ESCC Updates

1. Thank you to everyone who joined us at our AGM on April 28, 2014. Check our Facebook page for photo highlights of the event.

2. We invite staff and board members from all ESCC member organizations to help prioritize the ESCC’s objectives for the next four years (based on the ESCC draft 2014-2017 strategic plan). Provide your feedback at one of the ESCC strategic plan focus groups:

NEWS FOR AGENCY STAFF

1. The Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital has initiated programs focused on increasing the mobility of hospitalized older adults as a means to shorten their hospital stay and support their return home. The newly developed Functional Mobility Guideline and programs such as “moveEZ” lay the foundation for people to maintain their level of mobility upon returning to the community through regular walking, leisure and recreational programs. 2. The deadline to apply for Donner Canadian Foundation Awards for Excellence in the Delivery of Social Services is May 30. A total of $60,000 is available to non-profit agencies in seven categories, one of which is services for seniors. For more information and to apply, go here. The Donner awards are a program of The Fraser Institute, which supports “greater choice, less government intervention, and more personal responsibility.”

3. Nominations are now open for the 20th Annual Laurel Awards presented by Duncan Craig LLP. The award recognizes innovative projects or programs initiated by not-for-profit groups in Edmonton and area. Over $10,000 in cash prizes will be awarded. The deadline is June 1 and nomination forms are available online.

EVENTS FOR AGENCY STAFF

1. Volunteer Edmonton is offering three professional development opportunities in May: Volunteer Management Fundamentals on

May 6, Event Planning on May 8, and Orientation, Training and Supervision of Volunteers on May 15. Check out their website for more information on these sessions.

2. The Alberta Centre for Active Living’s 2014 Physical Activity Forum will be held May 6 in Edmonton and May 7 in Calgary. Keynote speaker John C. Spence, professor and associate dean in the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation at the University of Alberta, will address the topic Get Up, Stand Up: A Public Health Perspective on Sedentary Behaviour. 3. MyCharityConnects is offering free online workshops on a variety of topics related to fundraising. Evolution of a Planned Giving Program is presented on May 14 from 2-3 p.m. (Eastern Time) and Taking Donor Stewardship Online on May 28 from2-3 p.m. (Eastern Time). Registration is open to employees, volunteers, board members and donors of Canadian charities and non-profits.

4. Operation Friendship Seniors Society will hold a fundraising dinner and silent auction on May 26 from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Radisson Hotel Edmonton South, 4440 – Gateway Blvd. Tickets are $50 per person. Funds raised will be used for the society’s capital campaign, which is trying to raise $225,000 for four new vehicles. For more information, go here. 5. The partners involved in Age Friendly Edmonton have accomplished a lot this past year! Celebrate the work being done to build a city that values, respects and actively supports the well-being of seniors. Attend the “Let's make more Happy Birthdays” celebration and showcase on May 27 at Edmonton City Hall from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The public is welcome to attend this event. Download a poster you can use to promote this celebration and showcase.

6. Vitalize 2014 will be held in Calgary on June 5-7. Vitalize is a training and skills development conference for Alberta’s non-profit/ voluntary sector, featuring over 55 sessions on relevant topics such as developing successful social media campaigns, board development, volunteer recruitment, fundraising and leadership. Early bird registration is $150 (until April 30) and regular registration is $195. The conference supplies free transportation to Calgary on the Vitalize Hop-A-Bus!

WORK OPPORTUNITIES IN THE SENIOR-SERVING SECTOR

1. GEF Seniors Housing has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) relating to a Quality of Life Study. The RFP includes research, assessment, report, presentation and strategic planning components. The RFP focuses on the quality of life of seniors and future trends for this changing demographic. The RFP will close at noon on May 7. View the complete RFP.

2. Mill Woods Seniors Activity Centre (MWSAC) is seeking to fill a term Fundraising position. This position will be responsible for developing and managing regular giving and one-time appeals, including an annual campaign; researching and identifying potential donors; telephoning, and writing letters and proposals to potential donors; and preparing presentations to deliver to potential donors. They seek a creative and talented professional with fundraising training and experience, preferably in the not-for profit sector. 3. The Mill Woods Seniors Activity Centre (MWSAC) has an opening for a full time (30-35 hours per week) Outreach Worker to fill a maternity leave vacancy. The position is responsible for identifying isolated seniors, conducting assessments, linking seniors to resources in the community, and creating plans to meet their needs. Candidates must have a diploma or degree in Social Work, be proficient in Word and Excel, and be an independent and ethical professional. ITEMS FOR SENIORS

1. People with dementia and their care partners have a new way to learn about Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias and connect with others. The ASANT Café developed by the Alzheimer Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories officially launched April 23. This online community has discussion forums, educational programs and resources such as videos and frequently asked questions.

2. Arts Health Network Canada (AHNC) invites contributions for their Reflection Series. Each month, the AHNC website and e-newsletter feature a short article submitted by an individual reflecting on how the arts have contributed to their personal health, healing or wellbeing. The Reflection Series aims to increase Canadians' appreciation and understanding that arts engagement can contribute to individual, community and population health and wellbeing. Refer to the Call for Reflections for more information and submission guidelines.

3. The Centre for Elder Research, in partnership with CARP and Amgen Canada, is exploring how the health care system could be made easier for patients to navigate, especially when trying to access specific supports or services. Share your thoughts in their patient navigation choicebook.

4. The Retiring Minds Research Team from the University of Calgary and Alberta Health Services is conducting a project to see how much seniors know about the medical research process and to understand barriers to seniors’ participation in medical research. To participate in this confidential survey, complete the online survey, email rmsyme@ucalgary.ca for a paper copy or contact Suzanne Vorvis by phone 403-239-6065 to get a paper copy.

5. The role of optometrists is expanding to provide Albertans with improved access to essential eye care services. Optometrists will become responsible for primary eye care, which includes treating minor eye conditions. They will also be authorized to provide four new services: prescribe certain oral and topical drugs; order lab tests; order and apply ultrasound tests; and treat certain types of glaucoma. Specialists will continue to be responsible for the medical and surgical treatment of complex eye conditions. Read the Edmonton Journal story for more information.

6. As part of the Walk Edmonton project, the City of Edmonton wants your input on the best way to help people find their way around Edmonton as they walk, cycle or use transit. They want to know what helps you find your way and what information you find most useful. In particular they want to know if a system of maps, apps and signs would be a useful addition to our city streets. To learn more about this project and complete the anonymous on-line survey visit edmonton.ca/wayfinding. The survey is open from April 14 to May 4. 7. On May 3 the Calder Seniors Drop In Centre will host a Mother’s Day Tea: Silver Service. The Calder Cuties are the featured entertainment. Members $8 and non-members $12.

8. The Canadian Hard of Hearing Association – Edmonton Branch will hold a mini-conference on May 3 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Fantasyland Hotel. Registration for the Help is Hear: 2014 Hearing Loss Technology Seminar is $30 for members and $45 for non-members. The deadline to register is April 25. For more information and a registration form, go here. The conference is “open to everyone.”

9. May 4-10 is Family Caregiver Week and this year’s theme is “the Faces of Caregiving”. The Alberta Caregivers Association would like to feature a different caregiving experience each day on their social media channels. Contact Darla at dfremmerlid@ if you’re interested in sharing caregiving tips, quotes about your experience or a brief story.

10. The Alberta Caregivers Association is presenting two COMPASS for the Caregiver Workshops beginning in May. The workshop provides a safe and understanding environment to help caregivers reduce stress, decrease guilt, learn how to get the most out of the system, and begin to care for themselves. 11. The South East Edmonton Seniors Association (SEESA) Melody Singers present Showtime, their annual spring concert, at 2 p.m. on May 4. The performance will feature songs from musicals such as Singin’ in the Rain, Fiddler on the Roof, Hello Dolly and The Sound of Music. 12. The Calder Seniors Drop In Centre will host a Pancake Breakfast on May 4 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Cost for breakfast is $6 per person.

13. The Ital Canadian Senior Association invites you to their Early Mother’s Day Shopping Event Trade Fair Fundraiser. The event will be held May 4 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Ital Canadian Hall at

9111- 110 Ave. Proceeds support the Children’s Camp.

14. Enjoy Edmonton’s spectacular North Saskatchewan River Valley this spring by participating in the 50+ Bike Club. The group meets in Rundle Park every Thursday morning for 6 weeks from May 8 – June 12 at 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. All skill levels are welcome and bikes/helmets are provided. Register through the City of Edmonton by calling 311, go to edmonton.ca/ereg or visit your local City recreation facility. Cost is $85 and the course code is 513781. 15. The Westend Seniors Activity Centre is hosting a Mother’s Day Dinner on May 9 at 5 p.m. Musical entertainment is by their new band Melody Maker. Enjoy a roast beef dinner with mashed potatoes, peas, shortcake and coffee/tea. Members $12 and non-member $14.

16. South East Edmonton Seniors Association (SEESA) will hold an art show and sale on May 9 from 6 to 9 p.m. and May 10 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Demonstrations will take place both days and refreshments will be available. 17. Group ticket sales are available for the Alberta Ballet production of Class Acts: A Tribute to Hollywood Musicals presented on May 9 and 10. Groups get 25% off ticket prices when 10 or more tickets are purchased. Groups can be seated together in one location or separately throughout the theatre; however tickets are reserved and purchased through one buyer. 18. The North Edmonton Seniors Association “Fun” Cribbage Club will hold its second annual doubles tournament on May 10. The cost to enter is $30 per team (includes 10 games and lunch). Play starts at 9:30 a.m., lunch is at 11:30 a.m. and play continues at 12:30 p.m. The first 70 teams that have registered and paid will be accepted. The North Edmonton Seniors Association Choralaires present their 2014 Rags to Riches spring concert on May 10 at 2 p.m. at McClure United Church, 13708 - 74 Street. “The concert will showcase songs from Irving Berlin. 20. The Indo-Canadian Women’s Association presents Ethnic Fashions and Modern India on May 10 from 2 to 4 p.m. The event is free and includes prizes, entertainment and refreshments. RSVP by phoning 780-490-0477 or 780-934-7217.

21. Grandmothers get in free to the Edmonton premiere of Cyber-Seniors, a comedic documentary about the extraordinary journey of several seniors as they discover the magic of the world-wide-web through the guidance of teenaged mentors. This heartwarming and humorous film will be screened as part of the Global Visions Film Festival on Mother’s Day, May 11 at noon at the Metro Cinema, 8712 109th Street, Edmonton. Tickets are available at the door, and festival passes can be purchased in advance.

22. The St. Albert National Aboriginal Day Committee will host a Senior’s Opry on May 16 at 2 and 7 p.m. at Servus Place, #400 Campbell Road. The event will include music by Country Swing, whose members are Calvin Vollrath, Alfie Myhre, Ray St. Germain, Richard Chernesky, Darryl Campbell, Ozzie Danyluk and Les Vincent. Tickets are $10. 23. Rick Lauber, author of Caregiver’s Guide for Canadians and the Caregiver’s Blog, will be signing books at Chapters Strathcona

(10504 - 82 Ave) on May 17 from 12 to 4 p.m. Rick will also share stories and answer questions about caregiving.

24. The Westend Seniors Activity Centre presents their 11th annual Night of Music May 23 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 (which includes coffee and snacks). The evening features the Westend Seniors Singers.

25. The South East Edmonton Seniors Association (SEESA) Accidental Drama Club’s annual variety show fundraiser, Rise Up Singing, will be held on May 23 at 7 p.m., 24 at 5:30 p.m. and 25 at 11 a.m. The Friday performance is auditorium seating. Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door. The Saturday event includes a dinner of herbed chicken, scalloped potatoes and “all the fixings,” and the Sunday show includes brunch. Tickets to these performances are $20 each and seating is assigned. Tickets go on sale on April 23. The deadline to purchase them for the dinner or brunch show is May 19. The 18th annual Older, Bolder, Better!™: Rethink Aging event runs June 2 between 9 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. The event features an exhibition and trade show, mature worker pavilion and training, entertainment, artisan demos and gallery, free buffalo burger barbecue, book and bake sale and much more. This year, Westend Seniors Activity Centre has been selected as the provincial launch site for Seniors Week.

28. Minerva Senior Studies Institute offers a free presentation of Living Life to the Fullest by Dr. Jane Simington from 1 to 3 p.m. on June 19 at MacEwan University’s City Centre Campus, located at 10700 – 104 Avenue, Edmonton. VOLUNTEER/WORK OPPORTUNITIES FOR SENIORS

1. The City of Edmonton Reuse Centre is looking for volunteers to share their skills to lead craft workshops or conduct facility tours. For more information, go here or call Hayley at 780-495-9851.

2. Telus World of Science could use your help. For a list of volunteer positions, go here. Looking ahead, the position of school program host weekdays from September to June “appeals to our more mature volunteers.” It’s therefore not too early to get in line for 2014-15. For more information on fall and winter volunteer openings, go here.

3. Global Visions Festival needs volunteers to work shifts at Metro Cinema, the Art Gallery of Alberta and the Royal Alberta Museum. “We need people for box-office, front of house, ticket-taking, signing up people to our newsletter, gathering voting ballots for audience awards, and much, much more!” If interested, email GVFvolunteers@ indicating time of day preferred, days available, and preferred venue. The festival takes place May 8 to 15.
