Middletown High School

Introductions/Opening Remarks: President, Bob Sinagra, welcomed everyone to the December Booster Club meeting. The meeting was held in the small gym, and discussion with Mike Pitruzello regarding general concession operations preceded the official opening. The concession stand must remain locked. The Booster Club does not receive our own key. Therefore, we must locate a custodian to open it on game nights. We will purchase a safe to keep inside. There was some discussion about obtaining a walkie-talkie to contact the custodian. There will be no food or drink allowed in the gym.

Bob commented that the Fall Banquet went very well. 550 people attended. Overall comments for next time were that we need to move the serving line along more quickly; it tended to bottleneck and some people did not get to eat. The winter sports season opened tonight, with Girls Basketball playing at Bunnell. To save some time, introductions were skipped.

Those present were: Kathi Wickham, Janice Spada, Eric Marszalek, Linda Bartolotta, Sharon Riley, Kathi Linares, Halina Adamiak, Karen O’Leary, Kathleen Srubas, David Strohm, Jason Serra, Tess Dagenais, Pat Meskill, Dale Aldieri, Jim Condon, John P. Greco, Rene’ Grant, Alice Fugger, Susan Dunn, Mike Pellegrini, Tracey Stanley, Sue Sinagra, Bob Sinagra, Kim Shepard, Donna Marino, Laura Gambino.

Secretary’s Report: Kathi Wickham – Correction of BIAC to CIAC in the November minutes was noted. A motion was made to accept the secretary’s report; it was seconded and it was unanimously approved.

Treasurer’s Report: Sue Sinagra - The treasurer’s report for November was distributed. No changes were requested. A motion was made to accept the secretary’s report; it was seconded and unanimously approved.

Banquets & Awards: Donna Marino - Banquet was lovely. Leftover food was donated to St. Vincent DePaul’s. There was a suggestion to have meatless sauce in the future. Question asked about which sports attend. Bob will ask Mike P.

Booster Club passes can be used for Middletown home games, regular season only, not for tournaments or state games.

Thanksgiving Day game – Laura and Joe Gambino did a great job with everything. Concessions ran very smoothly. We received a big thank you from the band for the hot chocolate. The band wanted to sit in the bleachers, so chairs were not set up.

Friends of:

Baseball: David Strohm – no report

Boys Basketball: Tracey Stanley – We won the championship in the Meriden Fall League and are off to a good start selling our seat cushions.  We are also accepting ads for our basketball journal. Boys and Girls Basketball coach vs. team games will be played at the 1/29 and 1/30 scheduled games to raise money for cancer research. Wrist bands will also be sold at those games.

Girls Basketball: Victoria Wright-Mayo – no report

Fall Cheerleading: – no report

.

Winter Cheerleading: – no report

Crew: Karen Bixby/Cheryl Murdock – We had a successful bake sale at Wal-Mart in early Nov., raising about $550.00 We are  selling hot chocolate and coffee in front of the Chamber of Commerce for the kick off of Holiday on Main Street, Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving.  This was a nice event for us to be involved in last year.  We show support for a community event and we get to raise a little money, too. Also, we will be having a bake sale, again at Wal-Mart, on Sunday December 7th (not the 6th since it will conflict with proj. grad.) Lastly, we are in the middle of winter training and many of the crew kids that are not doing a winter sport are participating - keeping up with their fitness and improving conditioning for the spring.  They are doing a great job; a very dedicated bunch!

Boys Cross Country: Alice Fugger – no report

Girls Cross Country: Susan Dunn – Claire Dunn and Lauren Medieros competed in the Footlocker Northeast Region Championships.   The race was held on Saturday, November 29, 2008 at the famous Van Cortlandt Park, Bronx New York.  The girls have been training for the past two weeks under the guidance of Coach Jen Price.   Claire finished 13th in the Senior Girls race with a time of 20:57.  Lauren ran in the sophomore girl’s race coming in 55th with a time of 22:51.  The runners came from the New England and Mid Atlantic States.  Top runners in the Championship race go on to compete in Nationals.

Dance Team: Janice Spada / Karen O’Leary – no report

Football: Dawn Quintiliano – no report

Frisbee: Kathi Linares – The Frisbee-Illiano’s Day/Night is Monday, January 19th  (Martin Luther King Day) and will be all day.  10% of the daily sales will be donated.  This is for dine-in or take out at the South Main Street location.

Golf: Kathi Srubas – no report

Boys Soccer: Dale Aldieri – no report

Girls Soccer: Tess Dagenais – The Varsity Girl's Soccer team qualified for the state tournament, but lost in the first round to Fairfield Ward.  The team had their last bake sale of the season on Saturday, Nov 22.  It was the coldest day of the season, but we braved the weather and raised just over $600.00.  The Girls' and Boys' Soccer Team have decided to work together on a Pasta Supper in the late winter, early spring, between sport seasons.  It will be held off-site so as to draw in outsiders.

Softball: Karen Mosca – Girls Softball held a walkathon in November.  Nine girls walked 10 miles and raised a combined total of $710. They did a great job. The team will not be going to Florida next year during the spring recess as a majority of the girls are unable or unwilling to participate in the trip.

Boys Swimming: Pat Meskill – Friends of Boys Swimming just finished a successful Lyman's pie fundraiser. On December 18th the Girls & Boys swim team had their annual combined Potluck Dinner, celebrating the girls’ successful season and kicking off the Boys season. First day of boys swim practice is Dec. 1 in our new pool! Everyone is very excited. We will be starting our Swimathon AD Book Fundraiser soon.

Girls Swimming: Heidi Foster-Cho – Our season ended this month with the State Trials and Finals.  Thanks to our great parent support this year and we were able to raise about $500 more than last year.

Boys Tennis: – no report

Girls Tennis: Brenda Michanczyk – Nothing to report this month.

Boys Indoor Track: Halina Adamiak – no report

Girls Indoor Track: – no report

Boys Outdoor Track: Corrine Sternberg – no report

Girls Outdoor Track: Rene Grant – Nothing to report this month.

Volleyball: Linda Bartolotta – The team received their sweatshirts at the banquet last week.  Danya Gomez was voted to the NWC All Conference team.  Marchella Vinci and Amanda Marino were named captains for next year.  I have recruited Laura Harwood to take my place as "Heads of Volleyball" for next year.

Wrestling:  Dawn Quintiliano – no report

Old Business:

Scrips – The company is reputable. Tess has checked with the company to make sure all cards are available (not going bankrupt). Order deadline was extended to 12/9. There was discussion whether we could buy Sam’s cards to use for concession purchases; need to confirm tax exempt status will work with gift cards.

Website – Ken Brostek will continue to run the site until it is determined how/when to turn it over to the school to run. Bob suggested that all new ad purchases be split with Ken until then, as Ken has been running it for free. With the future of the Middletown Press in question, how else will residents learn of sporting news/events? Individual sport sponsors pay for that sport’s page for a whole year. Bob will check on the annual fee.

Thanksgiving Day football game – We were not allowed to count the money before turning it over to Xavier (per agreement). How do we know there is an even split? Earlier in the year there had been an executive committee meeting between the MHS and Xavier. Bob had proposed (to Mike) that we

purchase a counting machine. At this executive meeting with both schools, Mike was told that MHS purchases all materials, does all setup and breakdown, and on game day some volunteers from Xavier will show up to work. We need to have an accounting of the receipts, payments and the split. We also need to review the contract/relationship between the two schools.

New Business:

Booster Club shirts – There are some left. They will be kept and sold at the concession stand. There was discussion about having ID buttons for those who volunteer at events.

Outside Concession Stand – People will enter the stadium and proceed right past the concession stand. The window is on the west end; view of the locker rooms. A stove was purchased: gas burners, stainless steel, with $1,100 discount.

Letterhead – Bob and Ken developed MHS Booster Club letterhead for written correspondence. Bob will email to secretary to send to Heads of.

Meet the Coaches Night – It was suggested that Heads of attend this event to recruit parents for their Friends of groups.

Banners/flag – We need to have nicer banners in the gym than paper ones. A flag like the band carries would be good to have at the front of the school.

Norma Wright has formally resigned as Head of Boys Tennis. At this point there is no replacement.

Next Meeting: The next meeting will be Wednesday, January 7, 2009 @ 7:00pm. in the lecture hall.

A motion was made and seconded to adjourn the meeting. It was unanimously approved.

Respectfully Submitted,

Kathi Wickham, Secretary
