Year 2 Activities Week Beginning 18.5.20Literacy (please remember to use a ruler to rule lines for all writing activities and ask your child to write the long date)Reading Challenge: Try a reading challenge every day and give a treat /prize when your child finishes all 5 challenges. Have fun reading!# Read a book in a robot voice.# Read a book to a family member or friend over the phone or facetime them.# Read a book that someone else picks for you.# Make a picnic and then read outside wearing sunglasses.# Read a book about a caterpillar or a butterfly.Read / watch the story on You Tube of ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ by Eric Carle’. Either Google ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar Read Aloud Picture Book / Brightly Storytime’ or ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar Animated Film’. Talk about this story with your child and then ask questions to develop comprehension and talking and listening skills. For eg: What did the very hungry caterpillar eat on Monday? On which night did the very hungry caterpillar have a sore tummy? Can you name the different fruits that the very hungry caterpillar ate during the week? Tigers - Use the ‘Fix the sentences activity cards’. Have a look at the first sentence that Mr. Whoops has written and see if your child can try and spot all the spelling mistakes that he made. Discuss which words are spelt incorrectly and see if your child can write down the correct spellings on a piece of paper. Choose another sentence and repeat. Complete work in your Literacy book rather than on the sheet. Please write the long date at the top with the title ‘The very hungry caterpillar’ on the next line. Underneath this copy the WALT fix sentences. Choose 3 of the activity cards and write the sentences with the correct spellings. Draw a picture for each of your sentences. Can you now read these sentences to a family member?Monkeys – Use the ‘Sentence Game’ worksheet Page 2 and see if your child can work out which word is missing as he/she reads each sentence. Next ask your child to write down the missing word on a piece of paper and check to see if they have spelt the word correctly. Now complete the worksheet as a cut and stick using the words on Page 3. If you don’t have a printer copy the sentences into your Literacy book. Can you read your sentences to a family member?Bears – Use the ‘Sentence Game’ worksheet Page 1 and see if your child can work out which word is missing as he/she reads each sentence. Now that you are in the mood for stories you may wish to read along to a popular story on .uk or Tigers & Monkeys– Revise phonic diagraphs ‘sh, th, ch & wh’. Introduce new one ‘ph’. Make use of online song and google‘Diagraph / Phonics song for children Phonemic Awareness Jack Hartmann’. Can you now make a list of five words for each diagraph in your Literacy books? Choose one word from each of the diagraphs and write an interesting sentence for each one. Use a coloured pen to underline the diagraph you used.Bears – Phonics - Focus on the 8 sounds in the word ‘caterpillar’[c, a, t, e, r, p, i & l] Hold up on a piece of paper a sound at a time. Can your child tell you the sound and something beginning with it? Next draw 8 circles in their Literacy book and this time you say the sound, but don’t show them the sound card. Can your child write the sound inside the circle? Repeat with the other sounds. Complete the cut & stick phonic worksheets entitled ‘Beginning Sound Match’ and ‘Beginning Sounds’.Online keyword activity – Tigers ‘Jack Hartmann Sight Words List 11-15’ [You could do one list per day] Monkeys ‘Jack Hartmann Sight Words List 5-6 [Cover these two lists during the week] Bears ‘Jack Hartmann Sight Words List 3’ & ‘Sight Word Rap 1- Sight Words High Frequency You Tube’. Continue to revise keywords by making use of your word box, word walls, keyword sheets and keyword games found in Y2 Resources folder. Continue working on ‘My Rainbow Journal’ found in Literacy folder and complete the page entitled ‘A week in the life of me’.Practise letter formation in your book – Capital letters V, W, K – write one line of each letter. Then write a sentence underneath Eg: Ken and Victoria flew to Washington. Draw / colour a picture to illustrate your sentence.Spellings – learn spellings for week commencing 18.5.20. Why not make use of ‘Spelling Practice Sheets’ in folder [own choice] to write out your spelling words. Complete test at the back of your book.Numeracy [Explore marks.co.uk for counting, ordering, sequencing, money, shapes and pattern]Tigers & Monkeys – Sing along 2/3 times to ‘Count by 1s to 50 Forwards & backwards Counting song for kids Count to 50 Jack Hartmann – YouTube.’ Now oral count to 50 on your own. Practise your rhythm counting forwards and backwards to 50 [clap, slap, click, click] Can you start at 25 and jog on the spot until you count to 50? Now Mum say a number between 1-50 and your child starts counting from there. Use your 1-100 square if you need to. Mum call out a number from 1-50 and see if your child can write it down forming it correctly into their Numeracy book. Put your number cards 1-50 into a bag and mix them up. Ask your child to pull out 5 numbers and this time put them in order from largest to smallest. In your Numeracy book ask your child to draw round 6 circles to make a caterpillar. The first circle is the head of the caterpillar so ask your child to write the 5 numbers that they have just ordered onto the rest of the circles. Repeat until all the numbers have been used. Add eyes, mouth and legs to the caterpillars and write on top of the numbers with different coloured pens to make the caterpillars more colourful. Can you now put your number cards in order from 50-1? Log on to Top Marks Maths Games. Play Helicopter Rescue 1-50. Try 1-100.Bears – Sing along 2/3 times to ‘Song for kids / Counting 1s to 20 Jack Hartmann – You Tube.’ Oral count to 20 on your own. Follow the instructions on the ‘Ice Creams Ordinal Numbers Worksheet’ to colour in the ice creams. Follow this up by counting out 10 different toy animals or toys and placing them in a long row. Mum ask questions like which animal is first, fourth, ninth etc in the line? Get your child to say the answer in a full sentence ‘The cow is first in the line.’ Also make use of the language behind, in front of, between, last. For eg: Which animal is behind the cat or who is in front of the dog? Write on pieces of paper or card the ordinal number words from first to tenth and now place these beside the correct toy. Can you go along the line saying the ordinal numbers? Ask Mum to take a photograph of you beside your row of labelled toys and email it to your Year 2 teacher to show us how clever you are at writing your ordinal number words. Do not complete any other sheets as we will be returning to this booklet next week!! Can you solve these calculations in your head? Only use a number line if you really need to. Time yourself to see how long it takes you to work out these calculations. Use a calculator if you have one to check your answers. Colour in the picture when finished. Bears – Addition to 12. Mum can you call out some addition calculations for your child to quickly work out the answers using their fingers, a number line or their head if they can for eg: 1+3= 2+5= 5+5= Play with your sibling or another family member ‘The very hungry caterpillar roll game – Roll 2 die and add.’ Again make use of your fingers, a number line or your head to work out the answers. Use a calculator if you have one to check your answers. Tigers & Monkeys –Introduce oral subtraction word problems to your child eg There are 8 birds sitting on a tree. 3 birds fly away. How many birds are left on the tree? Get your child to work it out by drawing the 8 birds and then crossing out the 3 birds that flew away. Can they say the number sentence and then write it down? Ask the question again how many birds are left on the tree? Get your child to respond by saying the answer - 5 birds. Discuss another problem worded in a different way. Tom has 9 marbles. He has 2 more than Ethan. How many marbles does Ethan have? Make up some more problems for your child to solve. Tigers complete subtraction problems to 15 worksheet and Monkeys complete subtraction problems to 10 worksheet. Bears – Make sets of objects eg Lego bricks up to 10. Ask mum/dad to tell you how many to take away each time. Can you now tell them the number sentences and write them out in your Numeracy book. Complete Butterfly subtraction sheet. Make use of the butterfly pictures, Lego, fingers or number line to help you solve these problems. Good luck! Pattern Work – Make use of your fruit bowl, your Lego or toys to make a 2/3/4 pattern. Remember your pattern could be a colour one, shape, fruit, toy, etc If you are not so sure about patterns view on line some songs – ‘Patterns & Colours Children’s songs’. Can you make a 2 /3 /4 pattern? Try making a pattern with numbers, letters or even natural materials! Could you set out all the different patterns you make on your kitchen table and take a photo to send to your Year 2 teacher. Finish by completing ‘The very hungry caterpillar pattern sheet’. This concentrates on colour patterns!Other activitiesWAU Can you remember all the different foods that the very hungry caterpillar ate during the week? Do you know if they are healthy or unhealthy? Discuss first before viewing online this song– ‘Nursery Rhymes Food Song for children Food keeps you healthy’. Does this help you? Print off ‘The very hungry caterpillar sorting game’ and cut out the pictures of the food. Then use the sheets to sort the foods into the correct group. Next discuss how these foods can also be sorted using a Venn diagram. [2 circles overlapping] Draw 2 overlapping circles into your Numeracy book. On the left hand side label it ‘Healthy’ on the right hand side ‘Unhealthy’ and then in the middle write ‘Both’. Stick the pictures of the different foods onto the Venn diagram or draw your own pictures if you prefer. As you know fruit is one of the healthy options to eat so why not finish with your own healthy homemade fruit smoothie. Yum! Yum! See ‘Fruit Smoothies recipe cards.’ PE with Joe Wicks on You Tube. Remember he goes live at 9.00 am every morning for an energetic work out! Or choose ‘Core NI’ to do a family workout at 11am. Try a more gentle exercise online - ‘Kids Yoga with Bari Koral – Fly like a butterfly’ or to get the heart pumping have a go at Joe Wicks 8 minute workout No 1. Make use of the exercise cards to show you what exercises to complete.Make use of BBC Bitesize website for daily lessons for reinforcement or extra activities if needed. [bbc.co.uk/bitesize] On a Friday there is a quick Maths challenge so watch out for that.Music – Take time to listen to a variety of music. Think about how it makes you feel, if you like it and why. Make your own musical instrument from an empty bottle and fill this up with rice and or dried peas. Why not make two when you are at it. You have now made yourself a set of Maracas. Decorate the bottles if you wish and then ‘Shake, rattle and roll’!! For other activities go to Activity village.co.ukHelp prepare dinner or an easy dessert. You could also make your own stick puppets to retell the story of the very hungry caterpillar.
