September 2011 Luncheon News

Pat Wiese

Forty-seven retirees and guests enjoyed a tasty lunch of either pork loin or fish.  Bob Meinhardt, Executive Vice-President of ACS, led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and Bob Eddy led us in the invocation.  After the lunch, Bob Meinhardt recognized our two first-time attendees – Kent Kenniston and Gary Seger.  Hope they will be able to join us at future luncheons.

The Gateway Harmonica Club entertained us.  They are 94 members strong and not all are local.  This organization donates the money they receive from their gigs to five different charities.  In the past ten years, they have donated $50,000 to these charities.  Looking around the room, you could see feet moving to the music.  After the performance, several guests said they would have liked to have gotten up and danced, especially the polkas.  Jim Melchers did an excellent job playing Amazing Grace.

Jim Boyd gave an impromptu update of the changes to the ACS constitution as we move to the NGAA-West organization.  Nothing is final yet.

The winners of the 50/50 were Larry Knopfel, Jim Hilterbrand, Pat Wiese, Jim Stanton, Kent Kenniston, Mark Hagler (2), JoAnne Moran (2), and Pat Reed.

President’s Report

2011 in Review

We began the journey with our partners in the East to create the NGA Alumni Association.  We are waiting for NGA's certification signature on the new constitution.  ACS has continued to move forward while waiting for this event.  Bob Pankey has created a NGAA-West web site () and we have begun to populate it with our chapter's information.  Bob Eddy has chaired a committee to re-write our bi-laws and they will soon be complete and posted on the new web site.

We have had an eventful year. The golf league had an outstanding season in spite of the strange weather. Two of our members scored holes in one and we celebrated one at our final outing/banquet. Thanks again to Larry and his committee for all their hard work.

I hope you all will have a Great Christmas and New Year.

Alumni Association Status

The National Geospatial Intelligence Alumni Association (NGAA) approval by the Director of NGA has been a slow process. Since we were thought to be a private organization operating in the NGA space at Fort Belvoir, the Army regulations were applied. This caused problems with insurance and reimbursement for cost, etc. Once the lawyers from NGA and the Army discussed that we actually reside outside of the NGA footprint, then the NGA Handbook for Private Organizations did not apply. As of 15 November, we are still awaiting NGA to sign off on the new organization, estimated to be 1 Dec 2011. We have been busy over the summer, establishing a new charter and by-laws. Once approved, our new name will be NGAA West. I hope to have further information at the December meeting.

ACS Board Policy

Refund of Reservation Payment

In response to several inquires on when one can obtain a refund for luncheon reservations, the following is the ACS Board policy for sending out a refund.

“All luncheon reservation requests are recorded as they are received. On the Thursday prior to a luncheon the number of meals by type is provided to the Viking.  On the Monday prior to the luncheon the Viking is again called with the final number of each selection and with the total number of attendees.  ACS is then committed to these numbers and must pay for the number of meals reserved.   Refunds or luncheon vouchers are ONLY issued to those individuals who call in a cancellation at (636) 296-8831 prior to the Monday preceding the luncheon. Therefore, there will be no refund or luncheon voucher issued for an individual who does not attend the luncheon without that prior notification.”

As an example,

for the December 14, 2011 luncheon call

(636) 296-8831

before December 12, 2011 if you must cancel.

Arsenal Mixed League Sunset Lanes

By Pat Wiese

The Arsenal Mixed-League started its 2011-2012 season for the first time at SUNSET LANES on Tuesday September 6, 2011 at 4 PM.  We now have a full eight- team league with 35 bowlers. The newest team, The Ghosts, after the first position night, has a six-point lead over The Fab Four. Everyone does appreciate the consistent lane conditions and is adjusting their mechanics to find the best shot. Ron Lindy leads the men with a 194 average. Debra Neustadt leads the women with a 174 average.

If you are interested in bowling in this league for the rest of the 2011-2012 season at Sunset Lanes, contact Pat Wiese, 314-385-7845.

Thursday Invitational League

Sunset Lanes

By Doug Nolte

The NGA Men’s Thursday Invitational Bowling League started its third season at Sunset Lanes on September 8, 2011 just ENE of the Watson Rd. and Laclede Station Rd. intersection. We’re there every Thursday with bowling beginning at 4:00 PM.

After nine weeks of bowling the standings in this fine league of ACIC/DMAAC/NIMA/NGA workers and ex-workers has finally settled down and most of the cream has risen to the top. Some of the cream that was expected to be there is a little slower than the rest but we can feel assured that when all the pins have toppled some of the grizzled veterans will have made sure their team has pulled itself up by their bootstraps and finishes where expected. Nine weeks into the season an appropriately named squad, The Toads, is leading the pack, followed closely by the Bushcrud Dogs and the Pacesetters, last year’s champions and home to the venerable Don Granberry. As we plow closer to the midway point in the season, perhaps 5 or 6 weeks in the future, the true race will reveal itself and we’ll declare a first half winner.

Thus far, no team is dominating so these few remaining weeks will prove interesting.

As always, if you care to see some old faces, and even some unfamiliar ones, please stop by Sunset Lanes on Watson road one of these Thursdays about 4:30 or so in the afternoon. This is good clean fun and the weather is very decent in the building.

We hope to see you there. The league President, Harry Lemakis (314- 631-1619), and the Secretary, Wayne Powers encourage anyone still working at NGA, or of NGA legacy to find out more about joining in the fun. You can contact Wayne at Wayne.D.Powers@nga.mil

ACS Golf News 2011

Submitted by Doug Nolte

11 August 2011: Spencer T. Olin Golf Course. This Arnold Palmer designed golf course in Alton, Illinois is usually one of the highlights of our season. Always a well-manicured course this year was no exception except one; the greens were a bit suspect, suffering from the maladies of the hot summer, as most courses did, the greens were showing some of their sand underbellies and many bare spots were evident. This didn’t deter 105 of us as we ventured out onto the course at our usual 0800 start time amidst a welcome break in the humidity. It was a pleasure playing in rather sane climatic conditions versus what we’d been used to in the previous weeks. In the results column we had Darryl Rue comfortably ensconced on the winning team which turned in a very nice -9 for the day. Many ACSers were in the snarl for third place at -7. Luminaries such as John Boyd, Ed de la Peña, Ron Muse, Jeff Delaplain, Randy Pratt, Joe McDaniels, Larry Willman, Bob Edwards, Bill Clark and Dave Gillett were amongst the personnel on those teams finishing in third place. Bob Edwards was one of the closest to the pin winners with a dandy shot on #5. Ed de la Peña’s team and John Boyd’s team were the only teams recording skins for the day with eagles on #1 and #9.

18 August 2011: Pevely Farms Golf Course. This jewel, nestled among some hills and valleys just off Interstate 44, is one of the more challenging courses we play during the season. Every hole presents obstacles different from the last and in some cases; we’re not allowed to drive our golf carts on the fairways making the challenge even more frustrating. Of course, these holes are the ones that have the most topographic variance so we have to act like mountain goats to get to our errant shots. Not helping in the matter was the climate. Summer came back with a vengeance and we perspired through the round as if in a sauna. In first place with a dandy -11 score was the Ron Muse team that included Dan Snowden. Remarkably, one member of this team last played on April 14th and had a heart transplant on the 19th of that month. And here he was playing golf in August – amazing. In third place with a -9 was a team that included Joe Goines and Earl Phillips.

ACS Golf News 2011

Closest to the pin awards were captured by two ACS folks, Ron Muse and John Boyd. The only skin of the day was awarded to the Dennis O’Conner team.

25 August 2011: The Falls Golf Course. This course is nestled in several subdivisions in the O’Fallon, Missouri area just across the road from the Fort Zumwalt High School. Some folks a leery about playing here because of the proximity of the houses to the course and the possibility of making contact with those houses when striking the ball. Fortunately, that never, ever happens. On this day, 104 golfers began the quest at a nice 0730 start time. We like to start early during the summer months to avoid the hot weather as much as possible. The course was in good shape and some teams took advantage of the great conditions. For the day, we split the teams into flights, A, B, C, and the results were good, and interesting. The better players hit from tees further back than the other players and thus the scores are more balanced. In the A flight a team that included Randy Pratt managed a lofty -10 score. In second place at -8 were teams that included Ed de la Peña, Ron Muse, and Dennis O’Connor. Bob Day was on a team that finished 3rd with a -7 score. In the B flight the winners shot a great -9 and that team included Bob Edwards, Dennis Shannon, and Bob Meinhardt. Dan Snowden was on a team that finished in 3rd place with a -7. In the C flight Ernie South, Larry Knopfel, and George Keil were on teams that posted a -6 score for first place. Earl Phillips was on a team that finished third with a -5. Harold Howard and Randy Pratt were among the closest to the pin awardees. There were no skins for the day because we normally don’t award skins on the days we flight the teams.

1 September 2011: The Golf Club of Wentzville. This is another subdivision golf course with some fairways lined with nice homes that wouldn’t look too nice with golf balls embedded in the siding. The course is south and a bit west of Wentzville. This day was one of those late summer foolers with temperatures in the mid-90’s putting a humid damper on the efforts for the day. But the course was in very fine shape and we proceeded to “tear” it up. Some very low scores were shot for the day, and even one player had a hole-in-one to make his day.

Two teams, one of which included Harold Howard who is no stranger to holes-in-one having made two in the ACS group, shot the lowest score for the day, a -12. What made it special for Harold was the fact that the hole-in-one for the day came from his team. In second place was a team that included Ernie South and Larry Knopfel. Third place at -9 was held by three teams that included John Boyd, Larry Willman, Bob Meinhardt, Joe Jarvis and Mark Hagler. Significantly enough, all teams finished under par for the day. We don’t do that very often. Darryl Rue and Ernie South were among the closest-to-the-pin awardees.

8 September 2011: Birch Creek Golf Course. This course is just off Interstate 44 and just after the US 50 exit to Union. We last played this course 5 years ago but had not been back because of a disagreement with the management on marking our golf carts. We like to have names on the carts because every week we play with different players. It just avoids confusion if the carts are marked beforehand. This time they did it and everything went smoothly. In fact the owner, who didn’t grant our wishes before, was very impressed with our organization as well he should be because we sign in all our players, collect all the green fees and pay him in one lump sum basically eliminating any work on his part. The course was in very good shape with the exception of the greens, but this is normal for this area for this time of year. Rest assured, they are not alone. Alone in first place with a -10 was a team that included none other than Libby Lanning. In second place at a -9 were two teams that included Joe Jarvis, Livingston Sykes, and Jack Panula. In third place were three teams that had among others Harold Howard, Bob Touzinsky, Larry Willman, and Mark Hagler. Harold Howard, looking for another hole-in-one, was one of the closest-to-the-pin awardees. There were no skins for the day. No team had the single lowest score on a hole. This doesn’t happen very often.

15 September 2011: Annbriar Golf Course. This is truly one of the premier public golf courses in the St. Louis area. Located west of Waterloo, Illinois, it’s not exactly a hop skip and a jump for most golfers in the ACS but it’s worth the trip for any avid golfer. The fairways are wonderfully groomed and as they should be because we were not allowed to drive on them since it had rained at least one or two days prior. Courses are very careful about allowing golf carts on their pristine fairways after a rain. Annbriar is no exception although the fairways seemed dry enough to support the fat tires of the golf carts (but evidently not necessarily the fat players that ride in them). Somehow, for as flat as the rest of Illinois is, the designers of the course managed to find some hills close to the Mississippi bluffs. These hills made playing a bit tedious because we had to walk from the cart downhill to the greens, but then back uphill to the cart. That gets old quick. I know, I know, we should be walking the whole course for our health, but you have to realize that the average age for this group is well in excess of 70 years so hill climbing is a thing of the past for many of the troops. First place at a -8 was a team that included Bob Edwards, Larry Knopfel, and Dennis Dummeyer. Three teams tied at -7 for second place and those clubs included Jack Eckhard, Bob Haddad, Ed de la Peña, Dennis O’Connor, and Earl Phillips. Five teams tied for third place at a -6 and those teams included Ron Muse, Harold Howard, and Pat Reed. No ACS members figured in either the closest-to-the-pin contests or the skins contest.

22 September 2011: Gateway National Golf Course. What used to be a wonderful course because of its great fairways of bent grass was a definite disappointment on this lousy weather day. Eighty-seven players attempted to compete on this course but the fairways had become sparse and the tee boxes almost non-existent with respect to grass coverage. In many cases, the tee boxes were temporary and we were hitting off what remained of the fairway. Hopefully, by next season the course will be back to playable condition but it will have to improve significantly for this group to spend its time there. Ron Muse was on the winning team that posted a very nice -9. Two teams that included Jack Eckhard, Dan Snowden, and Pat Reed finished in second with a -8.

ACS Golf News 2011

Two teams finished in third place with a -6 and they had John Boyd, Earl Phillips, and Dennis O’Connor amongst them. Joe Mullins captured 2 closest-to-the-pin awards and John Boyd had one. The Ron Muse team had an eagle on #13 for one of the skins.

29 September 2011: Far Oaks Golf Course. This course is close to the other O’Fallon in the area, the Illinois O’Fallon. It’s not too far north of Interstate 64 and the intersection of Illinois 159. And it’s another of those subdivision golf courses. It is a very scenic course with many, many sand traps that come into play a lot more often than some teams care to imagine. This day weather-wise was wonderful and it matched the condition of the course. We had no complaints about any facet of the facilities. For sure, it is one of the nicer courses that we play during our 26-week season. In first place, and with the lowest score ever posted by the ACS group (according to one of the amateur historians amongst us), was a team that included Ron Muse, George Keil and Doug Nolte. We carded a -13 and this shall remain as the target for future outings. Eclipsing that will be done I’m sure, but it was a lot of fun while it lasted. In third place at -9 were two teams that included Bob Meinhardt and Dan Snowden.

No ACS member was closest-to-the-pin on any of the par 3’s and Doug Torrie’s team took home one of the skins with an eagle on the #18.

6 October 2011: The Missouri Bluffs Golf Course. This is the last outing of the season and as usual, the most heavily attended in part because there is a meal after the event, reimbursed by all the prize fund contributions during the season. The Missouri Bluffs is one of the best courses we play all year and is normally in very good shape, but because of the very hot, humid summer a lot of the greens were affected the same as we encountered on other courses leading up to this final outing.

For this outing we once again split up the teams into flights, although for purposes of camaraderie we allowed the teams to be mixed in case an A player really wanted a B player on his team. Any team with a mix of flights had to compete with other teams at the highest rank on that team. In the A flight category four teams finished tied for second with a -5 score. Those teams included Randy Pratt, Don Giarraffa, John Boyd and Joe Jarvis. The Joe Goines and Ed de la Peña teams finished in third with a -4. In the B flight, two teams tied for second place at -4 and among those teams was none other than Tom Murphy. Two teams tied for third at -3 and Bob Meinhardt and Jack Panula were on one of those teams. In the C flight Ernie South was on the winning team helping them shoot a -6. Tom Murphy was among the closest-to-the-pin awardees. And once again, one of the closest-to-the-pins featured a hole-in-one.

All NGA retirees are welcomed to join the golf group that plays every Thursday. Looking forward to seeing you in 2012. Contact any committee member if you wish to join and become a member of this fun group. The golf committee now consists of Ed de la Pena, Jack Eckhard, Bob Eddy, Larry Knopfel, Ron Muse, Doug Nolte, Randy Pratt, and Dennis Terhaar.

YOU’LL MEET OLD FRIENDS AND CO-WORKERS WHO SHARE COMMON INTERESTS

We meet the fourth Wednesday of the month in March, June, September, and December. The December date will vary due to Christmas. At the meetings, we have a social hour, lunch, business meeting, entertainment, and informative programs. We meet at a location decided upon by the Executive Board and we try to stay at one location for all luncheons. Our newsletter, published and distributed to members the month prior to the luncheons, include all the details of the upcoming luncheon related to place, menu, entertainment and cost for each person attending. Our newsletter also includes information about member activities and association business.

If you are a golfer, many members play a four-person scramble every other Thursday, beginning in mid-April and ending in mid- October. However, the true fun of belonging to the Aerospace Charting Seniors is that it provides the opportunity to renew acquaintances and talk about the good old days.
