Geometry (Honors)

Course Syllabus

Text: Geometry. Holt, 2003. Your textbook must be covered.

Goals: 1. The student will review all the preliminary mathematical skills that are necessary precursors to the study of geometry. He/she will use formal reasoning to justify conclusions about geometry and its relationship to other areas of mathematics. He/she will recognize the logical structure of the system of geometric axioms, become proficient in proving theorems, and use axioms and theorems to verify his/her conjectures. The course will include open-ended response assessments with an emphasis on critical thinking in preparation for the MCAS exam administered in sophomore year. For detailed topics see Content section below.

2. The student will be taught to read a math text so that throughout high school and in college he/she can use a textbook as an aid in learning complex mathematical concepts. Students will focus on reading and communicating orally, reading silently, using symbols, using mathematical words, reading diagrams, reading charts, and reading figures.

Class notes are based on examples from the textbook.

These textbook examples act as notes for the class for

students who are absent or who need copies of notes for

504 accomodations/IEP’s.

3. The student will learn to think in an ordered fashion and learn the strategies involved

in solving problems in a step-by-step manner.

Course Expectations:

• Be an invested active learner

• Take responsibility for your successes and setbacks

• Be prepared

• Show respect for others and yourself

District / WHS Expectations:

The WHS graduate will effectively:

• Communicate through written and oral communication

• Employ strategic reading strategies

• Use technology

• Collaborate

• Research

• Solve problems

Requirements:

1. Active participation in class; including class assignments, note taking, and discussion. Written assignments may be collected and graded for proper grammar and spelling as well as mathematical content. Students will be expected to speak and write in complete sentences. Students will have their textbook, notebook (3 ring binder preferred), folder (for worksheets, etc.), student planner, and pencil (preferred) or pen (blue or black ink only) in each class session.

Proper use of scientific and/or graphing calculator is also a requirement for this class.

(The memory on all calculators must be cleared at the beginning and end of each class.)

2. Completion of all homework assignments on time and in the specified manner, i.e. neatly in the notebook. Homework missed due to absence must be made up within one week in order to receive credit (All homework assignments must contain the original problem from the text and work must be shown to receive full credit.)

3. Completion of all quizzes, tests, exams, and projects. (Make-ups due to absence must be completed within a week of the original test/quiz date.) Only students with an IEP or 504 will be given extended time for tests/quizzes. The test/ quiz must be completed on that day after school with the extension equivalent to half a class period ( 24 minutes.

4. All policies found in the Weymouth H.S. Student Handbook will be enforced.

Shapes in Space A Closer Look at Proof & Logic

Marking Policy:

1. The semester and final grade will be determined as per school policy by computing the average of term grades and semester exams. (Terms are 20% each of the final grade. Exams are 10% each of the final grade.)

2. The term grades for this course will be determined as follows:

homework 20%

class participation 10% (Includes notebook and folder grade.)

quizzes 30%

tests 40%

*Excessive absence may result in course failure (as per school policy).

Extra Help and Extra Credit:

1. Extra help is available most days immediately after school hours or in the morning before school by arrangement with the instructor. Students should make appointments at least 24 hours in advance.

2. Extra credit is not available for this honors level course

Student-Parent Course Agreement:

Please complete the agreement on the next page with your parent or guardian.

Student-Parent Course Agreement: detach and return to course instructor.

21st Century Skills Common rubrics

Weymouth High School is deeply committed to equipping all students with the skills necessary to find success in our 21st century world. By focusing on these core skills, our students become not just masters of content but masters with content. These core skills include strategic reading, written communication, research, problem solving, technology, collaboration, and oral communication. To create a common language for the instruction of these skills and to standardize their assessment, our teachers utilize school-wide rubrics for the assessment of each of the core skills. This use of school-wide rubrics also allows Weymouth High school to meet important accreditation standards for the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and to better align our curriculum with the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Schools.
