12192045720FOR GOD AND COUNTRYPARK FOREST AMERICAN LEGION POST 11981631 Western Avenue, Chicago Heights, IL 60411-3149SCHOLARSHIP RULES(6th Amendment as of 12-31-2018)American Legion Post 1198 will grant up to three (3) $500.00 scholarships annually to three (3) graduating high school students.Applicants must have been accepted as entering, first year, full-time students at an accredited university, college, technical, trade, or professional school.APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS: The Applicant must be a direct descendent of an honorably discharged veteran; OR the child of a spouse from a previous marriage to an honorably discharged veteran; OR the legally adopted child of an honorably discharged veteran, regardless of birth parentage. The veteran ancestor may be a great-grandparent, grandparent, parent, adoptive parent, or in loco parentis parent. The veteran ancestor must have served and been honorably discharged from one of the United States military services that is recognized by the American Legion: Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard, or Merchant Marine. Proof of honorable discharge will be required and must be included with the application package.The Applicant must be a graduating senior in high school with a C+ average (2.5 on a 4.0 scale) or higher.The Applicant must have been accepted and enrolled as a first year student at an accredited institution of higher learning as delineated in the opening paragraph. The institution of higher learning must offer a full two (2) to four (4) year curriculum.The Applicant must not have reached her/his 24th birthday at the time of enrollment in the institution of higher learning.Scholarship awards will be based on the following criteria:Academic grade point average (GPA)Ancestor’s service membership as delineated in Paragraph 1;Ancestor’s involvement in veterans’ service organization(s);Applicant’s demonstrated leadership abilities while in high school; Applicant’s demonstrated participation in community/civic activities;Applicant’s demonstrated moral characterApplicant’s demonstrated financial need and degree of self-support. The Applicant will be a graduating senior drawn primarily, but not exclusively, from the following schools:Rich Township High Schools: Rich East, South, and CentralBloom High School, Chicago Heights, ILCrete-Monee High School, Crete, ILMarian Catholic High School, Chicago Heights, ILIllinois Lutheran High School, Crete, IL Preference will be given to applicants based on their veteran antecedent’s participation in veterans’ organizations, as follows:American Legion Post 1198 membershipMembership in any American Legion PostMembership in another Veteran Service Organization (i.e. AMVETS, VFW, Fleet Reserve Association)Military service in the U.S. Armed Forces, honorably discharged, but whose service does not qualify them for membership in a Veterans’ organization.
