School of Medicine Faculty: Vacation and Personal Absences

School of Medicine faculty members do not have a defined work week. Individual departments will

provide information concerning faculty vacation and leave policies specific to the department. The policy

in the faculty member¡¯s primary department will apply.

1. There is a four-week maximum (twenty weekdays plus any contiguous weekend days) of

vacation and personal days off allotted per academic year, prorated on basis of appointment for

effort levels less than 100%. Departments will define allowable vacation in ¡°letters of offer¡± or

will reference/provide the relevant departmental policies.

2. There is no accrual or carry forward of vacation time.

3. Unused vacation/personal days are not reimbursable.

4. Vacation/personal days should not have a negative impact on the faculty member¡¯s ability to

fulfill responsibilities (individual and organizational) and coverage must be arranged as

necessary. Prior approval/advance notice requirements are as defined by each department¡¯s

policy, and must be consistent with VUMC and VMG policies.

5. Days away when traveling to fulfill Vanderbilt associated duties are subject to departmental

policies and/or Chair approval.

6. Faculty members do not receive paid holidays.

7. Faculty members do not earn or report sick time but are required to complete FMLA paperwork.
