Introduction

This document is the User Guide for the Logger software from . It explains how to install and use the software. Please contact at Logger@ if you have questions or comments. We’d love to hear from you.

Logger is a tool that

• saves you time

• helps you to remember information by saving it in an easy to retrieve format

• makes your computer easier to use.

It does this by giving you a small window, which is always available to you on your computer. It’s always on top, no need to search for it. Through this window you can:

• Use shortcuts or abbreviations to quickly retrieve information you require

• Store information, free-form text, you might later want to retrieve

• Quickly look up phone numbers, passwords and other information you’ve stored in Logger

• All information is date and time stamped, so you could keep a diary

• All information is private and stored only on your computer

• No longer fumble finding web-pages, documents or programs

• Access your to do list with 2 key-strokes

As a productivity tool, Logger improves what we call “pacing”. When you can do things fast on a computer, your pace for all your tasks will speed up. When things take a long time to do your pace will slow and all other tasks you perform will slow down. Logger is meant to help speed up your pace of:

• accessing information you need

• interfacing with software you have

A Brief View of Logger

This is the Logger window.

[pic]

In this window you:

• Type shortcuts to perform tasks for you

• You enter free-form text that will be date and time stamped. You can easily retrieve this information in the future

Commands/Shortcuts

A Logger command is something you can tell logger to do for you, also called shortcuts. Logger comes with predefined “shortcuts,” (page 32) and you can easily set up your own.

When you type a command to Logger, it will do the following:

• Check if you’ve entered a shortcut and execute it if you have

• See if there is a program or document or web page with the entered name and run that program or document.

• If neither a shortcut or program, the system will just log what you’ve entered

Type in the following to Logger and press enter:

• Calc

• Notepad

Any web site, document, program can be typed into Logger and it will try to go to the page , run the program or bring up the document.

The above aren’t shortcuts but they are commands you can enter.

To view the current Logger commands enter “Help” in the Logger window

Try a few of the following shortcuts. Enter the data and press the (Enter) key. (Enter) key must be pressed to finish all Logger commands, to enter a carriage return press Ctrl+Enter.

|Enter |Description |

Blue Background

When executing a Logger command, the Logger window will turn Blue while Logger is waiting for your command to complete.

[pic]

A complete list of preloaded shortcuts is available in Appendix A on page 32.

Set up a Shortcut

One of the main functions of Logger is to use and set up shortcuts. There are two ways to set them up. Method 1 uses a shortcut to add a shortcut

Method 1:

Format: SC,,

Where: SC – is the ShortCut command that tells Logger you are setting up a shortcut.

is the shortcut characters you will type, like “A” for Amazon or “G" for Google.

is the action for the shortcut to perform,

|Action |Example |

|web page to load | |

| | |

|Program to run |Calc.exe |

| |C:\program files\xyz.exe |

|Document to open |C:\files\new\userguide.doc |

| |C:\files\old\main.xls |

| |C:\files\demo.txt |

| |C:\misc\project.ppt |

Enter the following:

Type: SC,C,CALC.EXE and press (Enter)

[pic]

The system will move the entered data to the caption:

[pic]

This will add a shortcut for the letter “C”, you will see the Windows Calculator when entering this in the Logger window.

Enter “C” and the Windows calculator will appear:

[pic]

Method 2:

Type in “SC” for “ShortCut” at the Logger window or go to “Edit-Shortcuts Alphabetical” from the menu

The following Grid will display:

[pic]

The circled entry is the shortcut we just added. Note, that the Description is missing. Click the box and type in “Calculator” in this field

Press the (Add) button and the Grid will be positioned to the bottom:

[pic]

We are going to add a shortcut to” Lycos” web portal with the shortcut “L”

You may use the mouse to position to the next field “Parms”, or Tab to the field.

This field is the number of parameters being passed to the shortcut. Enter “0” here and click the next field with the mouse “ShortCutData”. Parameters are data you can pass to a shortcut to substitute something.

Enter which is the Lycos web page and click the “Description” field

You should enter a “Description” of “Lycos”

Press the (Close) button to finish the operation

[pic]

Enter “L” to the Logger window and the Lycos web page should display. You could position to the next line to add another shortcut.

[pic]

Lycos , web-page, should display (see below):

[pic][pic][pic]

Parameters

One of the advantages of Logger is the ability to pass parameters to a shortcut. On the Lycos window enter the word “dog” in the search box and press the (Search) button. In the URL field the data will change to

We will now define a shortcut to do a search on Lycos by entering “LS ” (LS is an abbreviation for “Lycos Search”. You can use whatever abbreviation you want). To set up the shortcut enter “SC,LS,” in the Logger window

[pic]

Go to the Lycos window and copy the URL using Ctrl+C and then go back to the Logger window and use Ctrl+V to paste in the link

[pic]

Replace the word “dog” with the characters “”. This tells logger to substitute the first parameter.

[pic]

And press Enter. The following will appear:

[pic]

Now, to run a Lycos search for the word “cats” enter: “LS CATS”

[pic]

and press Enter. The Lycos window matching “Cats” will be displayed

[pic]

Parameters are entered by entering where “n” is the number of the parameter.

Logger supports 1 – 9 parameters. Each parameter corresponds to the position after the shortcut separated by spaces.

First Character

The string will return the First Character of . This combination is useful when some data is stored in a directory that uses the first character, like the Yahoo Stock profile. The URL for this window for IBM is . The to set up a shortcut for this URL enter:

Sc, yp,

This will set the shortcut “YP” (Yahoo Profile) to execute properly when you enter: YP IBM.

Adding Shortcuts to Programs

To determine program name to use, you can click a desktop item or Windows menu and press the Right Mouse button and select “Properties”

[pic]

You can click a desktop icon and press Alt+Enter and the properties window will come up. Below the Resource monitor icon was selected and the following was displayed:

[pic]

To add the shortcut enter:

SC,RM, RSCMTR.exe

If the program doesn’t start you may have to copy the path and enter

SC, RM, c:\windows\desktop\rscmtr.exe

Determining a Windows Shortcut

Shortcuts on in windows are icons that can run programs for you. To determine what is set for Windows Shortcut, click the icon on your desktop and press Alt+Enter or Right Click the mouse. The following is what came up for McAffe anti-virus:

[pic]

Highlight the Target and copy to the Clipboard by pressing Ctrl+C

Then enter Logger Shortcut:

SC,M, "C:\Program Files\\agent\mcagent.exe" /launchsc

Entering “M” will now bring up McAfee software

For menus, bring up the menus from the Start button, go to the menu and press the Right Mouse button, then select the “Properties” and follow directions above.

Determining a web-site

There are 3 methods to determine a web-link

• Via URL on the browser

• The status line

• The source code

[pic]

The URL can be copied and pasted to a shortcut.

You can hold the mouse over a link and the URL will sometimes appear in the status bar. You can use this to determine the URL.

If you still don’t have the proper URL, and you have experience with HTML, you can go to the “Edit” – “Source” from the browser and determine how a link is called. Registered users can contact us at Logger@ or via a Live Operator at for assistance.

Determining a document

Enter the full document name as the shortcut data. For an easy way to get the full document name go to the “Start” button – “Documents”, select the document , right click and select “Properties”, and the following type of dialog will display:

[pic]

Copy from the target to set up the Logger Shortcut.

There may be some cases where the Target is grayed out like below:

Sending keys - @S

Each key is represented by one or more characters. To specify a single keyboard character, use the character itself. For example, to represent the letter A, use "A" for string. To represent more than one character, append each additional character to the one preceding it. To represent the letters A, B, and C, use "ABC" for string.

The plus sign (+), caret (^), percent sign (%), tilde (~), and parentheses ( ) have special meanings to SendKeys. To specify one of these characters, enclose it within braces ({}). For example, to specify the plus sign, use {+}. Brackets ([ ]) have no special meaning to SendKeys, but you must enclose them in braces. In other applications, brackets do have a special meaning that may be significant when dynamic data exchange (DDE) occurs. To specify brace characters, use {{} and {}}.

To specify characters that aren't displayed when you press a key, such as ENTER or TAB, and keys that represent actions rather than characters, use the codes shown below:

|Key |Code |

|BACKSPACE |{BACKSPACE}, {BS}, or {BKSP} |

|BREAK |{BREAK} |

|CAPS LOCK |{CAPSLOCK} |

|DEL or DELETE |{DELETE} or {DEL} |

|F2 |{F2} |

|F3 |{F3} |

|F4 |{F4} |

|F5 |{F5} |

|F6 |{F6} |

|F7 |{F7} |

|F8 |{F8} |

|F9 |{F9} |

|F10 |{F10} |

|F12 |{F12} |

|F13 |{F13} |

|F14 |{F14} |

|F15 |{F15} |

|F16 |{F16} |

To specify keys combined with any combination of the SHIFT, CTRL, and ALT keys, precede the key code with one or more of the following codes:

|Key |Code |

|SHIFT |+ |

|CTRL |^ |

|ALT |% |

To specify that any combination of SHIFT, CTRL, and ALT should be held down while several other keys are pressed, enclose the code for those keys in parentheses. For example, to specify to hold down SHIFT while E and C are pressed, use "+(EC)". To specify to hold down SHIFT while E is pressed, followed by C without SHIFT, use "+EC".

To specify repeating keys, use the form {key number}. You must put a space between key and number. For example, {LEFT 42} means press the LEFT ARROW key 42 times; {h 10} means press H 10 times.

Note You can't use @S to send keystrokes to an application that is not designed to run in Microsoft Windows. @S also can't send the PRINT SCREEN key {PRTSC} to any application.

Send Key Warning

• Sendkeys can cause unexpected results to occur if your not careful using them or if an application has a popup window that becomes active while a send key string is executing

Determining Programs and Web sites

• Copy from the URL

• Hold mousepointer over and read from caption

• Look at the source code for the web page.

• Highlight the icon and select properties
