3. Catalog Description [§335.2] (Insert the description in space below):

Immerses students into the vibrant theatre cities of London, England and Dublin, Ireland. This course explores the significance of each city’s contribution to history and its corresponding development of theatre by attending professional performances, taking backstage tours and exploring historical sites. Highlights in England include Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwick Castle, Stonehenge, the British Museum, Westminster Abbey, the Globe Theatre, and the Tower of London. Ireland highlights include the Trim Castle, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, and Smock Alley Theatre. Students are allotted time to explore the cities on their own to pursue individual interests. A course fee is required.

5. Learning Outcomes [§335.2]

Upon successful completion of the course the student will be able to:

• Evaluate and critique live theatrical performances after attending several West End and Dublin productions

• Identify and describe the most important historical events affecting London and Dublin’s history by visiting museums, historical landmarks, and other culturally relevant sites

• Outline the historical background and development of English and Irish Theatre

6. Planned Sequence of Instruction [§335.2]

[These must be designed to help students achieve the learning outcomes.]

• Attend four to five professionally mounted theatre productions in the West End of London and in Dublin

• Visit historical sites that are highly relevant to understanding the history of England (Westminster Abbey, Stonehenge, City of Bath, Warwick Castle, The Tower of London, Covenant Garden, Big Ben/Parliament, etc.) and Ireland (Dublinia, St Patrick’s Cathedral, Gaiety School of Acting, Glendalough in County Wicklow, Trim Castle).

• Visit sites related to the evolution of the English and Irish Theatre (The Globe Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon, Shakespeare’s birthplace, and Smock Alley Theatre)
