This week, we are going to delve deeper into our all about us unit and explore healthy habits. We are going to begin this week by looking at the circular of a grocery store and cut out the various foods. We will place the items on a chart, one side labeled “healthy,” and the other side “unhealthy.” While looking at the items, we will explore why certain foods are healthy and others are unhealthy. Healthy vs. Unhealthy food: s song: 9 Song: : Create a place mat using the My Plate template. Writing: Use crayons/pencils and paper to trace the letters in student’s name or other items around the room.Literacy/Library: Children will use pictures to create a collage of words that start with that letter .Dramatic Play: Look through the food we have in the kitchen. Sort the food by healthy vs. not healthy. Refer to our classroom chart for some help. Math: Number of the week (9). Count nine items from a bunch. Represent the number on a paper, using various arts and crafts materials.Science: Look through the store circular. Cut out all of the food to make a collage later in the week. Blocks: Measure parts of your body with blocks.TuesdayDate: 11/17Yesterday we discussed healthy vs. not healthy foods. In order to understand why some foods may not be healthy, we need to discuss the major food groups and which foods are part of each. After making a chart (my plate) as a large group, the children will make their own food group charts. What do we think are the major food groups? Food groups:: Dip leaves in paint and create a textured painting. Writing: Dip fingers in paint and trace or write letters based on skill.Literacy/Library: Children will walk around the classroom identifying objects that start with that letter.Dramatic Play: Look through the food we have in the kitchen. What is your favorite food to eat? Is it healthy or not healthy? Math: Sort animals into two categories- count the animals and then see which group has more animals than the other. Science: Use the food you cut out yesterday and sort the food into categories, such as fruit, vegetables, grains (bread), meat, and milk.Blocks: Build a classroom or house with blocks. Include all of your friends and family in the classroom.WednesdayDate: 11/18Now that we know the major food groups, we can decide what we want to put on our plates to eat. We will think about some of our favorite foods and put them in the appropriate areas in the food groups. We will also review the food groups to remind us what items belong in each area. so we can each explore who is in our families. My Plate:: Use a toothbrush and dip it in paint and use it to paint a picture. Writing: Use magnet letters to match the letters in your name or other vocabulary words. Write down the letters you find or use.Literacy/Library: Children will use pictures to create a collage of words that start with that letter.Dramatic Play: Pretend to be a dentist and take care of one of your friend’s teeth. What kind of tools do you need? Math: Use dot paint to represent the number nine. Place nine dots on the paper or trace the number nine with dots.Science: Look at the food items. Sort them to see which ones are healthy and which ones are not healthy.Blocks: Measure parts of your body with blocks.ThursdayDate: 11/19Even though we may know how to eat healthy, we need to know how to keep our teeth clean. Dental hygiene is extremely important. After reading a story about keeping our mouth/teeth clean, we will have two teeth, one labeled with a happy face and one labeled with a sad face. Using our knowledge of healthy foods, we will place the correct food one each tooth. Dental hygiene: your teeth song:: Create two teeth on a paper. Cut and glue items that are healthy to one tooth and not healthy items to the other. Writing: Use white boards and dry-erase markers to practice forming letters, shapes, and numbers.Literacy/Library: Children will use the letter book and music to review the special letter’s sound and words that begin with that puter: Play a letter identification skill game. Math: Use dot paint or markers to represent the number eight. Place eight dots on the paper or trace the number 8 with dots.Dramatic Play: Pretend to go to the store and buy some things to keep your teeth healthy. What should you buy? Make sure to get a toothbrush and toothpaste.Blocks: Build an apple orchard or pumpkin farm. Pretend to pick apples or pumpkins and then catch a turkey for Thanksgiving.FridayDate: 11/20Yesterday we spoke about keeping our teeth clean. What do we need to keep our teeth clean? Toothbrushes help us scrub and clean our teeth. Today, we will be discussing what a toothbrush is and how it helps us keep our teeth and mouths fresh and clean.
