The Dalton Education Foundation Scholarship ApplicationThe scholarships listed below are offered through the Dalton Education Foundation. A Scholarship Committee, made up of faculty representatives from each department, has the pleasure each year of deciding who among our seniors will receive these scholarships. The committee will review academic information of the applicants. In addition, the committee would like some information about you which may not show up on your transcript. Starr Memorial Scholarship: ($1,200) The creators of this scholarship specified that it should be given to the DHS senior who best reflects the qualities that Harlan Starr exhibited during his life: does one’s best in all that one attempts, including academics; serves as a role model for others by showing respect to all and giving others a second changes; perseveres in what one attempts to do; gives back to the community; and is ethical, fair and dedicated. To be compared to this outstanding gentleman is quite a compliment to you!James E. Martin Memorial Math Award: ($2,000) This scholarship is designated for a Dalton High School graduating senior who has excelled in the study of mathematics. The late James E. Martin was a mathematics teachers at DHS from 1950 until 1986. During his time there, he was names STAR Teacher multiple times and served as a chairman of the mathematics department. Criteria include academic performance and abilities, college entrance test scores, the level of mathematics courses taken and intent to attend a college or university. The John Bruner Memorial Scholarship: ($500): The creators of this scholarship specify that this award is given to the graduating senior who as a DHS cross-country or track athlete best exemplified John Bruner’s character: goodness, courage, did his best, smiled, relaxed fun spirit, willingness to please, joy to be with, charming, mature, kind, caring, served others, compassionate, appreciated diversity, sensitive to others, inclusive of all, persistent in the face of adversity, studied and maintained his grades in spite of learning difficulties, valued education, and aspired to attend college and earned a scholarship. In running John was complete. He respected his coaches and supported his teammates. He learned that hard work gets rewarded. His senior year, John was the captain of the DHS Cross Country team. With John’s leadership and dedication to his teams’ success, they won the regions 7AAAA championship. John was humbled by his success in sports and loved life to the end.” Greg and Margie BrunerDale Cook Memorial Scholarship: ($250) Dale Gibson Cook, a DHS media specialist for many years touched many lives through her selfless spirit, positive outlook, and genuine respect for others. This award is given to the DHS senior who best exemplifies the qualities that Dale Cook lived. A plaque with the winner’s name is also added to a trophy on display in the DHS Media Center.Wright Business Leader of Tomorrow Scholarship: ($1,100) This scholarship is awarded to a senior who plans to major in business. This award is given by Lamar and Ann Wright in honor of their sons, Kevin and Bucky Wright.Dr. Jim and Nancy Hawkins Education Scholarship: ($1,000) This Scholarship will go to a student who has an interest in a career in education.Foundation Scholarships with Separate ApplicationsThe Demera Keith Robinson Memorial Scholarship: ($1,000) Demera Keith Robinson was an English teacher at her alma mater, Dalton High School. DHS English teachers will select the recipient. The Willisa H. Marsh Future Educator’s Scholarship: ($1,000) Willisa was a graduate of the class of 1996 with twelve years of perfect attendance. She went on to Berry College and became a teacher in Whitfield County. The family will select the recipient. This scholarship was established in her memory by friends and family. The scholarship, in the amount of $1000, is to be awarded to one recipient.The applicant must be a Dalton High School graduate and maintain a GPA of no less than a 3.5 in their English classes. Additionally, the applicants will write an essay based on the quote below. "She's a dreamer, a doer, a thinker. She sees possibilities everywhere." - author unknown The Dalton High English teachers will make the final selection for the scholarship(s) based on the essays.
