Atom Books are offering schools, librarians and reading groups access to a Teaching Guide to Shirley-Anne McMillan’s Every Sparrow Falling. Available digitally as a PDF, or as a printed booklet, the guide covers the areas of Language, Names, Folklore, Friendships, Shirley’s own personal philosophies and Homophobia. Written by Shirley herself, the booklet not only guides young readers through the book, but also leads them to question how the issues discussed in the novel might appear in their own day-to-day lives or school environments.

Shirley-Anne McMillan regularly works with young people and is in touch with the issues affecting them today. As a teacher, she developed the Gay Straight Alliance groups in Northern Irish schools to help change attitudes, and she brings this real world knowledge to her fiction. Many of the events in this book are based on true events and there is a note from the author in the back of the book to explain that stories like this happen every day.

BARRINGTON STOKE

Autumn has arrived and with it, we’re delighted to present some new titles – let’s dive in!

It’s a No-Money Day is a poignant and pertinent exploration of life below the poverty line. Mum works really hard, but today there is no money left and no food in the cupboards. Forced to visit the local foodbank, Mum feels ashamed that they have to rely on the kindness of others, but her young daughter can still see all the good in their lives. This is a moving insight into the sad rise and necessity of foodbanks in a child-friendly way, perfect for building empathy in even the youngest of readers.

Moving into reads for upper primary, we have a heart-warming tale full of family and affection from Nicola Davies in Butterflies for Grandpa Joe, illustrated by Mike Byrne. Grandpa Joe is butterfly bonkers. But since Ben’s granny passed away, Grandpa Joe has changed. He doesn’t want to go outside or talk or smile. It’s like he’s a completely different person and it feels like time is running out to help him. If only Ben could find a way to bring the butterflies to his Grandpa. Dealing with grief across generations in a sensitive manner, this is another empathy-building read.

And seeing as we’re into October, we have a spine-tingling horror from Chris Priestley which is perfect for Halloween reading. In Seven Ghosts, Jake and the other finalists in a writing competition have been invited to a stately house for a tour. As their guide leads them through grand rooms, hidden nooks and magnificent grounds, they hear the stories of the seven ghosts who haunt the halls. But strange shapes and shadows follow Jake as he journeys through the house and with each tale, he begins to feel more uneasy. All is not as it seems and soon Jake will discover that something is very, very wrong... This multi-narrative horror also features brilliantly spook-tastic illustrations by the author.
