Although things might look and feel different due to the changes around the school due to COVID-19, our pupils are working really hard and engaging with their learning. I was very proud of the Primary 7 pupils who still managed with the support of their teachers, Miss Eunson & Richard Taylor to put together a really thoughtful and moving WWII and Remembrance assembly. Primary 2 have bowled me over recently with the facts they are collecting about dinosaurs and their models have been magnificent. The Cove have all be enjoying learning about the planets and have made some wonderful Rockets to take them there! Finally I have to give a mention to all the dedicated runners and Gareth Hill, our Active Schools Co-ordinator, who turn up each week to the weekly DPS Run Club - normally 35-40 pupils for P3 and 45-50 pupils for P4-P7. Great efforts!TwitterTwitter is a great way for us to quickly share information and our fantastic achievements with parents and the community. Our whole school twitter page currently has over 1700 followers. Each year stage also has a twitter page. You can easily view the pages without signing up to twitter, although if you do want to sign up then you can ‘follow’ us.Twitter Pages 2020/2021Whole School Twitter Page: @DunbarPrimaryNursery: @DunbarNurseryP1: @dunbarprimaryp1P2: @Primary2DPSP3: @primary3dpsP4: @DunbarP42021P5: @Primary5dpsP6: @P6DunbarP7: @P7DunbarFuture Leaders ProgrammeGareth Hill and Brad Robertson have worked with two pupils from every class at Lochend who volunteered to take part in the Future Leaders training programme. This means we now have 20 brand new fitness classes for each bubble at Lochend Campus which will be run by the two children in their class and supported by their teacher. Dunbar Primary School are the first primary in East Lothian to do this at this scale. We will share photographs of the training and the sessions they deliver on our twitter pages.Santa Run Thank you to Alice MacKenzie and Gareth Hill who are organising another Santa Run this year! We had great fun running laps last year and this time we will be using the Hallhill track and are being provided with suitable uplifting running tunes by Bobby - many thanks!John Muir pupils will be running on Monday 7th and Tuesday 8th December.Lochend Pupils will be running on Wednesday 9th, Thursday 10th and Friday 11th December. Sponsorship forms have been sent out should you wish to take part in the Parent Council fundraiser.Christmas EventsYou should have received, over the past few days, information on events that will still be taking place at DPS as part of our Christmas celebrations:All pupils will get to see an on-line Pantomime (Robin Hood) during the week 7th – 11th December. Please remember to pay your child’s 50p to cover the cost of the show and an ice-lolly/choc-ice.Christmas Lunch information has gone out via email (please call the office if you need a paper copy). Please sign your son/daughter up for the day of their year stage lunch. The class teachers will be serving the lunches to pupils in their classrooms and we have plans to create a festive atmosphere so the pupils enjoy this different experience!Christmas Parties will still be happening but we will be spacing them out over the final fortnight of school as we can only hold them for one class at a time. We are asking that on their class party day the pupils come to school in casual, comfortable clothes – jeans, leggings, t-shirts and jumpers. We always love seeing the pretty party dresses and ballerina pumps or dickie bows and waistcoats – but this year we feel that as the children will be going out for break and lunch before their party, these outfits are not going to be warm enough and we would not want them to be ruined.(We are really hopeful that at some point in 2021 there will be an opportunity for a BIG PARTY and so this will be the time to get the special outfits out!)Dunbar Basics Bank – Christmas Hamper AppealCOMMUNITY is one of our school values & we are working together with Dunbar Basics Bank to support their Christmas Hamper Appeal. If you're able to add an extra item to your shopping over the next few weeks your child can bring it to their class teacher by Thursday 3rd December. We have posted the list of items to our school website, whole school twitter page (@DunbarPrimary) and the Parent Council Facebook page. Lunch ArrangementsAs the weather gets colder and wetter, although it was a very pleasant 14° on Tuesday, we will, as from Wednesday 18th November, ensure all pupils at John Muir & Lochend have their lunches in the classroom for the first 15 minutes every day. Classes will then have 30 minutes to play outdoors in their zone as usual.Christmas LightsMany thanks to the Christmas Light Committee who once again offered every pupil at DPS the opportunity to get their design up in lights on the High Street. This year Lucy Campbell from P7A was the winner and in addition to receiving the Thelma Band Trophy she also receives a hamper of sweets for her class! Look out for Lucy and her design at the on-line switch on Sunday 29th November.Children in NeedLast Friday members of the Senior Leadership Team had a great time on the gates seeing all the great outfits pupils had decided on for Children in Need – a great turnout and well done everyone for getting involved and raising ?1023.06 for this fantastic charity!P1 Treasure HuntThe P1 team have been working on our outdoor area, creating Literacy, Numeracy and Science sheds, developing zones within the garden for den building, water play, engineering, mud and sand play as well as imaginative role play. Thank you so much for your support with our Autumn Treasure Hunt: we raised an amazing ?864.00!! Repairs on the garden boat are already in progress and should be completed shortly. We are also going to purchase small world resources and science equipment. School Clothing for Winter TermAs the days get colder we recognise the fact that we will need to have our classroom windows open will present some challenges. We would ask that pupils come in more layers and that the final jumper, sweatshirt or fleece is a school colour. Please can you ensure your child has at least 3 or 4 layers on when coming to school when the weather is cold? They can also bring a hat, scarf and gloves for the outdoor activities.COVID-19 Tests / Isolating – We Need Your SupportCan we ask that if your child has been tested, to inform the school office of the negative result before your child returns to school. If your child has been asked to self-isolate, please notify the school office of the date you were given by Test and Protect for them to safely return to school. We are working extremely hard at Dunbar Primary to ensure we follow all the guidelines and this would really help.Playpod Items for LochendThank you to those of you who have already donated to our playpod. We are still looking for crates, tubing, wheeled suitcases, netting, ropes, bins and buckets, old oars and guttering. Imaginative play needs lots of materials so that our children can use them to build with, organise into games or dens. If you can help with any of these items, please call the school office to arrange a drop off (usually dropping off from 3.30pm is best). Finally, the decision was taken on 17th November at the ELC Education Committee to change the dates of the upcoming/New Year holiday. School will now finish on Tuesday 22nd December 2020 and pupils will return on Wednesday 6th January 2021.Helen GillandersHead Teacher ................
