E-learning in action: A first look at classrooms of tomorrow

Leading with passion

It's lesson time at Tung Wah Group of Hospitals Tang Shiu Kin Primary School, but no textbooks or pencils can be found. Here, teaching and learning is done with gentle taps on Samsung tablets.

The school is reaping the benefits of the Samsung Smart School Citizenship Project. Their 37 Samsung e-learning sets are used in some subjects such as Chinese, English, Maths, General Studies and Visual Arts, and teachers are reporting early signs of success.

"Lessons are more interactive and students are keener to participate," said Curriculum Leader Ms. Lee Yukshan. "There's also less paper in the classroom!"

English Curriculum Leader Ms. Yu Pui-ying shared a useful tip: "There's no need to re-do all your lesson plans. For my English class, I simply identified areas in the lesson that could be enhanced by the e-learning sets." (see "Enhancing the lesson")

Enhancing the lesson

Screen Sharing ? shared reading among students White Board ? students write and submit answers

simultaneously Quiz & Poll ? increase interest and quickly assess

student progress Badges ? motivate students with instant recognition

Small steps, lasting impact

For SRBCEPSA Ho Sau Ki School, this is their first encounter with e-learning. To familiarize students with the Samsung e-learning sets, recent IT and General Studies classes were devoted to hands-on training.

According to teacher Mr. Wong Chi-on, for schools wishing to introduce e-learning for the first time, Primary 3 or 4 students are ideal targets. "Students of this age are well developed enough both mentally and physically to handle the electronic devices," said Mr. Wong.

From Our Office to Your School

Samsung Ambassadors are making a splash in our Project Schools. A number of our dedicated staff recently visited the schools to observe happenings in the e-classrooms.

TOp Tips

Improving Engagement For our senior Liberal

Studies

class,

we

appointed group leaders and trained them to

navigate the Samsung School Solution and create

mind maps with apps. Teachers could then

easily monitor the groups' progress and show

the outcome of discussions on screen.

-- Po Chiu Catholic Secondary School

Our teachers recorded the steps in solving Maths

problems with the screen capturing function

on Samsung tablets, and replayed them on

campus TV. Students could revisit the highlights

during lunch break or after school, and were

enthusiastic about how the videos helped

reinforce what was taught.

Motivating Students

We held an English dictation contest with Primary 2 students. Students were divided into groups of 3. Each group had more abled, average and less abled students, and they took turns to dictate the words. More abled ones took the lead to write on the Whiteboard as less abled ones observed. By showing their answers on screen and awarding students, this boosted learning motivation. -- Tsuen Wan Public Ho Chuen Yiu Memorial Primary School

Technical Tips

Before class, preload the Samsung School Solution and all required teaching materials on students' tablets. This will save downloading time in class. -- Ng Yuk Secondary School
