Breakfast is available every morning for purchase in the kitchen – “grab ‘n go” style!

If your child wants to purchase breakfast, your child should get off the bus at the 2nd Gayhead bus stop (Main Entrance) and go through the small cafeteria to the kitchen. The children will chose items for their “grab ‘n go” bag, then head right to their classroom where they’ll eat and drink what’s in their bags as students settle down to start the day. Wrappers and containers go back in the bag which are then are tossed in the trash.

Gayhead School is all about being a safe, nurturing place for students to feel comfortable and confident.

Being true to our school’s mission statement, we continue to focus on instilling in our students the knowledge, attitudes and skills to become humane problem-solvers, creative thinkers and responsible citizens. We respect the unique qualities of each child, and encourage their individual abilities and dreams. We will foster self-confidence, interdependence and respect for ourselves and for others.

During the month of October teachers will be discussing bully prevention and teaching their students the strategies they need to stand up to or report bullying. They will be discussing our 6 problem solving strategies.

* Tell Them to Please Stop,

* Work it Out,

* Ignore It,

* Take a Break,

* Share and Take Turns,

* Say I'm Sorry.

Since we expect students to proactively use these strategies, we want families to be aware of them as well. They are currently available on our school website under character education (problem solving strategies). Practicing how to use these strategies at home is a great way to ensure your child(ren) will be able to handle conflict when it arises. Mr. Olavarria and Mr. Seipp include the Gayhead Anti Bullying Pledge in our school’s morning announcements every day.

Gayhead School Anti-Bullying Pledge

I make a COMMITTMENT to stand up against bullying

I will treat others with RESPECT and KINDNESS

I will show EMPATHY towards others

I will have the COMPASSION to not be a bully

and the COURAGE to not be a bystander

It is my RESPONSIBILITY to help others being bullied

and to report bullying

The end of bullying begins with ME

On Friday, September 21, Mrs. Dodge, one of our

kindergarten teachers, helped to organize the

whole school in a program celebrating the United

States Constitution. It was a great success!

Our fifth graders recited the poem, "I Am

America." They were incredible! Seniors from

John Jay High School came to Gayhead and performed "The Preamble" (Dan, Callie, and Lindsay ) and were such great role models for the younger students.

We extend sincere thanks to all who helped with this program:

From our Music Department, Mrs. Banda and Mrs. Spinella did a splendid job with the performances, the music, and the sound system -- everything was just perfect!! Mrs. O’Gorman, our librarian, recorded the performance and put it on the school’s common drive for the students to enjoy watching afterwards.

Ms. Griffith's class made the perfect sign to sum up the whole event! Thanks to our PTA members, who were helpful and supportive in assisting students, while they took their assigned positions.

Our custodians, Mr. Cohen and Mr. Thom assisted with roof top logistics.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As we move forward into the school year, I’m happy to tell you that we are in full swing here at Gayhead. Parents As Partners Nights were very successful with almost 100% of our parents attending. I hope you enjoyed the evening as much as our teachers, Mr. Seipp and I did. Our Twenty-five Book Campaign is well on its way. Progress charts are beginning to appear on the walls outside the classroom doors. Each group is making a concerted effort to get all students involved.

Gayhead School is a busy place in the weeks ahead. Columbus Day is October 8th, therefore there is no school. There is a Board of Education meeting on October 9th and 22nd at 7:30 for public session at Wappingers Junior High School. Our PTA Book Fair is coming up soon – October 10, 11 and 12, culminating with the Ice Cream Social Friday evening from 6:00-8:00. Both events are always exciting and fun for everyone. The Gayhead PTA meets at 7:00 p.m. on October 16th. The Gayhead SLT meets on October 23 in the primary library at 8:15 a.m. We look forward to school pictures, at the end of the month, on October 24 and 25. Our Gayhead PTA volunteers do a wonderful job presenting and organizing all our events.

The following month of November is very busy as well. School will be closed on November 6 for Columbus Day and on November 12 for Veteran’s Day.

There will be early dismissal at 11:30 for all grades on November 15, 16 and 19 for report card conferences. There is a PTA meeting on Tuesday November 20 at 7:00 p.m. School will be closed for the Thanksgiving recess is November 21, 22, and 23

There is a Board of Education meeting on November 5th and 19th and the Gayhead School Leadership Team meets at 8:15 a.m. on November 27 in the primary library.

If you have not scheduled a conference with your child’s teacher, please call him/her at 227-1756. It is very important to each child’s progress that parents and teachers meet to discuss the first quarter of the school year. If you have any questions concerning your child’s progress, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher. Please do not wait until the November report card conferences if you have concerns about your child.

The Gayhead Kitchen offers breakfast every morning. As soon as they get off the bus, students who wish to purchase breakfast can go to the small cafeteria kitchen where a selection of breakfast items is available. The cost is $1.15. Please see the flyer in this newsletter for further information.

Please visit our website to keep up with what’s going on in our school and for important dates and announcements – go to , click on SCHOOLS on the top bar, look on the left side of the page for Gayhead Elementary School and click there. When our page comes up on your computer, you can choose from several different links to find information. On the left side about mid-way down you’ll find a link to our calendar to learn about events here at school. You’ll also find a link to our newsletter which we hope you will check out each month.

If you wish to be notified in the event of an unexpected emergency early dismissal, please send a note to the principal’s office with your child’s name, teacher’s name, the name of the person who should be notified and the telephone number where that person can be reached.

Sincerely,

José J. Olavarría

This October 1st we welcomed Eric Seipp as our Assistant Principal. Mr. Seipp has hit the ground running. He visits the classrooms often and is getting to know the students quickly. Mr. Seipp is a pleasure to work with. We are very lucky to have someone with his knowledge, experience and skills, as well as his kindness, join us.
