Compass: God In The Lodge: Part 1

Sunday, 4 May 2014

The faith, beliefs and values of Australia's prime ministers from Barton to Abbott - from Federation to now. What did they believe? And, what

impact did their religious beliefs have on their personal and political lives?

For the first time on television GOD IN THE LODGE examines an aspect of Australian politics often overlooked: the religious beliefs that have

shaped and driven our prime ministers from 1901 to now.

Most of Australia's leaders since Federation have believed in God.

Some were serious Christians. Only a few have been indifferent. But in our increasingly secular age it's an area of political life rarely

explored, even though in recent years our prime ministers’ religious beliefs have become more public.

In 2007 Kevin Rudd became our most overtly Christian prime minister, while our newest PM, Tony Abbott, studied for the priesthood before

entering politics, and is Australia's first Catholic from the Liberal Party to lead the country. God In The Lodge reveals how right from the

start, religion - Christianity in particular - has played a role in federal politics.

The Bible was at the centre of proclamations declaring Federation. Our first prime minister, Edmund Barton, although Church of England, sought

an audience with the Pope in 1902, a visit that outraged Australia's majority Protestant population back home. And, his successor Alfred Deakin

was one of Australia's most intensely religious prime ministers. Although raised Church of England, Deakin also dabbled with Theosophy, The

Salvation Army and Spiritualism.

Over subsequent decades religion played a key role in Australia's WW1 conscription debates, and was pivotal in the 1950s Labor Party split.

More recently Christian voters have played an influential role in election campaigns and outcomes.

Extensively researched and illustrated, with rarely seen archival footage of Australia's early prime ministers, God In The Lodge features a

wide cross section of prime ministerial biographers and historians - Roy Williams, David Day, Blanche d'Alpuget, Marion Maddox, John Warhurst,

Gerard and Anne Henderson, Margaret Simons and Stuart McIntyre.

Restoration Home: Nebo Chapel

Sunday, 4 May 2014

Hayley and Alan are not your typical restoration heroes. Struggling to find a decent sized family home, they decided to put in a bid for a

Victorian chapel in the Welsh valleys. It was derelict and in need of a saviour - they bought the lot for just £25,000. With only £20,000 of

their own money left to restore the chapel, they began a struggle of almost impossible scale. They start in the vestry at the rear, which they

hope to transform into a spacious three bedroom modern home - the plan was to then get a mortgage to complete the whole chapel, but the

enormity of the task and the consequence of their tiny budget soon hits home.

As Alan and Hayley struggle to save the centre piece of the village, the historical investigation gains pace. A story unfolds charting the

rise and importance of chapels such as Nebo and how a revolutionary act passed in the 17th century would fundamentally change the fortunes of

its worshippers. But will Alan and Hayley get far enough in the restoration to secure the funds to make it a family home, or will they have

wasted every last penny of their savings trying?

Inspector George Gently: Gently Between The Lines

Sunday, 4 May 2014 New Series

It's 1969 and Inspector George Gently (Martin Shaw) and Sergeant John Bacchus (Lee Ingleby) are both suffering from their own physical and

mental scars several months after the horrific shootings that nearly claimed their lives in Durham Cathedral. The classic series Inspector

George Gently returns in a brand new series.

In, 'Gently Between the Lines' by Tim Prager, Gently is shocked to receive Bacchus's resignation, but he soon realises that his sergeant has

lost his confidence.

Setting about to fix Bacchus, Gently insists that whilst he serves out his notice, he needs him to help investigate a death in custody. The

Newcastle police have arrested rioters as they tried to clear a slum due for demolition.

The next morning one of the protesters is discovered dead in the cells by WPC Rachel Coles (Lisa McGrills - Hebburn, The Pitman Painters). This

will turn into a case that will have both Gently and Bacchus questioning what it means to be a police officer at a time when attitudes to the

police are changing.

and Aunty Grace take him back to Sydney, Australia, to start a new life at a Catholic high school.

Six weeks later and Jonah is the leader of his new Year 9 gang ‘Fobba-liscious’ who defend their turf against their enemies ‘The Rangas’ and

Jonah’s arch nemesis Graydon, the school captain. The boys attend Lazarus House for learning difficulty students run by Mr Joseph, a vocational

based program where he uses violence and unorthodox methods to control the class. Jonah and ‘Fobba-liscious’ allegedly dominate the school as

they partake in break dancing, graffiti and flirting with teachers. After school Jonah reveals he’s been in trouble with the law and loiters

with local Polynesian gang ‘The Soldierz’. But at home, despite the loss of his mother at a young age, Jonah’s supportive family believe his

future looks bright

The Agony Of Modern Manners: Weddings & Funerals

Wednesday, 7 May 2014 Final

"To be the best guest - don't be a dick." Ronny Chieng

"Funeral sex is some of the best sex ever." Lawrence Mooney

Weddings first. Who do you invite? How do you be a good Best Man and Maid of Honour? Is it about organising an unforgettable bucks/hens night

or delivering them to the church alive and on time? Comparatively, the guests have it easy, so it's funny that so many get it wrong. What are

the rules with RSVPing?

Is it permissible to forgo the ceremony and just turn up to the reception? Then there are vows - should the bride and groom be traditional or

write their own? And if they do write their own, how can they ensure the vows are good? Then there is that other significant ceremonial event -

the funeral. What do you say to the person who is grieving? And what about the eulogy? Can you offer an honest appraisal of his or her life, or

does the deceased have to be canonised?

Call The Midwife

Thursday, 8 May 2014

Sister Julienne (Jenny Agutter) receives a phone call from Holloway Prison where the Salvation Army, who normally provides midwifery for female

inmates, have been struck down with influenza. She is called to care for the women and asks Trixie (Helen George) to help her.

After being frisked down, Trixie and Sister Julienne enter the harsh realities of the women's prison. After seeing the neglected state of the

patients, they insist on daily visits. They meet Miss Stella Crangle (Lacey Turner) who's due to give birth any day - Trixie insists that she

get nothing but bed rest. The following day, they are dismayed to find Stella not only still on work duties but also fighting with another

inmate. With no family, no home, and a fiancé who can't be contacted Stella confides to Sister Julienne that she is concerned that the prison

board will take away her baby.

Nurse Jenny (Jessica Raine) tends to expectant mother Mrs Baker (Hannah Teinten), who is battling body image issues. Newly married, she is

concerned about the changes to her body and that her husband will no longer find her attractive.

Shelagh (Laura Main) suffers heartbreak when a routine pregnancy check turns out to be something far more serious. Meanwhile the girls plan

for Chummy's (Miranda Hart) birthday, unsure of what to get her.

Much to the girls’ delight, Fred (Cliff Parisi) comes to the rescue with tickets to see My Fair Lady.

Births, Deaths And Marriages

Thursday, 8 May 2014

In Marylebone Town Hall, one of Britain's busiest and most iconic registry offices, a team of 21 registrars and a superintendent handle up to

30 birth and death registrations and conduct up to 14 marriage ceremonies per day.

These are the human stories of the people who pass through Marylebone's doors to record the start of a new life or the end of one, a marriage

ceremony or a citizenship one. During the series the registrars deal with a range of births, from the very significant arrival of the royal

baby Prince George to the rather unexpected delivery of a baby in the back of a car. There are heartbreaking farewells as a daughter tells of

her late mum's quest to be reunited with the son she had to give up for adoption more than fifty years ago and a council official does some

detective work after a man dies alone. And the many wonderful and unique marriages range from an impromptu wedding with a bride wearing a black

T-shirt to a last-minute cancellation.

In this opening episode the Marylebone team must contend with a significant new arrival in the Borough of Westminster: the royal baby Prince

George. Meanwhile, a desperate hunt for people to serve as witnesses at a wedding leads to a very unusual bridal party. Also, there are some

heartbreaking farewells.

Jonathan Creek: The Sinner & The Sandman

Friday, 9 May 2014

As Jonathan and Polly struggle to settle into rural life, they find their apparently serene country village is riddled with all manner of

strange and disturbing undercurrents.

Trouble is already brewing in the nearby community centre - recently reopened after a major facelift - where a sordid sex scandal is about to

break, casting a pall of gloom over the celebrations. And at the vicarage, the arrival of a new baby is overshadowed by tales of a strange

hump-backed beast that has been seen prowling in the garden by night and foraging through the rubbish bags for foodstuffs.

Even the Creek residence is struck by misfortune, as the prospect of a plague of deadly Japanese knotweed threatens to trigger wide-scale panic

throughout the village. And after a whole slew of other unfortunate events, there are fears that some strange parochial apocalypse is about to

dawn.

Jonathan Creek, meanwhile, finds himself paying a charitable call on the eccentric Mr Eric Ipswich - AKA 'The Amazing Astrodamus' - an ancient

and reclusive former psychic magician who will shortly bring the village to a standstill by pulling off the most baffling act of clairvoyance

in history.

And what is behind the macabre recurring dream that continues to haunt Creek's wife Polly, in which the kindly children's nursery character the

Sandman is transformed into a dark and chilling figure of evil?
