Local school board member earns prestigious statewide honor

COLUMBUS — Donna J. Myers, a board member at Northwestern Local Schools in Clark County and the Springfield-Clark Career Technology Center, is among five public school board members named to the Ohio School Boards Association’s (OSBA) 2011 All-Ohio School Board. The board members will be recognized with the association’s most prestigious honor on Nov. 16 during the 56th annual OSBA Capital Conference and Trade Show in Columbus.

The other honorees and the districts they serve are: Walter S. Armes, Whitehall City Schools; John L. Boyer, Waverly City Schools; Roger L. Samuelson, Champion Local Schools (Trumbull County) and Trumbull Career & Technical Center; and David Spridgeon, Arcadia Local Schools (Hancock County).

OSBA Executive Director Richard Lewis will recognize the All-Ohio School Board members on the final day of the Capital Conference, a four-day convention attended by more than 10,000 Ohio school board members, superintendents, treasurers, business officials and other school leaders.

Every year, OSBA names one board of education member from each of its five regions — Central, Northeast, Northwest, Southeast and Southwest — to the All-Ohio School Board. The award recognizes outstanding service to public education and represents the dedication shown by thousands of board members across the state.

All-Ohio School Board candidates are nominated by their respective school boards; OSBA regional committees then select the five winners.

Myers, who has been a Northwestern Local school board member for 14 years and is in her 10th year on the career technology center board, represents OSBA’s Southwest Region. She has served as board president or vice president for eight years.

The veteran board member is extremely devoted to both of her school districts. She supports all booster groups at Northwestern Local and serves as the district’s legislative liaison to OSBA. At the career technology center, she served during Ohio Graduation Test Crunch Night and on the High Schools that Work Committee, among others.

Myers is deeply committed to OSBA, where she serves as an Ambassador for Education and on the Executive Committee, Board of Trustees, Federal Relations Network and Southwest Region Executive Committee. She also is Southwest Region immediate past president. Her commitment to professional development and volunteerism has earned her multiple OSBA Awards of Achievement and National School Boards Association School Board Member National Recognition Program awards. She also has earned OSBA Master Board Member status, a lifetime distinction.

Myers’ dedication to her community is reflected in her service to the Clark County 4-H program; North Hampton Lions Club; and the American Cancer Society Relay for Life Team. In addition to OSBA and NSBA, her professional affiliations include the national Association for Career and Technical Education and the Ohio Association for Career and Technical Education.

In nominating Myers, her board colleagues wrote: “Her greatest attribute is her dedication to the students, staff and community. Donna is a tireless worker for the students of Northwestern and Springfield-Clark CTC, as well as the students of Ohio through her work with OSBA.”

The retired registered nurse lives near Springfield and has two children.

OSBA leads the way to educational excellence by serving Ohio’s public school board members and the diverse districts they represent through superior service and creative solutions.
