in this country?” Have students list their ideas.

3. Discuss the impact that daily lifestyle choices and behavior have on health and life expectancy.

4. Have students turn over cards and read the names of their “killers.” Point out that those that have “old age” made positive lifestyle choices; those with other causes of death represent victims of the 10 leading causes of death among teens. Ask students to read cards and list lifestyle choices that could have resulted in their death.

5. Read off Top 10 Causes of Death. Have students with killer stand. Ask students standing to identify a behavior they chose that resulted in death.

Ex. “I died in a car crash because I chose to drink and drive at age 17.”

6. Follow same procedure with each card.

Follow up: Conclude activity by asking students: “Who is in charge of your health?”Encourage making positive choices and taking positive actions.

1. Accidents = 48.5 % of deaths (4 cards)

2. Homicide = 15.2% (3 cards)

3. Suicide = 11.7% (2 cards)

4. Cancer = 5.4% (1 card)

5. Heart Disease = 3.4% (1 card)

6. Birth Defects = 1.6% (1 card)

7. Lung Disease = 0.8% (1 card)

8. Influenza/Pneumonia = 0.5% (1 card)

9. Stroke = 0.5% (1 card)

10. Non-Malignant Cancers = 0.4% (1 card)

Old Age (remaining cards)
