Greetings on the eve of our celebration of St. Mary's Centennial! These past months have been delightful, as we receive notes, letters and phone calls from our extended community, giving thanks for St. Mary's and her ministry these past 100 years. I look forward to seeing so many of you on May 27th as we celebrate, with our diocesan bishop, The Rt. Rev. J. Jon Bruno and other friends.

The Book of Common Prayer provides a special Litany of Thanksgiving for a Church, which we will use in place of the usual prayers of the people at our May 27 celebration. The Litany includes these prayersthoughts:

"Let us thank God whom we worship here in the beauty of holiness. Eternal God, the heaven of heavens cannot contain you, much less the walls of temples made with hands. Graciously receive our thanks for this place, and accept the work of our hands, offered to your honor and glory. // For the Church universal, of which these visible buildings are the symbol, We thank you, Lord. // For this place where we may be still and know that you are God, We thank you, Lord... // For the blessing of our vows and the crowning of our years with your goodness, We thank you, Lord. // For the faith of those who have gone before us and for our encouragement by their perseverance, We thank you, Lord...." And I add my own prayer: For the faith of those who still gather here, for all of youus who lift your voices to the glory of God at St. Mary's in the year 2007 and who will continue to do so in her second century to come, We I thank you, Lord.

As I look with great joy toward our gathering on May 27 I give thanks for all these things. I also give thanks for Tom Guzman, chair of the Centennial Committee, and Faith Ichida, consultant, and the many other people who have labored so that we may celebrate in fullness and abundance. I give thanks for the many of you who have given generously of your time, treasure and energy in this effort.

I am also looking forward to the second and concluding celebration of our centennial year. That luncheon will be held on Saturday, October 20, at Almansor Court. Mark your calendars now to save the date -- and look for more details as we publish them throughout the summer.

Blessings to you all. Faithfully, Alix+

CLERGY CORNER

Greetings in the name of Christ. The Season of Lent begins with the March 1 observance of Ash Wednesday. In order to prepare ourselves for this Lenten period, I would like to share some reflections from the book New Proclamation (2005, Augsberg Press):

"The rush of modern living makes it extremely difficult for believers today to focus on development of their spiritual lives.   In the season of Lent, it is possible to call attention to the need for ongoing renewal of the spirit and commitment to holy living.

It's one thing to hear the story of Jesus going into the wilderness for forty days and fighting against the temptations of the world. It is an entirely different thing for someone sitting in church today to realize that she or he faces some of the same temptations in modern society... The astounding thing about Lent is that it combines the very personal process of examining one's own spiritual life with the corporate process of building a community of spiritually engaged believers.

The [scriptural lectionary] texts selected for Lent 2006 provide a strong foundation and rich resource for both of these tasks. The Ash Wednesday texts emphasize the fact that attention to life and growth is not a simple one-way journey, but rather an extended sojourn with God. Even the practices and rituals that seem most appropriate for that walk need to be examined with great care. The first Sunday [March 5] concentrates on new beginnings and especially on Jesus' own preparation for ministry and for the passion. Week two [March 12] reminds us of the difficulties that are inherent in any attempt to walk as a follower of Jesus, where the end of the path may be one of self-sacrifice and service. Human interaction with God's law is the focus of the texts in week three [March 19]. The readings highlight the law as both the wisdom of God and a stumbling block for humans. The week four [March 26] lection is a stark reminder that both tragic loss and ultimate exhilaration can be part of the human journey with God. The imagery of wandering, going up, and being lifted up proves to have a dual significance in this context. Finally, the texts for week five [April 2] include vivid reminders that God continues to call us to a personal relationship, but as we turn to Holy Week, we are also reminded of the costs associated with that covenant relationship." [Author, Daniel N. Schowalter; pp. 132-133]

I look forward to worshiping together with you during this season of Lent, and encountering the themes in the appointed scriptural texts as outlined above. My prayer for each of you, and for myself, during this season of Lent is that we will take the opportunity, as Prof. Schowalter suggests, "not only to walk with Jesus but also to reflect deeply on the implications, the responsibilities, and the potential outcomes of that walk." May we all search our hearts, souls and minds, seek forgiveness where it is needed, and move gratefully toward the light that God shines on our paths.

Faithfully, Alix+

community connections

We are delighted to announce that Erica Sugimori, a Tulane/UCLA Public Health student, joins us in service as our very own Public Health Intern! Over the next six months, Erica will be helping our community address issues of nutrition, exercise and general health through a series of programs and classes for both Spanish and English speakers. She will also be exploring the possibility of creating a community garden here at the church. Erika will be with us from time to time on Sunday mornings and would welcome getting to know each of you personally. Please introduce yourself and feel free to contact her via email at easugi4@. She is eager to respond to your public health concerns and would welcome a helping hand in her community work. Nicole+

A word of introduction from Erika Sugimori… “Greetings and nice to meet you! I am a second-year graduate student of International Public Health at Tulane University, in New Orleans. Although I have been more of a visitor to Los Angeles for quite a while now, I am a Southern California native. The last eight years have been an interesting journey. I have had the opportunity to live, work, and study in Berkeley, Mexico, New Orleans, and now, Los Angeles. I came back to Los Angeles in August, after hurricane Katrina. While the circumstances that brought about my return were not ideal, to say the least, this experience has given me the chance to be close to friends and family, and get to know the city again. Since my return, I have had a lot of support from friends, family, and fellow Angelenos. It was with this much needed support that I was able to complete my coursework at UCLA last quarter. Now, I am here at St. Mary’s as your community health intern. I look forward to meeting you all and working together in your community. Douzo yoroshiku onegaishimasu. (I must add that this is also a unique opportunity for me to use my rusty language skills. So, if anyone would like to share a little Japanese or Spanish, it would be much appreciated!) Thank you for welcoming me to your church.

CLERGY CORNER

Greetings to all in the name of Christ.

As Summer comes, we mark a time of transitions at St. Mary's. In June we said farewell to our Youth Choir Director, Rebecca Straayer, who is moving on to another job. We also gathered to celebrate and say good-bye to Carolyn and Ron Morinishi and their children who are moving to Missouri. (Carolyn will continue to edit our monthly issues of "The Spirit"). Our clergy community marked the retirement of our friend and colleague, The Rev. Connor Lynn, rector of St. Mary's, Palms, as he prepares to retire in August. St. Mary's also marked the high school and college graduations of some of our young people, walking beside them as they transition into new phases of their lives. We marked the end of the 2004-05 program year, paying tribute to our Sunday School teachers who serve so faithfully. At the same time, we were preparing for St. Mary's new Summer Enrichment and Spirituality Program which began on June 20, and looking ahead toward the new program year. And, under the capable leadership of Tom Guzman, we launched the Centennial Celebration Steering Committee... These are all natural events in the life of a parish. We share our sadness at departures, our happiness at jobs well done and completed, and our joy for new beginnings.

St. Mary's Vestry and I and Nicole had our annual retreat June 10 and 11 at the church. Among other topics we evaluated the program year that is just ending, and looked ahead to the year 2007, when we will celebrate our Centennial. We also looked beyond the centennial: "What are your dreams for St. Mary's for the next 25 to 50 years?" It was helpful to share our dreams and look at possibilities. It was also helpful to share our concerns and limitations. All in all, we did not hatch any grand plan for the next half-century, but we will continue to grapple with long-range issues and keep you advised as we go. We did agree on our commitment to minister to the already-existing congregation, as we also open our doors to those in our immediate neighborhood. We all, as a community of faith, shape the vision and direction of this parish.

St. Mary's is blessed with remarkable leaders, both on the Vestry and serving in other capacities. Each and every one of you has something important to contribute to this House of God that has now been gathering for 98 years. Let us look back at those who have given so much, and ahead to those who will join us on this journey, and give thanks to God for the opportunity to serve.

Let us also embrace St. Mary's new Mission Statement, which was adopted by the Vestry last summer and which we are pleased to unfold:

"St. Mary's Episcopal Church, a welcoming community of faith, hope, and love shaped by the Japanese-American experience, strives to grow in our relationship with God through worship, fellowship, outreach, and service." Together, we will live into and embody --make incarnational-- that mission.

Peace and blessings,

Alix+

April Showers Bring May Flowers

MAYBE WE DO NOT HAVE TONS OF RAIN IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, BUT WE DO HAVE SHOWERS OF BLESSINGS AT ST. MARY’S: BLESSINGS IN THE FORM OF NEW SPANISH SPEAKING FRIENDS SHARING OUR CHURCH, AND BLESSINGS IN THE FORM OF PARISHIONERS DONATING GENEROUSLY TO SUPPORT OUR MISSION AND OUTREACH PROGRAMS.

Thank you to many anonymous donors, Margaret Atkinson, Judy Dionzon, Keiko Hamagiwa, Marian Kubota, Wally and Betty Nakama, Yoshiko Sakurai, Fusa Sugawara, Irene Yoneshige, Midori Yoshimura, and Margaret Yuki and the St. Mary's Altar Guild. Together they blessed us with rice crispy treats, juices, cans of food, crackers, cookies, muffins, adult and children’s clothing, toys, craft supplies, household goods, and hours spent with the ESL child care music class and the Spanish language service. With our increase in children in the ESL child care room, we have been able to keep up with the increased need for snacks because of your gifts to our program. Our major needs continue to be juice, cookies, and crackers.

May God’s blessings flow in the lives of everyone in our St. Mary’s family. As Lent concludes, I wish you all a blessed Easter!

LITURGY IN LENT

In our celebration of Lent this year, we will be worshipping with the Enriching our Worship bulletin complied by the Liturgy and Music Committee for seasonal use. During this short liturgical season that is characterized by reflection and repentance, we will follow the second part of the bulletin—Holy Eucharist B—that draws heavily from the texts of the Anglican New Zealand Prayer Book. While more “traditional” in character than Form A that we used this past fall, this liturgy will nonetheless introduce us to some new service music and different images of God; in response to your feedback, the more traditional version of the Lord’s Prayer will be recited every Sunday.

The Liturgy and Music Committee thanks you for your feedback of your experience worshipping with EOW last year. Here are some comments gleaned from the surveys:

The highlight of using the EOW liturgy was getting to try something new, especially saying the Prayers of the People written by people who attend our church.

I liked following the service using just one booklet rather than back and forth to the Prayer Book. It’s easier to follows the service especially for visitors and those new to the church.

I do not like the new version of the Lord’s Prayer, General Confession and Creed in the EOW. Why do we have to be at odds with the BCP which is used by the Episcopal Church in the Diocese as well as nationally? Why was EOW imposed on the congregation without the congregation first being informed of the change?

It’s a good change.

My least favorite part of using the EOW liturgy has been saying the Nicene Creed and Lord’s Prayer because it was hard to try not to say the old regular one we are use to.

I enjoy singing the old familiar tunes and hymns and listening to the new ones.

The highlight of using EOW has been the new sung responses, using new and different Prayer of the People.

I don’t like the new Lord’s Prayer in the EOW liturgy. Using the EOW liturgy was a positive change if only used seasonally.

I believe that changing our worship format seasonally helps keep the liturgy fresh.

Good job!!

Please continue to give us your feedback as we use this bulletin in March and April. The Liturgy and Music Committee will evaluate your experience of worshipping with Form B of EOW at the end of Lent.

Lenten blessings,

The Liturgy and Music Committee of St. Mary’s

It was brought to our attention that a resolution was passed at the Special Convention of September, 1996 that parishs’ Mission Share Fund requested percentage is 15% with a minimum of 12%. A motion was made to meet the 12%, but cut back on Carlos’ and Emma’s times to reduce the expected deficit. After discussion, that motion did not pass. VESTRY SUMMARY – APRIL 17, 2005

Report on Ministry Fair: Lauretta reported on the Ministry Fair held at Campbell Hall in Laurel Canyon on April 2nd. Attending from St. Mary’s were Lauretta, Nicole accompanied by 10 members of the Spanish-speaking ESL-congregation, Gwendolyn and Steve Nishibayashi. Kathryn Nishibayashi was also there as a presenter. Lauretta attended the workshop for Senior Wardens and Gwendolyn and Steve attended others. Lauretta enjoyed the experience very much and thanks St. Mary’s for sending her.

Vestry Retreat: June 10-11. Mo. Alix and Nicole are working on a facilitator, possibly the strategist for United Methodist Church, who is excellent on vision work.

Mo. Alix’s Sabbatical: Mo. Alix went over her sabbatical proposal which she had proviously e-mailed to Vestry members. It covers the dates, purpose, etc. of her sabbatical. She also reported that on Wednesday, April 13th, she and Dr. Steve Nishibayashi (Vestry representative) met with the Rev. Mark Kowalewski at the Cathedral Center regarding her request for Sabbatical in the year 2006. Mark advised that the Diocese will pay one-third of the Sabbatical expense with a cap of $2,500 for a 12 week Sabbatical. However, since only one month of Sabbatical time is being requested, Mark advised that Mo. Alix may want to use only one-third to one-half of that money for this sabbatical and keep the rest in reserve for a future sabbatical.

Endowment Committee Action: Endowment Committee meeting is scheduled for May 1 to decide on the recommendations of the Budget Committee.

Celtic Cross Task Force: Actions pending – Awaiting Bruce’s return

Centennial Celebration Planning Committee: An announcement will be made that anyone who wishes to help on this committee to call the office. A list of names was generated for people who will be asked to be on this committee. Morio Fukuto will also be contacted for names of who helped on the 75th Celebration. A meeting of this committee is planned for June 12th at 8:30 AM. Tom Guzman is working on reducing the printing costs.

Summer Enrichment Program: This summer, St. Mary's will offer a half-day Summer Enrichment and Spirituality Program for neighborhood children from June 20 through July 21. The expenses for this program will be covered by part of a very generous anonymous parishioner gift designated as the “Arigato Heritage Gift”. St. Mary’s will also receive a summer intern funded by the Lilly Foundation who will run the program. Anthony Palacio, who is a current HeadStart teacher at St. Mary’s (and last year's HeadStart supervisor) will also be part of the program. Anthony’s salary will be paid for out of the Arigato Heritage Fund.

Bazaar Meeting: Mother Alix reported that the organizational bazaar meeting went well. Volunteers are needed to make phone calls, mainly to donors to request donations and coordinate pick up schedules. Phone calls are preferably made from the church office to facilitate coordination with the 3” X 5” pick-up cards, but calls from home can be worked out.

FICA coverage for Nicole: For a “normal” worker, half of FICA (formal name for Social Security) “tax” is paid by the employer, and the other half is paid post-tax by the employee. However, the IRS considers clergy to be self-employed, so they must pay 15.3% of their pre-tax salary if they want to be part of the Social Security program. Nicole has pointed out that many parishes in the diocese and around the country provide FICA compensation as part of their salary package. Since St. Mary’s compensation package was the lowest she received, she passed over a higher salary to be at St. Mary’s. In consideration of this, she is requesting that in her second year of ministry (a new contract will begin on Sept. 1, 2005), the “normal” part of an employer’s Social Security cost (half of total) be included in her next contract.

This subject was discussed. However, there are many unknowns (FICA has never previously been part of our compensation package to any clergy). For one, since the IRS considers clergy to be self-employed, St. Mary’s cannot just write them a check as normal employers do. Is a “reimbursement” taxable or non-taxable? If it is taxable, we may as well just raise her base salary because she’ll pay tax on it anyway. But that’ll increase the amount St. Mary’s has to pay the diocese for Nicole’s diocesan retirement. This subject was tabled pending investigation of these issues and inclusion of Dr. Steve who is chair of the Budget Committee.

Respectfully submitted, LeRoy Ichida (Clerk)

support our “virtual bazaar”!

IMAGINE YOU ARE WALKING ACROSS AN URBAN PARKING LOT, THE STRAINS OF “NANATSU NO KO” FILLING THE AIR, CROWDED WITH FOOD AND GAME BOOTHS AND MANY PEOPLE HAVING A GREAT TIME. YOU GET A WHIFF OF TERIYAKI SMOKE AND YOUR MOUTH BEGINS TO WATER. YOU REACH INTO YOUR POCKET, ONLY TO FIND THAT YOUR ONCE-FAT WAD OF SCRIP HAS DWINDLED DOWN TO A FEW SHEETS. YOU CAN’T DENY YOURSELF ANOTHER TASTE OF THAT FAMOUS TERIYAKI, SO YOU HEAD OVER TO THE BOOTH NEAR THE GLASS DOORS, WHERE SOME FRIENDLY FACES ARE WILLING TO SELL YOU MORE SCRIP. YOU REACH FOR YOUR CHECKBOOK . . .

Wait, this is 2007!! We aren’t having a “real” bazaar this year so we can focus our energies on the upcoming Centennial Celebration! However, you can still reach for your checkbook and support the Building and Grounds Fund with a check to St. Mary’s (on the memo line write “Building and Capital Fund”). You might not get a taste of that famous teriyaki this year, but you’ll still support a great cause (and it’s certainly less calories this way!) -- Carolyn Morinishi

EDUCATON FOR MINISTRY PROGRAM CONTINUES IN HUNTINGTON BEACH: FALL VACANCIES FOR YEAR ONE STUDENTS ANNOUNCED

Education for Ministry (EfM) is a four year adult education program sponsored by the School of Extension at the University of the South in Sewanee. The diocese's current EfM class, at St. Wilfrid of York Episcopal Church in Huntington Beach, started in September 2005, includes eight Year Two, Year Three and Year Four students. The classes study the historical context, the impact and the significance to our own theological perspective of the Old and New Testament scriptures, the church development and the contributions of theological trends and thinkers, "expanding the limits of our own thinking, developing maturity in our personal beliefs and familiarity with other Christian traditions. Our EfM group shares the best qualities of the small group experience. We support each other spiritually and personally. We challenge each other and grow in our Christian love."

The EfM group, meeting at St. Wilfrid of York Episcopal Church, 18631 Chapel Lane, Huntington Beach, will have vacancies for Year One students beginning in September 2006. The group will meet on Wednesday nights for the 2006-2007 school year. Anyone interested in EfM training may contact Karin Easter Gurwell at 714.372.2266 for enrollment, tuition and scholarship information.

'CENTERPOINT' TO OFFER CLASSES FOR SPIRITUAL EXPLORATION AND DISCERNMENT

Do you seek a richer and deeper spiritual life? Do you sense there is much more to your spiritual journey with God? Centerpoint I is a ten-month ecumenical program designed to introduce participants to the history and practices of spiritual direction, Christian spirituality, and personal spiritual discernment.

Centerpoint I meets in small groups in which participants explore and expand their spiritual lives, learning to become more attentive to the experience of God. They learn about the rich potential of spiritual direction in the life of Christian men and women, and develop some of the skills helpful in strengthening their spiritual lives and the experience of community as they share the journey with others. This includes a process by which participants may discern a call to be a spiritual director.

New Centerpoint I classes begin in September 2005, and meet once a month. Classes are planned for Santa Barbara, Ventura, San Luis Obispo, San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles (including at St. Alban's Church, Westwood), and Pasadena. Deadline for applications is July 1: classes fill quickly. For more information, contact Dixie Young at 805.684.5284.

"HELPING SENIORS DOWNSIZE" IS TOPIC AT MEETING OF CHILDREN OF OLDER PARENTS (COOP) AT ST. ALBAN'S, WESTWOOD

Mona Staso, a professional organizer who specializes in helping seniors downsize their household possessions, will speak at the next meeting of COOP, the St. Alban's discussion group focusing on those caring for or concerned about the welfare of elderly parents. The meeting is at 7.30pm on Wednesday, June 15, in the Upper Lounge at St. Alban's Episcopal Church, 580 Hilgard Avenue, Los Angeles

Through her company, TLC Transitions & Organizing, Staso helps people of all ages get organized and decluttered. She focuses on helping seniors move from lifelong homes into assisted living or into retirement communities. She addresses emotional issues and seeks to establish a positive perspective. For further information, contact Vicki Torres at votorres@ or call the office at St. Alban's, 310.208.6516 or visit

An Invitation….for donations of time, talent and food for the journey

A group of our ESL students gathers every Tuesday and Thursday at 11am to say Noon-Day Prayer, celebration Eucharist, sing hymns or participate in a Bible Study. If you find yourself near St. Mary's on those days, you are invited to join in our activities and worship.

We also invite you to be our guest in the Childcare Room. We encourage parishioners (or teams of parishioners) to come read to our ESL children or prepare a short project for the children as a way of building relationships between the various parts of the St Mary's community.

We are currently in need of food and snack items for our semi-weekly ESL Hospitality Receptions. Donations of the following items are greatly appreciated:

-nuts or dried fruit

-fresh fruit (bananas, apples, oranges)

-popcorn, asian rice crackers, or Nature Valley granola bars

-juice boxes (100% juice) or gallon jugs of 100% juice

-paper cups

THANKS TO ST. MARY'S FROM THE "GET ON THE BUS" PROJECT

On Friday, May 6 Fusa Sugawara and Carolyn Lee joined Mother Alix at the Roman Catholic Archdiocese offices to support the interfaith "Get on the Bus" project that we highlighted in the April and May Spirits. This project takes children whose mothers are incarcerated to visit their mothers on the Friday before Mother's Day each year. Our three members helped give the children breakfast, get their registration papers in order, and helped look for a child and adult sponsor that had gotten lost on Wilshire Blvd. and almost missed the trip entirely! In addition to the hands-on support, St. Mary's members and friends contributed $225.00 toward the effort; our Young Adults provided $75 of the money they made at the Easter breakfast. Here is a thank you message from the project coordinators, Sister Suzanne Jabro and Sister Suzanne Steffen:

"All of us working on the 'Get on the Bus' project, a Mother's Day Event, thank you for your gift. Your generosity helped us bring children to Chowchilla to visit their mothers [in prison]. Let us continue to share our gifts and talents so that peace and reconciliation will take root in each of our lives, our community, and the world... You are truly a 'great neighbor.' Thank you for uniting children with their moms this Mother's Day [weekend]."

mother's day corsage/flower sale

DESPITE WARM WEATHER CONDITIONS, EARLIER-THAN-NORMAL BLOOMS, AND A POTENTIAL ORCHID SHORTAGE, THE MOTHER'S DAY CORSAGE/FLOWER SALE WAS STILL A GREAT SUCCESS! WHEN THE USUAL FLOWER DONORS REPORTED FEW AVAILABLE ORCHIDS AT THEIR HOME GARDENS, THE DESPERATE CALL WENT OUT AND GEORGE OSHITA, LARRY HIGA AND STAN NAKAMURA ASKED ALL THEIR ORCHID-GROWING FRIENDS FOR DONATIONS. SO, DESPITE THE POTENTIAL SHORTAGE, THERE WERE ENOUGH FLOWERS FOR ALL!

Thanks to the people who helped at the corsage workshop: Faith Ichida, Melinda Sata, Grandma Tsuruko Higa, Bobbie Higa, Marian Kubota, Leanna and Melissa Morinishi.
