The Evidence, The Experience, The Application”

Friday & Saturday ~ September 7th & 8th, 2012

The University of Utah Integrative Health Conference is a collaboration of educators, health care professionals, counselors, students and community networks. The conference will endeavor to bring better understanding and promotion of optimal health, well-being and healthy lifestyles through comprehensive and integrative approaches. By addressing social, cultural, political issues and beliefs, the conference intends to raise awareness, dispel myths and support evidence based methods which will improve the knowledge, understanding and well-being of students and professionals, as well as the greater community.

This conference will disseminate the most current and up-to-date evidence based research and support for Integrative Health practices to all healthcare professionals – conventional and integrative, educators and students in the healthcare field and anyone interested in learning about an integrative approach to healthcare and treatment.

The National Institute of Health has predicted that all providers of health care will be versed in Integrative Health modalities by the year 2020. The University of Utah recognizes and is responding to the burgeoning science driving interest in this field.

Conference Objectives:

Senior Vice President for Health Sciences

James E. Graves, Ph.D.

University of Utah

Dean of the

College of Health

N. Lee Smith, M.D.

“Why Integrative Health? Possible Areas With Much Potential”

Dr. N. Lee Smith is the Director of Stress Medicine at the Omega Interventional Pain Clinic and Center for MindBody Health in Salt Lake City, Utah. Dr. Smith received his Medical Degree from the University of California, San Francisco. After his residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Utah, he developed a subspecialty in Behavioral Health. This field explores the interface between mental and physical health, and creates effective ways of treating stress related physical illness. His research has found that over half of general medicine patients have such “mind-body” disorders. Much of his research has focused on how mental stress presents itself physically, how it affects medical treatment outcomes, and how to diagnose and treat these disorders in a general medical setting.

John T. Kesler, J.D.

“Why the Time is Ripe for Integrative Health and

What May Be Next?”

15 years ago John Kesler was a founding member of the “Integral Institute” a think tank initiated by philosopher Ken Wilber, and has been active in the Institutes Politics Center and Spiritual Center.

John developed an awareness practice over the past 10 years grounded in integral theory which is recognized widely in the developmental psychology community. John was asked to be vice chair of Developmental Research Institute by Dr. Susanne Cook-Greuter. John is currently one of four individuals under the auspices of DRI engaged in a research project dealing with a new integral approach to scoring sentence stem completions as an indicator of one’s developmental center of gravity of consciousness and “action logic”, including evaluating patterns related to higher stages of human consciousness, which stages have not been validated before.

John, along Jim Overall, M.D. was a co-founder of the Integrative Health Network. He also initiated the Utah Health Care Vision 2010 and was co-chair of the Health and Wellness Working Group.

John has chaired the governance boards of the University of Utah Hospital and Neuropsychiatric Hospital for a decade.

Lynn Gershan, M.D.

“Pediatric Integrative Health: An Invitation to Metamorphosis”

Dr. Lynn Gershan is a graduate of McGill University Faculty of Medicine. She is board-certified in pediatrics and medical acupuncture. She has provided care for infants, children, and adolescents for over 20 years. She is currently in the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Inpatient Medicine  at the University of Utah and the Medical Director of Pediatric Integrative Medicine at Primary Children’s Medical Center. Dr. Gershan combines traditional medicine with complementary methods to provide holistic treatment plans for children. Her specific areas of clinical interest as acu-point therapy, shoni-shin, muscle relaxation and breathing techniques, therapeutic use of essential oils, and self-hypnosis in the pediatric population.  Her research interests include the role of the autonomic nervous system in response to complementary therapies and developing resiliency in children.

Michael Spigarelli, M.D.

“The Future of Integrative Health: Scratching the Surface”

Dr. Spigarelli is a Professor of Pediatrics, Internal Medicine and Pharmacology who joined the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Utah in February 2011 as Division Chief for Adolescent Medicine, Division Chief of Clinical Pharmacology and Director of the Clinical Trials Office. He completed his medical training and Internal Medicine/Pediatric Residency at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and fellowships in Adolescent Medicine and Clinical Pharmacology at Cincinnati Pediatrics and Internal Medicine. He also holds a PhD in Medicinal Chemistry and has had extensive experience with clinical trial design, conduct, and data analysis.

The focus of his personal research involves genomics based projects including understanding the role genetics plays in the interaction between development, environment and disease processes throughout the pediatric age spectrum as well as working to understand body image and eating disorder symptoms. As a clinician who has experience with adolescents he recognizes and appreciates the potential as well as the difficulty associated with the transition between child and adulthood. He has published and presented seminars nationally and internationally on topics from adolescent medicine and gynecology through pharmacology and serves as the chair for the Adolescent Section for the Best Pharmaceuticals for Children’s Act steering committee.

Glenn Richardson, Ph.D.

“The Q-Nexus: How to Harness Intrinsic Drives and Map the Resilient Journey to Optimal Health”

Full Professor, former chair and the current Director of Graduate Studies in the University of Utah, College of Health, Department of Health Promotion and Education, Dr. Richardson has a B.S. Degree in Zoology, an M.S. Degree in Exercise Physiology, and a Ph.D. in Health Science. His key areas of interest are: Integrative Health, Psycho-spiritual Health, Resilience and Health Technology.

Teaching Philosophy: I believe that the integration of combined minds in a classroom can best address and understand life's mental, physical, spiritual, and ecological health challenges rather than relying upon the single mind of the professor.  My role as an instructor is to Socratically foster creativity, expression and experience to build on the foundational "what is" but then forge into the unknown and think about "what could be."
