Rob Carrick's comments: Fairly priced for a dividend ETF ? many others on this list are pushing it with their fees. Stocks in the portfolio were screened using factors designed to find well-rounded dividend payers ? three-year dividend growth, yield and payout ratio, which is the percentage of a company's earnings that is paid out in dividends to shareholders.

CI WisdomTree Canada Quality Dividend Growth Index ETF

DGRC 191 0.24 0.04 32.18 2.7

Quarterly 50 Industrials 26 Financials 18 Cons. discr. 13

The original plan was to highlight the CI First Asset Morningstar Canada Dividend Target 30 Index ETF (DXM), which has produced outstanding returns lately. However, DXM is tiny and thus will be merged with DGRC in mid-April. DGRC, which targets dividend-payers with growth characteristics, has produced competitive returns in the past three years.

A buy-low candidate? While it's back of the pack in performance over the past 12 months, this ETF has delivered strong long-term results despite a fee on the high side. Also has a history of being less volatile than many competitors.

More than half the fund is in financials, so overall returns will very much depend on that sector doing well. Tracks the Nasdaq Select Canadian Dividend Index, which screens for high-yielding stocks with a history of growing dividends.

This ETF is built on an index of stocks that have increased dividends every year for at least five straight years. Returns have been strong, especially in the near term, and exposure to financials is moderate. But the cost is representative of how dividend ETFs can get away with charging more than comparable Canadian equity ETFs.

29 Financials 54 Utilities 12 Telecom 11

Cheaper and less volatile than CDZ, and the dividend yield is markedly higher. CDZ has outperformed recently, but five-year numbers highlight how XDV has had its moments.

75 Financials 30 Energy 29 Telecom 13

45.6 8.1 8.4 1.18

Income seekers, take a look. Bargain-priced XEI's dividend yield is among the highest on this list and worlds better than the 1 per cent yield on five-year Government of Canada bonds. Best not to consider this as a conservative dividend fund, though. Volatility is on the high side.

RBC Quant Canadian Dividend Leaders ETF

75 Financials 30 Energy 13 Tech 12

40.5 7.7 7.6 0.93 01-15-2014

What makes this fund different is the fact that tech appears in its Top 3 sectors. And the fund's largest holding? As of March 31 it's a 9.1-per-cent position in Constellation Software, which has a dividend yield of just 0.3 per cent but incredible returns in recent years. Overall fund results have not been exceptional, though.

A comparatively low fee, strong yield and competitive returns. What's not to like? Only the high weighting in financials, which may be too much of a good thing for investors holding lots of bank stocks already.
