This class covers topics such as matter, chemical reactions, solutions, and nuclear chemistry. Such course should contribute to students’ abilities to think critically, analyze and interpret scientific data, and reason logically about abstract concepts. Academic DishonestyOtherwise known as cheating, academic dishonesty undermines the cheater, school’s philosophy and class morale. All universities severely punish students for academic dishonesty, even for first-time offenders. This may result in life-altering consequences and can disqualify one’s ability to continue higher education. Therefore, to appreciate the importance contained in such ethical code, the instructor of this course will use the full extent of possible consequences and advocate for one’s removal from the course if caught cheating.Expectations Respect yourself, your peers, your teacher, and your surroundingsRaise your hand and wait for permission to speakBe seated and ready to work when class startsThe bell does not dismiss you, the teacher doesElectronic devices should be put away in a designated location, unless I require it. Excessive unexcused tardies will results in disciplinary action. AttendanceDue to our block schedule, an absence to a class is equivalent to two absences. An absent student is responsible to obtain the information/topic covered during their absence. An absent student will be held responsible for getting all make-up work. Being absent from class may hinder a student’s academic progress. If possible, don’t miss class at all. Students missing class for extracurricular activities are not exempt from assigned work deadlines. An absent student participating in an extracurricular activity is responsible for any assigned material and must request make-up work/test upon returning to class. As stated in the Parent Handbook: “Teachers are required to provide students with make-up assignments once the absence has been excused; however, it is the responsibility of the student to request the assignments from the teacher(s).” If a student has 3 or more absences, the student will be referred to their respective counselor. If the student has 5 or more absences, the student will be referred to an administrator. Absences & Late WorkNo late work or make-up will be accepted, unless you have an excused absence. Students who are absent for an excused reason will be responsible for collecting missed work and turning it in by the following class period. This only applies to homework/classwork assigned on the day the student was absent, but not to long-term projects, lab write-up/notebooks, or assignments known in advanced. Long-term projects, lab write up/notebook, and lab reports will be due on the date discussed. Failure to make up an assignment after 1 week upon the student’s return will result in a zero. Once I return papers, make ups are no longer allowed for that specific quiz or test.Students are responsible for asking the teacher for missed assignments and planning for make-up quizzes or exams. There is ABSOLUTELY no make up work for lockouts, so be on time to class! For long-term absences (more than 2 days), please contact the teacher immediately so arrangements can be made for missed assignments, lab work, and/or exams. Textbook Learning AssignmentsHomework such as readings, independent study, and general assignments will be given regularly. If you have an excused absence, it is your responsibility to ask for the missed assignments. You will have until the following class to turn in the work. Late work will not be accepted and will result in a zero in the gradebook. Be responsible and active towards class work. Come prepared and ready to learn. Ask for help when needed. Remember: My goal is to make you a successful student in science!WORK THE PROBLEMS: Chemistry takes a lot of practice. Therefore, work as many problems as you can in an actively manner. By this I mean doing it yourself and understanding the process. DO NOT MISS CLASS: Regular attendance is a must in your road to success. Use class time effectively by coming to class prepared and ready to work.STUDY EFFECTIVELY FOR TESTS: Do not cram!!! Do not try to study for a Chemistry test the night before. It will not work. Chemistry takes a lot of practice and mastery can only be gained by building your understanding. Do the homework and understand the concepts as they are covered in class. Ask for help if you do not understand something. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A DUMB QUESTION: If you do not understand a concept, ask the teacher or classmates for clarification. We are all here to learn, and the best way to do it is by asking questions. I encourage you to be active and ask lots of questions.PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!!!2020– 2021 Chemistry SyllabusPlease sign and return ONLY this page to Mr. SarmientoIn order to complete the Syllabus assignment, PARENTS please send me an e-mail to csarmiento@In the SUBJECT of the e-mail please type in order:PERIOD NUMBER, STUDENT’S FIRST AND LAST NAME THIS WILL BE GRADED AS YOUR FIRST HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT!
