8th Grade Science Syllabus & Grading PolicyMrs. Shumaker 2019-2020MATERIALS NEEDED DAILYISN -Interactive Student Notebook - Non spiral/ spiral composition bookPlanner Glue SticksPencils/ HighlighterColored pencils or fine tip washable markers ( non permanent) Pencil sharpener with shavings catchGRADINGGrades will be determined by homework, classwork, labs, activities, Interactive Student Notebook, Science Starter, Tests, assessments and Projects. Homework - 15%Tests/Projects - 40%Quizzes- 20%Classwork/Labs/Activities- 25%Late work/ Unfinished Work- All students are expected to complete assignments. Students will be penalized 10 points a day for late work. In the event of an absence, students will have 2 days to make up missed work. Classroom Procedure Students are expected to complete a Science Starter every day . All students will create and use an Interactive Student Notebook for the Science classroom. All completed work must be turned into teacher to be graded. If you are absent, check the “Missed Work” folders for make up work.SCIENCE CURRICULUMCourse Overview8th Grade Science will still be using the Essential Standards from the Department of Public Education of North Carolina. The following is a short list:8.P.1 - Matter: Properties and Change - Elements, the Periodic Table, Law of Conservation of Mass. 8.P.2 - Energy: Conservation and Transfer - Types of energy sources and renewable verses non renewable energy. 8.E.1 - Earth Systems Structures and Processes - Hydrosphere (all water on Earth), water quality and availability. 8.E.2 - Earth History - Biological and geological history of Earth including index fossils, the Law of Superposition, and ice cores. 8.L.1 - Structures and Functions of Living Organisms - Microorganisms like viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites.8.L.2 - Structures and Functions of Living Organisms - Biotechnology8.L.3 - Ecosystems - Food webs, biotic, abiotic factors and relationships between organisms. 8.L.4 - Evolution and Genetics - Theory of evolution, genetic variation and biological and geological processes that impact the Earth.8.L.5 - Molecular Biology - Food and bodily chemical reactions Feel free to contact me at shumakp@ with any questions.Sign and detach the bottom portion of this letter.
